Anyone watching? Really interesting.

Jai was recalled to custody the same day he was let out!

purpleme12 · 28/06/2023 23:59

He said he's never gone 9 days without alcohol since he was 14 till now

purpleme12 · 29/06/2023 00:23

So both of them were recalled 😔

Although it sounds like things went very wrong for Ben after all that 😔

purpleme12 · 29/06/2023 00:24

Did anyone else watch this episode on Monday?

maranella · 29/06/2023 07:56

Yes, I did @purpleme12

I don't envy the parole board having to make these decisions. I wouldn't let any of them out. They're all a liability and highly likely to re-offend and have a negative impact on the public - that's why they ended up in prison in the first place. I appreciate that a) they need to have hope of release and b) unless someone has an indeterminate sentence then they will get out again at some point, but these are broken people and most of them will always be a risk to the public IMO.

sweatervest · 29/06/2023 07:59

"so it's killing a bird with two stones" said the one who got recalled the same day as he got released.

i want a new series sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon tbh as it's the best programme and i'm literally agog all the way through

maranella · 29/06/2023 09:25

Jai wasn't exactly a bright spark😂I really liked the male parole officer who interviewed him - I was laughing out loud at some of the questions and comments he made. How he keeps a straight face I'll never know. I guess it's really not that funny that these drug-addicted, drug-dealing morons are about to rejoin society.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2023 13:19

It's such an interesting programme. I am not surprised they both got recalled. They are so enmeshed in criminality/ prison etc that they have little hope of getting away from it.

I may be wrong, but has there only been one happy ending the whole series - the lovely girl with the mental health issues (who probably needed kinder treatment than prison)?

The rest seem to be on a constant cycle of reoffending and being recalled. It must be so demoralising for everyone involved in the system.

GingerRuby · 29/06/2023 14:15

I know it was hope over reality but I was so hoping that Ben could stay clean and turn things around, was so sad to see the update and that he didn't even attend the doctors to see what his prognosis was.
Absolutely fascinating programme.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2023 15:06

@queenofthewild yes. I hope she's doing well. Prison was absolutely not the right place for her.

Only just found this thread! Why was there such a big gap between the previous programme and this one?

I watch these convicts with dismay, they're so likely to reoffend. Some don't care but want to bullshit their way through the parole process, say the right things yet they're recalled in no time. Can't say as many of them make me sympathetic although I know it's a mess of poor upbringing, bad influences, crap choices and no support when they're released.

New series started last night - anyone watch?

Seaweed42 · 26/09/2024 10:21

Yes, very interesting.
But they don't give the snippet of follow-up information 'what happened next' at the end of the episode.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/09/2024 17:46

I was going to start a thread, then found I'd already started this one. I wondered about the follow up. I thought I'd just missed it. I think they made the right decision with the man who broke his curfew the first night. He seemed to have little insight or ability to control his anger. Not sure about the one who murdered his friend. It was so brutal o don't think he should ever be released.

No, but I will now I know it's started again.

It's fascinating.

The awful scam bloke was just...... awful. I bet he's gone back to scamming random women.

Hellocatshome · 26/09/2024 21:46

Maxwell who broke his curfew has not accepted responsibility for anything he has done. Yes he may have reasons for his behaviour and things that happened in his past should never have happened but he is still responsible for his actions in the here and now.

John was very honest and he probably was ok to go to an Open Prison but I hope they dont rush into giving him some of the freedoms that come with it. I think he needs baby steps.

I thought the curfew bloke was clear cut and was surprised when the parole lady said she'd struggled with the decision. At least she was aware of her bias for him but he never at any point accepted responsibility for anything he'd done. Even when he broke his curfew it was the fault of the person who buzzed him out despite parole lady saying he'd been clearly told on arrival that he could not leave the premises that evening!

Why is a panel
Used in some cases, and only one person in others?

I was wondering the same thing.

I assumed seriousness of offence and length of sentence. One of the panel members for the murder was a psychologist so I assumed they needed more in depth analysis. Maxwell's sentence was only 5 years and he was being released in 18 months no matter what. The murderer would remain in prison unless the parole board agreed to his release.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/09/2024 16:39

@ that would make sense!

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 28/09/2024 17:40

We agreed with both decisions this week , the murderer was if anything a bit too honest and insightful for his own good . Of the two the Maxwell was the more concerning one as nothing is ever his fault ,frankly it’s immaterial whether he gets parole or not as he will no doubt be back in .

Sammysees · 28/09/2024 19:01

Just discovered this and finished season 1. Why do these prisoners have to go to a hostel and not home? Maybe I am being naive but surely they would all be better off with their mums/family than in a hostel surrounded by other unsavoury characters/alcohol/drugs?
It is so worrying that the majority of these people will reoffend and have no intention of keeping on the right side of the law.
I also found it interesting that only 25% of parole hearings lead to release. Although going by the recall rates that is still probably 20% too high.
Very eye opening programme.
