Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

I enjoyed e2

Not sure when he got out of the car though and not a single person saw him get out of the car before it rolled

And didn't see him standing on the cliff

Surely wife would have known he got out of the car

Really hope Martha doesn't have an affair with Archie

Tho he is rather cute

The chap who played the cheated husband was in the repeat episode of Death in Paradise shown straight after.

Maybe that’s why they chose to show that episode of DIP - I did wonder why they were showing just a random one from the middle of an old series.

I enjoyed last night’s episode and agree the basic plot of the family suddenly vanishing is similar to a Tim Weaver book.

Riverlee · 04/03/2023 08:18

Hope Martha doesn’t have an affair also. Not the ethos of a cosy drama or DiP.

Surely Martha would have told him she was engaged before. I thought Hump’s reaction was a natural reaction. You would be shocked that your fiancé, firstly was engaged before, secondly she had just employed him, and thirdly he was good looking. Lots of red flags there.

I wondered how no one noticed the father jump out of the car also.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2023 08:31

@ChessieFL I love his books. Just reading black bird now

@Riverlee glad not just me. Obv all would have seen he got out of the car

Rather then wife screaming thinking he had gone over

I thought it was a real stretch to think Humphrey would have 'worked out' that the family had dropped everything to go to see mum who'd supposedly had a fall (why did they all go, not just dad??) and then en route stopped while she confessed to the affair. No way could he have guessed all that!

TrashyPanda · 04/03/2023 09:23

Lovely to see Donna from Holby.

was really shocked when it looked like the dad was in the car.

My DH thought it was the same actor but it wasn't although they look very similar.

Edward Rowe was in Beyond Paradise and Steve Oram in Death in Paradise

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2023 10:58

Oh they were different

Surely they couldn't have been in the car all night and most of the next day without someone needing the loo or the children being hungry?

LIZS · 04/03/2023 14:24

I wondered that. It was 9:15 am by the time police were involved. The kids seemed very docile and well rested having spent the might in the car.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/03/2023 14:46

The car door didn't even open then the bloke appeared from what would've been the passenger side.

If he had rolled out of driver side, Humph would've stood on him/ seen him when going to the cliff face.

Still not feeling it. I want murders not family spats.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2023 15:34

Excatly. And the police and wife would have seen him get out of the car befjre it rolled :dodgy handbrake

I’ve just caught up. Martha is a wonder woman. In a week (Humphrey said when he asked if she wanted to talk) she has:

rented an old boat shed
got permission for change of use
brought all the furniture
found contractors and got quotes
got them to start work
created a menu and found supplier
organised a launch party.

All after an upsetting miscarriage, she even wanted to ‘christen’ the house boat!

Don’t think the going to get mum after a fall would have people leaving the house with the TV and oven left on. And as pp said, just one of you would go and the other stay with the kids.

Final moan, the wife hugging her husband at the end, this is a man who has threatened family annihilation, not exactly a happy family scenario!

Gosh, I sound a right misery, given for the most part I enjoyed it and like the premise. I like it isn’t murder every time. It allows the writers to be more creative. But I do wonder if modern UK forensics will ruin the vibe of the program a bit so they want to avoid.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2023 18:00

I quite enjoyed it. Though a missing family would usually be a major manhunt. Really hope Martha doesn't go off with her business partner.

KrasiTime · 04/03/2023 18:07

Not sure about it tbh. Doesn’t seem to have the DiP vibe.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/03/2023 18:10

We'll see how long it takes for me to stop calling her Lucy...

She had a storyline in the Bill as a rape victim back in 2006 too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2023 19:00

I like the mystery as well as the murder

But yes a little far fetched (but hey that's Friday night tv) that a phone call would mean mil fallen (lie) and all leave without eating
