Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

Nice to see Montserrat Lombard; not really seen her in anything since Ashes to Ashes.

purpleme12 · 28/02/2023 21:52

I liked it

Just caught up and I really liked it too. I always loved Humphrey in DIP and I was very happy to have him back. Yes you have to suspend belief a little in places, but I'm more than happy to do that. Real life is hard going enough for me! It was really sad at the end though, I'm hoping for a happier ending as we go on.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/02/2023 22:59

@whereeverilaymycat exactly. It's easy watching

I've just caught up - the house reminded me of the one used in the Anne Cleeves Devon story 'The Long Call'.

I thought it was dreadful. So predictable. Really unconvincing- he must have been unconscious for ages and the just got up and carried on while the medics ignored him. Poor efforts at humour and then a horribly sad bit shoe horned in. Bad accents, and unconvincing other police people. Why is the young one so stupid? Nice houses though,

I agree with you. It was dire and I love DIP, but not this.

Following a prescribed script of dippy detective, thick young PC, awful accents, I could go on …..

probably won’t watch again

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/03/2023 07:37

I'm not as immediately taken with it as other things, but I'll give it a bit longer and see.

I did like a lot of the outside shots, very pretty.

It is. And it's not like DIP is particularly realistic either Grin

E2 humph and team are baffled by the mysterious disappearance of an entire family and Martha prepares for the launch of her cafe

@MeinKraft absolutely!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 02/03/2023 18:44

A key to success has to be characters who charm and delight. That's my problem with the new DIP - I don't delight in the characters in the way I did with JP, Fidel, Dwayne, Camille, Florence, Humph, the Commissioner and Richard. You have to want to spend time with them

I agree. DIP made me want to sit in Catherine's bar drinking rum with JP and the gang. Warm and friendly and likeable.

purpleme12 · 02/03/2023 19:03

I haven't watched the other pertinent so I can't compare it to that

purpleme12 · 02/03/2023 19:03

#the other programme

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2023 07:59

You need to watch dip @purpleme12 - Juno was just a character in it. He left as he bet Martha and went back to U.K. to be with her

GoldenCupidon · 03/03/2023 12:19

I liked it, felt more serious than DIP as I can't ever imagine a miscarriage storyline in that.

GoldenCupidon · 03/03/2023 12:41

The office manager woman was absolutely shit though, why do they insist on putting people like that in all series set in the South West? The bunches, I mean I would love to know why they think everyone SW of Swindon lives in the 90s if not before.

They need to watch Happy Valley to find out how to draw interesting characters.

SuburbanCrofter · 03/03/2023 16:07

Devon native here. I couldn't get past the accents. One minute in and I had to turn off, they were so jarring.

GoldenCupidon · 03/03/2023 16:28

@SuburbanCrofter that's Devonian privilege - if you're from Cornwall you have to grow a bloody thick skin to people absolutely murdering your accent from an early age 😂

SuburbanCrofter · 03/03/2023 17:11

@GoldenCupidon you have my sympathy 😂

GoldenCupidon · 03/03/2023 17:32

Flowers thank you

Elderflower14 · 03/03/2023 20:12

Now watching.... Ruth Madoc's last role.... 😔

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2023 20:16

The beginning reminded me of a book by Tim weaver and a David raker mystery

Why does Archie not have a West Country accent? When did Martha move away?

Riverlee · 03/03/2023 20:36

Hi alll,

Would Martha really employ Archie (who’s not bad looking…)?)
