Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

I love Kris Marshall as Humphrey. BUT I'm not really getting this programme at all. It hit me after last night's episode that Beyond Paradise is a copy of Doc Martin but police officer rather than doctor.

UsingChangeofName · 04/03/2023 21:38

I've enjoyed the first two episodes.
It's like the love child of DiP and Doc Martin. Grin

I’ve just caught up. Martha is a wonder woman. In a week (Humphrey said when he asked if she wanted to talk) she has:

rented an old boat shed
got permission for change of use
brought all the furniture
found contractors and got quotes
got them to start work
created a menu and found supplier
organised a launch party.

All after an upsetting miscarriage, she even wanted to ‘christen’ the house boat!

Don’t think the going to get mum after a fall would have people leaving the house with the TV and oven left on. And as pp said, just one of you would go and the other stay with the kids.

Final moan, the wife hugging her husband at the end, this is a man who has threatened family annihilation, not exactly a happy family scenario!

Gosh, I sound a right misery, given for the most part I enjoyed it and like the premise. I like it isn’t murder every time. It allows the writers to be more creative. But I do wonder if modern UK forensics will ruin the vibe of the program a bit so they want to avoid.

Love your list of Martha’s accomplishments Grin

Were they really going to shag in that manky houseboat? Is it even furnished? If so wouldn’t it have old, nasty furniture that needed to be replaced?

MissHavershamReturns · 04/03/2023 22:15

Not loving this on the basis of the first two episodes. Probably won’t bother with episode three.

MeinKraft · 04/03/2023 23:22

I really liked the second episode. Extremely unrealistic obviously but who if I wanted something realistic I'd watch one of the many 24 hours with the police type programme.

I do think it might have benefited from being set somewhere more remote to really get that old fashioned community policing feel they're going after.

I hope Esther gets to develop a bit in the next episode. Her entire role is basically shaking her head in disbelief and irritation at Humphrey. Glad to see Margo and the PC showing a bit more competence this episode.

The christening the houseboat is going to lead to a pregnancy I think. I did feel really sad for Humphrey pining after children through the episode so I hope I'm right.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/03/2023 10:20

Oh I hope so

They deserve happiness

Tho tech if she has just had a failed ivf

She needs a natural period first to be able to conceive as the drugs for ivf would have stopped her ovulating

I know it does sometimes happens in real life (and I like how they have portrayed the issue so far) but won't her becoming pregnant naturally be a kick in the teeth for anyone going through similar.

MissHavershamReturns · 05/03/2023 12:06

As someone who has gone through extended ttc and pg loss I have to say a few things didn’t ring entirely true - the christening comment included. Also Martha had a lot more energy physically than I had after loss. Also the blood thing when he scratched his leg. After pg loss blood was a real trigger for me. I think it would have been for him too.

MissHavershamReturns · 05/03/2023 12:09

I agree @MeinKraft would have been better set somewhere unusual and very remote. I also think the supporting cast aren’t quite working - I don’t like any of the characters even though I’m sure they are amazing actors. Loved Kelly in Derry Girls for example.

The first episode of Death in Paradise was really attention grabbing and well done and the ensemble cast were mostly excellent.

MissHavershamReturns · 05/03/2023 12:09

Kelly not Kelly!

MissHavershamReturns · 05/03/2023 12:10

Ffs my phone just hates Kelby

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/03/2023 12:18

I wish I could do my hair like Esther. Or had a hair and makeup last Who would do my hair like that. Grin

I had a look at the creators and writers. Robert Thorogood created DiP and BP and something called Trackers from 2019, which I think might be on Now.
Tony Jordan is known for known for Hustle, Life on Mars, Holby Blue, Sanditon and if anyone remembers, Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach. He also got a special award at The Soap Awards for his years of work on Eastenders. According to Wikipedia he'd sent the BBC a script about market traders with a covering letter about his east end of London background, despite being from the north. They rejected his script but employed him on the series and he kept up that pretence for five years.

I'm not a fan at all of DiP, but am quite enjoying BP despite all of its obvious failings and plot holes. Maybe it's my mindset as it's a gentle alternative to a lot of the crime drama I'm watching alongside it? Nice scenery and sets and some aaaw moments hit the spot and I don't think about it very deeply at all.

Has the house appeared on tv before?

I think it was in Delicious the tv series on Sky One with Dawn French and Emilia Fox.

We'll see how long it takes for me to stop calling her Lucy...

The two characters are too similar. Typecasting.

MandyLorian · 05/03/2023 20:23

Avid DiP fan, seen all the series and enjoyed them. Hearing about this spin-off interested me, and I've watched the two episodes. Not impressed at all. I knew there was something different and 'off' about Humph but couldn't entirely say what until I read some of the comments about his sudden poshness and the accent. Why have they changed him? Martha seems different too and not in a good way. I understand about the mc (feel sad for both of them but yes, it was just sort of shunted in mid-episode and not really dealt with appropriately. Barely akcnowledged, really. How sad.

The scenery is beautiful but the numpty lad, sneering eye-rolling here-I-got-you-a-notebook colleague and the truly awful Margo completely ruined any hope I had of the series improving. Shame really, as DiP is so enjoyable and cosy and I always looked forward to it.

With DiP, I imagine hanging out at the shack with Neville and Harry, spending a weekend at Catherine's bar with Naomi and Darlene, jumping in the sidecar to assist when Marlon has to give chase and maybe even having dinner and shooting the breeze with Selwyn. BP, on the other hand, makes me want to just shoot myself.

Doubt I'll watch episode 3 😞

purpleme12 · 05/03/2023 21:37

Kris Marshall is like Hugh Grant isn't he

whereeverilaymycat · 05/03/2023 22:12

I'm still really enjoying it! I get what everyone is saying, but I love it all the same.
I like the fact it's not just murder and that they're weaving in some continuity. I always was a big Humphrey fan though, so it was unlikely I wouldn't be a fan. Bring on the next episode!

MeinKraft · 06/03/2023 14:57

'BP, on the other hand, makes me want to just shoot myself.'

Probably best to give episode 3 a miss then 🤣🤣

@MandyLorian i hear you!

I love DIP and have seen every episode. This just isn’t doing it for me though

GoldenCupidon · 06/03/2023 22:33

I’m enjoying it more than I expected, also enjoying that it’s not a murder a week and that same exact formula. Tonnes of plot holes (my jaw literally dropped when she was opening the restaurant or at least launching it one week after renting it and with a (several weeks) miscarriage in the middle. The MC storyline is quite tough for me having gone through similar but I’m finding it is quite good to see it, especially the way they are both suffering together and having to find ways to pull together.

I thought the bit when H got back in the car wasn’t a good sign for relationship stability though. She’s obviously going to be drawn to the guy who is around for her more.

the MIL is brilliant!!! Nice to see that sort of critical mother portrayed rather than the squishy mumsy no complaints type you usually have on tv

purpleme12 · 05/03/2023 21:37

Kris Marshall is like Hugh Grant isn't he

Er, well, um, excellent, yes

BeaLola · 07/03/2023 21:23

I quite like it but mostly due to the scenery and the fact that it's light fluffy tv. The biggest thing fir me to work out was why the receptionist/admin lady looked so familiar - then I realised - she was Bridget Jones coworker in the first film .

Why did the ex fiancée have to turn up just now and run a vineyard - having an old flash who had a vineyard would be very tempting I'm sure (!)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/03/2023 21:40

Perpetua!
