Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

Brilliant would like to watch this , BBC IPlayer so I can re watch .

martinisforeveryone · 25/02/2023 11:20

Loved the scenery tho, beautiful. Athough Mrs Goodman VW Beetle left in the middle of a (obviously pedestrian and TINY) street was jarring. No body should be parking like that.

I can't really disagree with any of your critique @ciderhouserules especially that one above, but, I kind of liked it, in a very roll your eyes, almost so bad that it's good kind of way.

I thought it was a early Sunday evening, curled up on the sofa kind of watch, with some pretty scenery, continuity and plot problem issues, but not at all challenging and some feel good or emotional moments.

I understand why they scheduled it before DiP, but it doesn't seem the best fit for that time to me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2023 14:07

Parking did seem weird - think had yellow double lines one side

Might have to check

Same with dressing gown

Actually @ciderhouserules I didn't remember it like this
She also was wearing a dark blue dressing gown when she went into the loo (to MC, sadly) and a light blue one when she came out...
went back to check and she returned to the house and into the bedroom in a long navy overshirt that she'd been out and about in and rushed into the bathroom as she was. When she came back out she had the light blue dressing gown on. Just a small thing but we can let them off on that one.

I thought it went from predictable to laughable and the miscarriage story line sat uneasily in the middle of it all. Disappointing really, because the cast looked pretty strong on paper.

The very idea that one can telephone a police station though. Here you can hold for hours on 101, literally hours, so the only way to actually make contact is through LiveChat (with a bot) on their website!

Floralnomad · 25/02/2023 15:38

I thought it was fairly enjoyable as light entertainment but have a feeling it’s going to be more about the sub plots than the crimes which will be annoying . I’m also not sold on the explaining the crime with them watching it happen thing , I prefer a proper Agatha moment with everyone sitting round .

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2023 16:18

Where I like that @Floralnomad

Seeing how it happened with them there

What was the significance of the wife remembering cutting her finger in the hospital bed (think there was a brief flashback to it) and then looking at her husband?
I couldn't work out what she was supposed to be thinking 🤔

InMySpareTime · 25/02/2023 19:19

That was her remembering that her husband had an affair.

diddl · 25/02/2023 19:34

It was her accountant that stole the money because her husband-who did cctv was going bankrupt.

Not sure if it tried to be too quirky?

Didn't like the "dim" PO.

Ending too sad.

LIZS · 25/02/2023 19:55

Has the house appeared on tv before?

LIZS · 25/02/2023 20:05

Sorry now catching up the part I missed last night. Was the Ben Wiley actor not in DIP ?

Ah; thanks.
I had assumed it was something more spooky than that 😊

Swashbuckled · 25/02/2023 20:14

@Blondeshavemorefun

Thank you 😊

Meadowfly · 25/02/2023 21:00

The house that lucy the fiancé’s mum lived in has been in something before - I recognised the boathouse. I think it was something about doing up big houses to turn them into wedding venues, and also a poroit.

TrashyPanda · 25/02/2023 23:15

We really enjoyed it. It was gentle and engaging

not seen DIP, loved Humphrey. Very sad ending.

I'm confused, is this guy Martha's ex?
Who is the big cheese?
I may have had wine!

BluIsTheColor · 26/02/2023 17:29

The estate agent guy, is he the ex?

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/02/2023 18:05

Big cheese is the commissioner who rang the female cop - don't know names yet - and she out phone in glove box as that's what humph said he did when he called him

So do we reckon that the big cheese is female cop's ex? Possibly father of her dd who she had a 4 hour relationship with?

ChessieFL · 26/02/2023 18:33

I really enjoyed this. Lovely scenery and a good mystery. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

UnfortunatePoster · 26/02/2023 18:42

I thought the estate agent was just an old friend, and the ex is the one in the trailer for next week?

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/02/2023 23:28

@Lunde no I just thought she didn't want to speak to him 😂
