Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

Did anyone else notice that Martha said Kris at the beginning of the programme when Humphrey was still in the tree? I recorded the programme (in case I missed it) and have watched the beginning three times to check. I even put on subtitles to check. That said Humphrey, but it definantly sounded like Kris to me.

Riverlee · 24/02/2023 22:26

Didn’t really like the chase at the beginning but once Humphrey appeared it improved.

i reckon the brief for the programme was Midsomers Murder / Doc Martin / Shakespeare and Hathaway / Death in Paradise / (and maybe Not Going Out).

Once the story got going, I quite enjoyed it.

pinkySilver · 24/02/2023 22:27

Mixed feelings about this. Some nice humour, some charm. Liked the scenery, liked the female DS. Thought the young police officer was a bit too dim and the other woman in the station too unrealistic. I felt the actors weren't convincing enough, ( maybe over exposed?). And I wasn't engaged enough with the suspects to think anything much about any of them, ( except the husband) and maybe his affair partner. But they needed to set the scene. I think it will improve.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 24/02/2023 22:36

I agree with @pinkySilver . Didn't like the woman in the station, and couldn't engage with any of the suspects. I got bored and started wishing it was over so DIP could start. I may give it another chance next week, but only because its Humphrey.

And Macdonald and Dodds and Detectorists - TV programme by algorithm.

Nice to see Barbara Flynn again, I remember her from ages ago in the Beiderbecke tapes with James Bolam

RedSoloCup · 24/02/2023 22:42

I really liked it 😄

Riverlee · 24/02/2023 22:48

@pinkySilver Yes, I thought the young male dj was a bit dim also. Margot, the office lady improved throughout the programme.

Siriusmuggle · 24/02/2023 22:57

I loved the Bellowhead music too.

MeinKraft · 24/02/2023 23:02

Aw I loved it! I actually really liked that it was a mystery that wasn't a murder. Is Martha going to sack Humphrey off in favour of her ex?

Tapenade · 24/02/2023 23:03

I’m not sure whether I like it or not! Might make my mind up before the end of the series.

Like Humphrey, the DS and the office manager. Don’t like Martha (but she always annoyed me in DiP) or her family, or the weird accents which seem to have come from the Broadchurch school of acting.

pinkySilver · 24/02/2023 23:04

I'll certainly watch it next week. I think it will get better.
A key to success has to be characters who charm and delight. That's my problem with the new DIP - I don't delight in the characters in the way I did with JP, Fidel, Dwayne, Camille, Florence, Humph, the Commissioner and Richard. You have to want to spend time with them. (As opposed to spending time with grumpy, demanding family!! 😂)

pinkySilver · 24/02/2023 23:11

(Martha annoys me too - she's just Lucy in Not Going Out). And the accents are a bit off, "the Broadchurch school of acting" - 😂

She loves humph

Hmmm, I didn't love it. It made me realise how much the setting and theme tune props up DIP! I will give it another go next week but I do hope the characters get a bit more interesting.

newnamethanks · 25/02/2023 07:36

I've never watched DIP and I won't watch any more of this. It's like someone raided the bins for not good enough Midsummer scripts and made the programmes anyway. It was poor, to say the least. Maybe you need to be familiar with the characters to enjoy it.

Meadowfly · 25/02/2023 07:54

The filming was very daytime television, no artistry or flare, all those lovely views and house and yet it looked a bit cheap and dated.

northender · 25/02/2023 07:56

Just can't bear the accents & it ruins it for me, just like Doc Martin. Loved the views of the area as dh is from fairly close to there & I lived down there for 10 years, just over the border in Devon. But accents absolutely never heard in Devon or Cornwall make me cringe

FuzzyPuffling · 25/02/2023 08:12

I'm annoyed that it's set in Devon and filmed in Cornwall. There are plenty of lovely ( and similar) places in Devon that surely could have been used...Newton Ferrer's instead of Looe?

I spotted Port Eliot as the site of the cafe. ( St Germans...also Cornwall)

EndersGame · 25/02/2023 08:36

I enjoyed it - it was harmless nice entertainment on a Friday evening. It maintained the DiP feel and it was filmed in some very nice (Cornish) locations. Whats not to like.

Clawdy · 25/02/2023 08:37

I was so tired last night I fell asleep before the ending. Who pushed the woman, and why? And reading posts on here did Kris's partner have a miscarriage? Sounds very sad.

AggieTop · 25/02/2023 08:46

I was wondering where it was filmed and feel a bit cheated that it was not Devon. Wholeheartedly agree with pps about terrible accents but expected nothing less having had years of terrible accents in Doc Martin. As someone who has lived in Cornwall for 25 years I am always struck by how awful the attempts at Southwest accents are. They seem to just stick an 'arrr' on everything and think that everyone here speaks like a pirate 😁. A bit like the fashion sense of the local girls in Doc Martin who always had terrible earrings and multiple hair ornaments.

Anyway sorry for the rant, actually didn't mind the programme but agree it's very afternoon tv (did anyone see The Coroner which was also set in Devon)?

Business partners wife as stole £180k but was going to pay it back - I think

So pushed her. Moved ladder and body so could be seen

Texted from her phone that she stole to say at home once she was at the cheese party and then friend saw her via window

Trick was discovered by a broom that was standing up then down then up as cameras zoom and swing round every 5 sec so if you know when they do you can escape being seen and she had the same cctv

Obv phone didn't have a code or Face ID 😂

And yes a mc after ivf

And yes watched coroner. That good. Both Devon and Canada ones

Thanks, Blondes !

ciderhouserules · 25/02/2023 11:07

I agree with @Meadowfly , I thought it was dreadful. I love DiP but Kris Marshall was my least favourite DI, and he's the same here.
I thought it had a great cast - why so dreadfully acted? The young PC (from Derry girls, in the same role Hmm) - so thick.

Watch the fishermen in the boat he 'commandeers' to chase the petty thief - they look bored to tears. Grin
He doesn't notice that all the cars nicked were - Red? When pinned on a board right in front of him? he could have smacked his head and said 'Durrrrr' at that point.
And the sudden ringing of ALL the phones - did ALL the owners of the stolen cars notice AT THE SAME TIME that their cars had gone? And phoned in within MINUTES of each other? Hmm
Why the terrible accents - I have a West Country accent myself, and they all just sound - thick.

Why does DI Goodman have to get stuck up a tree? Is it because he is 'the one Kerrazzee things' happen to? I'm so unlucky/scatty/mad, me Hmm
The Police seemed so Unprofessional! The WPC, rolling her eyes when he suggested following up - you know, doing her job? The other woman (a police admin?) saying (about the following up) 'best day of my life' Hmm Looking into other people's lives/financials - Best day of her life? Sounds like someone who would be sharing photos of the crime scenes...Hmm
The 'shading eyes and turning in circles ' to make sure they realised the Blind Spots - what dumbing down. He could have just said - there will be a Blind Spot when the cameras move... It was like watching a group of 5year olds. Hmm

Did no one notice that the stepladder had been moved 10 feet - and so wasn't under the dead lightbulb? Not just the notch taken out of the bannister.

Loved the scenery tho, beautiful. Athough Mrs Goodman VW Beetle left in the middle of a (obviously pedestrian and TINY) street was jarring. No body should be parking like that.
She also was wearing a dark blue dressing gown when she went into the loo (to MC, sadly) and a light blue one when she came out...

I like a murder mystery, but the unprofessionalism, the terrible acting, the awful script, the continuity errors - not sure I'll watch again.
