Don’t read if you are watching one episode at a time. I’m binge watching and loving it. The bloody councillors should be struck off the way they are treating him and through him the other local farmers.

The other people in the show are truly brilliant. We watch everything with subtitles and just seeing " [inaudible] ... and that's what makes the world go round innit" from his mate who has such a thick accent had us in stitches.

Soubriquet · 15/02/2023 10:02

I’m the same regarding subtitles. I don’t understand a bloody word Gerald is saying….and then the subtitles don’t help Grin

Its obvious Jeremy doesn’t have a clue what Gerald is saying sometimes either

I live in an AONB and it's amazing the amount of housing estates that are springing up on farmland that has had to be sold because farming is no longer viable. Our local council will block an application for a local business to extend, a riding school for example, because of the impact on the area's aesthetic, but they'll gladly grant Bovis permission for 200 identikit new builds with all the light pollution, noise, etc that brings. They then turn around and say "no one owns a view" when any of the local community complain.

LadyFlumpalot · 15/02/2023 10:15

That was a long winded way of saying that I'm watching, enjoying and sympathise with his issues with the council. The village of Chadlington will hate a new housing estate more than his farm shop if he has to sell up.

littlefireseverywhere · 15/02/2023 12:03

I live ‘very’ locally to the farm shop, most people have no issues with JC. He’s lived locally for years, helps lots of local charities & makes a fantastic programme! I don’t like his other media stuff but this is excellent, I think. I think the restaurant should go ahead as do most others to provide job’s & opportunities etc for locals. Parking does need sorting but no reason for that not to happen.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/02/2023 13:32

We used to watch it even as a family with dd but not since his vile comments about Meghan

I8toys · 15/02/2023 15:18

I'm waiting so can binge watch at the weekend. Really enjoyed the last series and don't want to get into a debate about MM. Its entertainment.

Hbh17 · 15/02/2023 15:24

He may say stupid things occasionally, for effect, but he is a smart and articulate journalist. These series have really opened everyone's eyes to how badly farmers have been treated - JC can only do it because he has a huge separate income. He is trying to bring employment and business to his community and the more small-minded in the village/on the council are looking a gift horse in the mouth.
And, come on - he can be very funny!

Just finished watching episode 8, very enjoyable series. To the villager who said he’s not a farmer, he’s a media personality, yes he is and that’s why it was said after one series he’d done more to raise issues farmers face than Countryfile did in over 30 years. That’s because he’s a popular presenter, making shows people enjoy watching.

bellac11 · 18/02/2023 11:26

Im not a massive fan of him as a person but I watched the first series and we're now making our way through this one. My eyes have really been opened about issues in farming and as others have said he is doing more to bring those to light than pretty much anyone has in the last 30 years.

The issues about the planning permission and the fact that they do seem to be treating him vindictively

And the cost of that appeal to the secretary of state!!!!

I think the series is very well done, love Caleb and Gerald (are they related?).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/02/2023 11:27

It's mad isn't it how regulated it all is. In s2, JC has a quarry area on diddly squat land he takes some dug up soil/rocks to. Even to do that, on his own disused land, he needs a permit.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/02/2023 11:28

No, racist, misogynist. Why would you want to?

Meltinthemiddle · 18/02/2023 19:40

I'm loving it and it really highlights the issues of farmin. Alot of what JC says is for effect I honestly don't think he means it. He does alot of charity work. PM on the other hand is a nasty piece of work.

newnamethanks · 19/02/2023 11:00

Which bits of what he says do you think he doesn't mean? Can you tell?

Soubriquet · 19/02/2023 11:03

It’s so relatable isn’t it. He’s so down to earth that you really feel for him.

It really does open your eyes to what the British farmers have to go through

Sadlifter · 19/02/2023 11:54

Really enjoyed the second series and felt particularly entertained by the highlighting of the petty local council.

Really loving this series but quite saddened to see the utter bullshit farmers experience regarding planning issues and bureaucracy. Having to change the shop roof to slate! Needing a permit to move soil! It really does feel like the Council are victimising Clarkson because of who he is.
I'm so glad I don't live in Chadlington because some of the locals there are coming across as small minded, snooty, jealous twats. Actually crowdfunding for a barrister. They don't care for farmers and obviously don't want the great unwashed visiting their village. I'd hate to live amongst such unfriendly people.

Soubriquet · 20/02/2023 19:22

Not just chadlington. You find that sort of attitude rife in most villages where people never move out.

billysboy · 21/02/2023 06:27

Just finished watching this series which I thought was really good
the planners need to be made accountable for their decisions which smack of Nimbyism at its worst

FrostyFifi · 21/02/2023 13:50

If I had forked out 1.5 million plus to live in a small quiet village in an AONB and Clarkson rolled up and started industrialising a nearby farm without planning permission I would be thoroughly pissed off

That's in fact what I took from it. Wealthy retirees who want some sort of idealised rural experience and don't give a stuff if the actual locals who need to make a living in the agriculture industry lose their livelihoods as long as it doesn't interfere with their cushy retirements.

mumsneedwine · 21/02/2023 14:07

Industrialising ? He wants a small shop and restaurant. Hardly an Amazon warehouse - although this might be what they get if he chooses to sell his farm.

FrostyFifi · 21/02/2023 14:19

Quite. I hope they enjoy that or the large Taylor Wimpey estate that will be coming their way if they drive the farmers out of business.

Unfortunately this is driven by national government policy on housing. A certain amount of housing is required of an area, and regardless of whether its built on farmland, the council have to deliver it. It's happening where I live, and if the council reject housing development it gets taken to an inquiry where a national planner (who isn't local) makes the decision. Where I am these massive housing developments are happening regardless of what local people or local councils think.
