It has been searched over and over again. If you bothered to listen to the expert recovery team they said it was impossible for her to drown there or if by some miracle she had, it would be next to impossible that she would float downstream. I am not expecting her to turn up in the river. Nor is anyone else.

The police have jumped to the wrong conclusions influenced by their assumptions she was drunk or suicidal etc.

Sorry but that's incorrect. The experts checked from the bench to a mile up. He didn't believe she'd of floated over the weir had she drowned accidentally. He is now saying had he known this info his strategy for searching would of been different. Essentially what he means is, if she chose to go in herself she maybe walked to the weir and willingly went over it. In that case he would of searched from there down to the sea.

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 21:15

I am a massive fan of the police, but they have messed up this investigation from start to finish with a catalogue of mistakes, missteps and misguided theory. Now they want to close it all down by dismissing her as menopausal alcoholic.

So if she's still alive (hoping she is) the whole world now knows about her sensitive medical history. That's not great and certainly won't encourage her to come home if she's taken herself off somewhere.

it's diabolical what they're trying to do here. there is no reason for the public to know this information about alcoholism/menopause other than for the police to 'absolve themselves' of any responsibility for having not found her or having any meaningful leads.

This exactly what I thought. Releasing that information to the public was completely unnecessary

He?

Yes, he. The search expert Peter Faulding.

So we can now safely assume that menopausal women that have alcohol issue are not worth a thorough land search or a serious criminal investigation, because of course they will have just thrown themselves in a river.

It’s an astonishing acknowledgment that the police had reasons ( like the menopause causing drink problems) not to escalate the search, that to their mind it couldn’t possibly have any other conclusion to her disappearance.

I am personally offended, I am menopausal and partial to a glass of wine does that mean I will be dismissed if I am abducted on my dog walk tomorrow? Are we all now collectively written off? Misogyny at its absolute finest. Again from the police. Worse still served up by a menopausal woman called Rebecca smith who should know better.

Gilmorehill · 15/02/2023 21:30

Surely it’s highly unlikely she could have walked off somewhere, given the amount of CCTV/doorbell footage. Given that it’s a rural area, she’d either have to go on foot or by public transport. She’d have been spotted eventually surely.

There was a concern for welfare call to the police 2 weeks beforehand so it's possible she was suscidal then.

She was wearing two coats she could have ditched one, put the hood up, hair down and disappeared as not everywhere was covered by cctv. The thing is women like her become invisible. Nothing about her stands out.

We have no idea why the call to the police was made, none.

Mellymoon · 15/02/2023 21:33

It was a lot of time spent saying nothing at all. There was no information that wasn’t already widely known and all it did was open the poor partner up to more spectulation and scrutiny. It was a shameless cashing in by channel 5.

About 4 years ago on Boxing Day a woman disappeared in Newcastle. Her husband woke up and she wasn't there. The police found her on CCTV in the early hours walking from her home in her pyjamas and a waterproof jacket and hiking boots into the city- about 3 or 4 miles away. She walked along the quayside where the bars and hotels are and disappeared where there was no CCTV. She didn't look ill or anything- was walking quite energetically. The police were sure she had gone into the river but despite really thorough continual searches by divers, radar, coastguards, police for about 3-4 weeks could not find her. The police kept saying 'there is no evidence she left the small area next to the river where she was last seen on cctv going towards'.

People online behaved so badly- speculating about what might have happened: husband had murdered her, neighbour had murdered her, she had got into a car to leave her life behind with a man she'd met, she'd had a stroke and was lost, a brain haemorrhage, was drunk, had arranged to be picked up in a boat by her secret lover, had been murdered by a man leaving a bar or a hotel, had had a mental breakdown and was hiding in some pigeon crees, had been buried in an allotment. The posts on Facebook were disgusting . Locals were mainly very loyal and supported the family- who were very grateful for that- there were some nutters of course like the man in the boat who sppointed himself 'Captain Save-the-Day'.

People came from all over the country to see where it had happened, to walk the stretch of river, to take photos. People were googling her family home and posting photos. They all knew someone who knew her and had said xxxxxxxx. Rival Facebook groups sprang up. People began arguing with each other (calling each other 'hun' in their rows). A man was taking people out on his boat on the Tyne to search the river- the police had to ask him to stop. They were all river experts knowing she could not possibly have been in the river with all the searching and not been found.

It didn't matter what the police said or did, people just would not shut up with their stupid speculation.

Her family were so dignified.

Eventually, the gawkers and armchair detectives lost interest, the tragedy tourists stopped coming, the press lost interest and it was forgotten about.
About 4 months later her body was found floating by someone on the other side of the Tyne about a mile downstream exactly where the real river experts had predicted it would eventually be found. It emerged she had suffered from depression and low self-esteem but the police had not released the info publicly.

There is a lesson here but, as usual, it will not stop the idiots continuing with their criticism and speculation.

Such a sad story and so many parallels. And such a sensible and empathetic post @LuluBlakey1 I wish for the same as you.

I’m in two minds about the decision they made to release what they did today-maybe, just maybe they’d thought that everyone would just stop with all the nonsense. But seems not.

MourningTea · 15/02/2023 21:35

I forgot alcoholic and menopausal women can't possibly be murdered or abducted.
It's daft to even consider that is something that could occur.
Of course we should jump to the conclusion they were suicidal (like the police have).

100% this. I am so saddened and furious about it all.

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 21:38

A police visit might indicate domestic issues. If there were indeed domestic issues caused by any number of reasons does it not make it more likely she has walked away? It might also raise questions about a third party motive.
It would not automatically mean a mother of two throwing herself in a river.

Since when is it nonsense to be concerned for a missing woman and hold Lancashire police force accountable for their growing list of mistakes?

hyperemesis · 15/02/2023 21:44

FancyFanny · 15/02/2023 21:08

'she likes a drink and is menopausal’

That's not what has been stated at all - you're being dismissive of what are clearly significant issues.

No it’s not what’s been stated but that’s how it’s going to translate to a lot of people . It’s almost irrelevant information actually. I think it’s wrong they’ve disclosed that- the incident that was attended fine but the alcohol / menopause info really isn’t necessary

Sporty2022 · 15/02/2023 21:46

But if the Police and experts haven’t worked out what happened to her, how are armchair detectives going to know?
Im sure Lancs Police will know more about what’s happening than Annie on Twitter.

HopefulRose · 15/02/2023 21:47

@Blessedwithsunshine thank you for articulating so clearly why I am angry about this.

The police have really messed up here.

I have had alcohol issues and have mental health issues which has resulted in a few welfare checks from police but that does not mean if I go missing its because I walked out or killed myself and I would hate my history and mental state to be used against me and alter the investigation or the publics view of what may have happened to me.
