From the beginning this whole case has felt ‘off’ and it’s the reason the public won’t give up.

Cornelious2011 · 15/02/2023 20:41

@Blessedwithsunshine
How are emergency services being called to your house a few weeks before someone disappears not significant? It's totally significant to anybody related in any way to that household. Was it a medical emergency, mental health crisis, dv incident?

MermaidEyes · 15/02/2023 20:41

FancyFanny · 15/02/2023 20:29

Police don't visit you because you are menopausal and drink a bit more than you know you ought to! There was a clearly a significant incident at their house.

Yes, especially as the police have also said 'No one has been arrested in relation to this incident but it is being investigated'.

LuluBlakey1 · 15/02/2023 20:42

About 4 years ago on Boxing Day a woman disappeared in Newcastle. Her husband woke up and she wasn't there. The police found her on CCTV in the early hours walking from her home in her pyjamas and a waterproof jacket and hiking boots into the city- about 3 or 4 miles away. She walked along the quayside where the bars and hotels are and disappeared where there was no CCTV. She didn't look ill or anything- was walking quite energetically. The police were sure she had gone into the river but despite really thorough continual searches by divers, radar, coastguards, police for about 3-4 weeks could not find her. The police kept saying 'there is no evidence she left the small area next to the river where she was last seen on cctv going towards'.

People online behaved so badly- speculating about what might have happened: husband had murdered her, neighbour had murdered her, she had got into a car to leave her life behind with a man she'd met, she'd had a stroke and was lost, a brain haemorrhage, was drunk, had arranged to be picked up in a boat by her secret lover, had been murdered by a man leaving a bar or a hotel, had had a mental breakdown and was hiding in some pigeon crees, had been buried in an allotment. The posts on Facebook were disgusting . Locals were mainly very loyal and supported the family- who were very grateful for that- there were some nutters of course like the man in the boat who sppointed himself 'Captain Save-the-Day'.

People came from all over the country to see where it had happened, to walk the stretch of river, to take photos. People were googling her family home and posting photos. They all knew someone who knew her and had said xxxxxxxx. Rival Facebook groups sprang up. People began arguing with each other (calling each other 'hun' in their rows). A man was taking people out on his boat on the Tyne to search the river- the police had to ask him to stop. They were all river experts knowing she could not possibly have been in the river with all the searching and not been found.

It didn't matter what the police said or did, people just would not shut up with their stupid speculation.

Her family were so dignified.

Eventually, the gawkers and armchair detectives lost interest, the tragedy tourists stopped coming, the press lost interest and it was forgotten about.
About 4 months later her body was found floating by someone on the other side of the Tyne about a mile downstream exactly where the real river experts had predicted it would eventually be found. It emerged she had suffered from depression and low self-esteem but the police had not released the info publicly.

There is a lesson here but, as usual, it will not stop the idiots continuing with their criticism and speculation.

Gilmorehill · 15/02/2023 20:07

I agree. She hasn’t consented to her private information being broadcast nationwide. Saying she was high risk was more than enough.

Exactly, they should have said she was ‘high risk and we will not be commenting on the reasons why’. Let people speculate if they want to (it was either going to be a mental health issue or a physical health issue), but its not their right to disclose it to the general public. If she is out there, I hope she can see the support the general public have for her ❤️

I think this is true. So many experts think it's unrealistic she fell in the river. And even though abductions do happen, they're still extremely, extremely rare, especially in a 10 minute window in a small community in broad daylight.

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 20:44

GoChasingWaterfalls · 15/02/2023 20:39

And yet you have literally just stated that she is not in the river. So your conclusion is OK but everyone else's is premature?

You seem awfully invested? Need to fess up to something?

Given the extent of the river search and the scenarios mapped out about the depth of the river, clearly it’s now much less likely that she will be found there.

No conclusions either way. It’s a damn shame they didn’t do a proper land search or take the bench to forensics. Or even cordon off the area until they found her.

BudgeUpAnne · 15/02/2023 20:45

@LuluBlakey1 I remember that, Sally Allan I think her name was. I wasn't aware her body was found. I think the same will happen here sadly

It was a two hour window

And now we know why they didn't do any of that. The police decided 'drunk menopausal woman' right from the start and went from there.

GingerScallop · 15/02/2023 20:47

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 20:28

Umm they said do themselves. The investigation was based on the high degree of vulnerability. Clearly they totally dismissed criminal third party involvement based on their flawed theory that she was in the river. Based on no evidence whatsoever.

I recall in a different case a police officer saying we classified as high risk or high vulnerability. That simply means they assess risk factors which then allow them to say the person is in danger and allocate more resources. Am not sure what they mean in this case but doesn't necessarily mean they dismiss other areas of investigation. Also if someone drinks a lot, has MH issues has police called to their home then yes they may have a high degree of vulnerability. That is not being negatively judgemental. That is deduction. I am sometimes very vulnerable because I can be extremely naive about people as I dont always read faces, intentions as well as others.

I'm sorry but some menapausel woman get suscidal whever you like it or not. The police will have got info off her husband and maybe go, I really can't believe people are still having a pop at the police they can't do right for doing wrong!!! It was evident that police were eitholding info from the public but now they have had their hands forced probably because of all the shit that's gone on in the village!

Togoodtobeforgotten · 15/02/2023 20:50

That should have said gp

FancyFanny · 15/02/2023 20:51

How would taking the bench to forensics help? You think she was murdered on the bench?

Quite. So many (tragic) parallels here

sure, and menopausal women are also kidnapped and murdered, whether you like it or not. in fact ALL women are at a higher risk of violence committed against them, regardless of their hormonal or mental state.

the police have fucked this up royally by focussing on one hypothesis based on their biases about Nicola.

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 20:56

CanStopWillStop · 15/02/2023 20:46

Absolutely.
It’s made a bad situation a million times worse. It now looks like the police dismissed her or any third party involvement simply based on the menopause and alcohol issues.

I might also like to add that in situations of domestic violence - a team can be sent. We don’t know why they were there - we can’t assume it was because of Nicola. We don’t know. To me the offering of this level of personal detail is unheard of, and we really have to question why we are being told.

ilovesushi · 15/02/2023 21:00

@CanStopWillStop agree 100%. They wrote her off from the start.

hyperemesis · 15/02/2023 21:01

I may be wrong but it feels like no matter what it’s been decided she went into the river by the police and now this drip feeding to further fit the narrative. It just feels wrong. It feels off

MaryDerry · 15/02/2023 21:01

There was no way people/media weren't going to keep on digging away with just the statement "highly vulnerable".

This is such a mess.

Information is not given out for reasons. We might not like or agree but the police want to resolve this just as much as everyone else.

Feels like they want everyone to go ‘oh right you are then , she must be in the river and especially now you’ve let us know she likes a drink and is menopausal’ and wave them off as they pack up and stop searching

Meltinthemiddle · 15/02/2023 21:04

The main focus is on finding Nichola and finding out what happened. How can we make judgements on the police when we don't know all the information. The police had withheld it out of respect but due to lots of speculation and criticism they have had no choice but to release it. And now they are being criticized again! As someone who is peri I have felt suicidal, I have thought about running away. Disappearing. It really changes you. This is one of the things I thought of when I saw she was a few years older then me. She also had the perfect FB life this is never the case! I definitely don't think their life is as perfect as it was portrayed. But yes we can't rule anything out.

I agree it’s as if they decided immediately what happened and cannot deviate from that original idea

FancyFanny · 15/02/2023 21:08

'she likes a drink and is menopausal’

That's not what has been stated at all - you're being dismissive of what are clearly significant issues.

The one thing we do see is that the police most certainly didn’t keep an open mind at any stage. They allowed assumptions and biases contaminate neutrality and the case. And I can’t help but think how bloody convenient the police were called just a few weeks before…

This feels as fishy as hell.
