No C5 and no ITV but BBC1,2 and 4 and Sky News and Arts as well as Channel 4 are available on my Virgin Media package.
As well as Virgin Media 1 and 2 which get many ITV shows but later than UK. 🙄

JaneJeffer · 06/02/2023 18:51

I can get C5 but can't record that either

I like Esma's re-writes Grin.

I don't like the picking apart of some posters who weren't thrilled with the ending or the series as a whole in some cases. People should feel free to post their opinions without facing scorn/condescension from others on the thread. I'm not going to out myself but I do know a bit about TV script writing so don't feel my opinion is any less valid than anyone else's.

I agree.

I loved the end though would have liked (say) another 20 minutes to tidy up some odds and ends, but everyone has a right to like or dislike, and to offer their opinion on what would have improved it, added tension - whatever. Others may agree or disagree, but everyone's entitled to throw their hat into the ring without being made to feel uncomfortable.

I've enjoyed @EsmaCannonball 's comments enormously, though I don't always think the same way as she does. There is a lot of thought and insight in them and they are worth reading for that alone.

I wondered if the police could hear the exchange between Catherine and TLR once she hit the alarm on her radio. We had the subtitles on and 'indistinct chatter from radio' kept coming up, so just wondering if it is a thing that they can listen and possibly record for evidance if an officer in peril alarm goes off. Anyone know?

Definitely did. I had subtitles on too and it was more obvious that Catherine was feeding info to the team via her radio. When she said 'do you need an ambulance Tommy? I think you do need an ambulance' the subtitles showed the radio saying 'ambulance has been despatched' or something similar in response.
I'm assuming that those radio calls are recorded and that meant they heard Tommy's confession re Darius and that would be evidence to help get him arrested and then convicted

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/02/2023 19:23

We agree to agree ESV!

It would be nice if there are some areas on Mumsnet where people don't get into arguments and I'd like to think Telly Addicts is one of them Smile.

This is also what I liked about the series - the ‘baddies’ weren’t some sort of criminal masterminds like they usually are in long running police/crime series where there is a key ‘enemy’.

TLR was just a very damaged individual, whose lack of empathy made him dangerous because he was so vicious and unihibited in his violence. A brutal thug. None of the criminals were particularly clever - either desperate or thugs who control through sheer violence.

I once taught a child who was difficult and violent from the very start and had a weird relationship with his mum. He was also very attractive and could be charming when he wanted which I always thought would make him more dangerous as an adult. He's in prison now for several violent crimes sometimes you can just see how things will go. Another one who's mother had left when he was 2 brought up by a criminal dad, also in prison. Very sad and not much you could do to change things.

Minimalme · 06/02/2023 19:32

I loved it - everything about Catherine's life was brutal and unforgiving and the end reflected that.

She was like a gothic fairy Godmother at the end, getting some sort of justice for Joanna and Becky.

My favourite part was where she said that she had won the fight.

I loved her toughness - surrounded by human weakness and yet she never wavers or looses her way.

And our Ryan did his Mum and Gran proud.

Towntroubadour · 06/02/2023 19:33

I think most police have body cameras.

I really liked the ending. It somehow just felt right. No great showdown but incredibly interesting dialogue between the two main characters. We needed the gap between Catherine asking for police and them coming to have those scenes between Catherine and TLR.

I liked the loose ends with PE teacher and pharmacist. I felt that I knew they’d get what they deserved but I didn’t need to see it.

I agree...

This. ^ I am glad someone has said this. I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm also pissed off with the posters (not many thankfully,) who are sneering at the posters who saying they wanted, and needed the loose ends tying up (re; Faisal and Rob etc...) Or they would have preferred a couple of things towards the ends to have been a bit different.

Comments like 'not all of us need spoonfeeding what happened,' and 'oooh the writer must be quaking in her boots' (when someone suggested a different ending,) and 'the writer knows most of us are more intelligent than to need the loose ends tying up' are just rude. Basically, implying the posters saying they'd have liked a few loose ends tying up, or weren't overly happy with a few bits of the finale, Tommy setting fire to himself etc, aren't as intelligent as them. Confused Utterly bizarre, and bloody rude frankly.

Intelligent or not intelligent, or somewhere in between, nothing changes the fact that what happened to Faisal and Rob was not revealed. As a number of posters have said now, another 15-20 minutes added on to tie up the few loose ends, would have been nice.

As you say @Emotionalsupportviper, people are entitled to say that, and have their own views and opinions, without posters acting like they're BETTER because they didn't need or want the explanations. Totally unnecessary to be rude to people who have different opinions. You have your views, I have mine. Yours aren't any more right than mine, and you're no better than me. OR any more intelligent!

Upshot is (as I said earlier,) I thought it was amazing, the whole series, and I pretty much enjoyed all of the Finale. I, (like a number of other posters,) would have just liked a couple of loose ends tying up (re; Faisal and Rob...)

If I had to change one thing about this final series it would have been the pacing.

I would have opened with the finding of the body in the reservoir and TLR's confession and then cut right to the court case and have the escape at the end of the first episode. I'd then have Catherine discover about Ryan, Clare and Neil visiting TLR because as prison visitors they would be persons of interest in his escape. We could still have had the wonderful confrontation scene between Catherine and Clare and all the fallout.

I would have had the horrible PE teacher grooming Ryan and trying to sexually blackmail him already established in the first episode. It would have been something that was building before the series even started.

Similarly, I would have started the series with Faisal already paying up to the OCG and in over his head with Joanna, and would have had her murder in the first or second episode.

I would have Richard deep into an investigation of Darius and the OCG right from the get go. I think he needed to be placed in actual danger.

I would have had TLR loose and able to become embroiled with all the other characters from the second episode. I don't necessarily mean running around with guns and killing people, but maybe building up more tension about what exactly Darius was going to do with him, maybe something involving Ryan and the PE teacher to tie the two storylines together, maybe having a scene with Ann or breaking into her house just to mess with her head. I like the way his escape ended but there would have been more scope if he'd been at large for longer.

I did love the series and I did 80% love the final episode. I just felt that this series built things up which didn't pay off because too much was left until the very end.

I would have loved to see it play out that way.

I loved it the way it was but wish we could have alternate options - this sounds great. I think we could have seen more of Richard, Ann etc and this would have been excellent.

upinaballoon · 06/02/2023 20:01

I'm going to be prosaic. Did CC ever take that anorak off for 3 days and have a damn good wash? I so wished that she'd let Alison make her 2 pieces of toast and two cups of tea and have a little freshen up in the bathroom, before she strode off to sort out the world.

I'm going to have to look up tasers soon, to see how they work, because of what TLR said to her after he'd thrown petrol on himself.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 06/02/2023 20:05

OK, I've buckled and gone back to series one, episode one again.

(To hark back to an earlier thread) our Catherine is convinced Becky was raped and says she has written proof that Becky left behind. Don't think we ever see that?

And the fire motif... the first scene is when someone threatens to set themself on fire, almost TLR's first single shot close up is of him lighting a roll-up with a lighter... it was all there, from the beginning.

Gilmorehill · 06/02/2023 20:06

I would have liked Catherine to have acknowledged that Tommy was the way he was because he’d had such a dreadful upbringing. Ryan grew up in a nurturing environment which is why he turned out so well. Tommy said he liked Becky because she made him feel normal (I think that’s what he said). He’d no role models or functional relationships to look at when he was growing up which is perhaps why he became so abusive towards Becky when she rejected him. I think he honestly did love her but had no idea how to conduct a normal relationship. He was damaged.

sweatervest · 06/02/2023 20:17

knobchops hepworth was on this morning. holly was agog and loves hv. dickhead schofield was eurgh and patronising as usual.
plus ryan was on loose women but i haven't watched it yet. (fyi tbh)

i wonder if ryan would go to tlr's funeral. would catherine take him? who else would go to tlr's funeral? apart from all the TLR fans on this page.

no mother. no familly apart from ryan. don't think darius would have turned up. would he have had a pauper's funeral? is that what it is when you get buried by the local authority if you haven't got any family. i am overthinking this i realise but i am sad that james norton can't ever play tlr again.

i felt very sad at work today becuase of the demise of tlr. and hardly ANYONE at work watched hv so how on earth was i supposed to cope????????!??!

I watch with subtitles despite having no hearing loss, and it seems to me that you would miss quite a lot without them.
Did anyone HEAR them saying "ambulance 5 minutes"?
Maybe my hearing is not as good as I think.

Don't tell me I'm going to have to watch a 3rd time?

I thought the ambulance question came before she hit the alert button on her radio.

JaneJeffer · 06/02/2023 20:40

@sweatervest I reckon Catherine would take Ryan to the funeral for closure

Minimalme · 06/02/2023 20:43

Catherine never wavered on her view that Tommy was 'born wrong', nature over nurture.

Once she knew Ryan wasn't like his Dad, Tommy lost his power over her. She knew she had won. He had taken Becky but he couldn't take Ryan.

Minimalme · 06/02/2023 20:45

JaneJeffer · 06/02/2023 20:40

Agreed - she conceded to her sister that he should have been allowed to make up his own mind about his Dad.

sweatervest · 06/02/2023 21:03

@Minimalme @JaneJeffer
getting completely into tlr's funeral (i think it's thursday week. have booked the day off work) then i suppose claire and knobface neil would go too except how would claire and knobface neil explain that to nevvvvv and annnn although claire and KN will be back home by then. and claire and KN don't have to explain themselves to nev or ann but it's still a biggy. i bet ryan would be so upset. losing both parents to suicide is unimaginably awful.

someone bring tlr back to life. also back to life with daisy duggard is on par with something brilliant tbh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2023 21:06

I always have subtitles as deaf and she turned the volume knob down

Then subtitles showed ambulance on his way

Back up 5 mins etx

So she knew was coming

And once she bleeped her sos location guess all was recorded hence why she turned volumne down so that Tommy wouldn't hear what was happening

diddl · 06/02/2023 21:11

I thought the ambulance question came before she hit the alert button on her radio.

She asked before when she first saw him & then again after he'd pushed the knife away & she hit the button.
