Dare I say something possibly controversial...

It's about the actor who plays Ryan.

I am not sure if he was very good. He seemed gormless to me and a bit stiff....maybe it was brilliant acting of your typical teenager.... but maybe he just wasn't that talented once they'd waited for him to grow up for the final season.

Umanresources · 09/02/2023 22:23

The OED has a word of the year, I am hoping that this year it will be “wankertron”. How good would that be, having it immortalised in the dictionary? 😂

Pemba · 09/02/2023 22:36

@MBappse nooo! I thought teenage boys WERE a bit stiff and gormless? I think he's very good and natural seeming, Sally Wainwright and James Norton rate him, and they waited for him to grow up to film series 3.

TanyaandGreg · 09/02/2023 22:37

I haven’t RTFT so I don’t know if this has come up but I fancy the senior policeman - does he have a name? With short brown hair and polo shirt. I don’t know if I should be having a word with myself.

I also love the Kieran Hodgson impressions!

Mike Taylor? You're not alone but he's smaller than expected Grin

Great idea 😊

I agree. My teenage DSs & their friends are all a bit gormless, so Ryan seemed quite normal to me Grin

There was me thinking I was the only member of the Mike Taylor fan club…

HannaHat · 09/02/2023 23:19

My 14 year old nephew is 6ft and reminds me very much of Ryan (gormless 😂)

I thought Ryan came across completely plausible based on my own experience with teenage boys. I particularly liked him asking when he would get his Xbox back from the police. So true to life!

fairypeasant · 10/02/2023 09:15

Yeah, Ryan was very true to life! And has great acting mentors, so I expect the actor is one to watch.

I loved that he seemed like a real, awkward teen galumphing about. In an American production they'd have cast someone much slicker. And made him implausibly articulate, giving thousand word monologues at the drop of a hat. Ryan felt like teen boys I know.

BIWI · 10/02/2023 10:01

If you watch Rhys Connah being interviewed here you'll see that, as a person rather than an actor, he is much more animated. So I think that the way he played Ryan was brilliant - he totally typified a teenage boy

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2023 10:05

Yeah, my nephew is that age, and he's just like that. Says as little as possible to everyone except his mates, console obsessed and suddenly a taller, skinnier, deeper voiced version of how he was last time if you don't see him for a while.

It seems there’s 3 of us Grin Anyone else want to join?! He may be somewhat petite but that is not putting me off Jane.

I thought the actor playing Rhys was great. I think the writing helps, much more natural than so much of TV, so it’s easier to give a more realistic portrayal of a teenager.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2023 10:23

YY my 14yo is just like that Barbara Grin

I live in Halifax and so much is filmed here.

One big question from me- Catherine’s other grandchild. Daniel had a baby in the second series but s/he’s not mentioned once in series 3? Seems odd in contrast to how they are with Ryan and that he seems to have just shirked responsibility without accountability.

Other than that, the best programme ever- outstanding. One of those programmes that comes around every decade that you will never forget.

I've told myself that Daniel's ex was so angry she went back to her own family and refuses to have any meaningful interaction with theCawoods, or to let her baby have anything more that she absolutely has to either.

DO we get a badge?

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2023 11:00

I liked Mike too.
It was strange that Daniel's child was never mentioned, although he apparently had a fling with an ex whilst his partner was giving birth , so maybe she had nothing more to do with him after that! Understandably.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 10/02/2023 11:34

One Mr James Norton has retweeted the Kieran Hodgson sketch 😂
