They used to something like this in the earlier series. Not always, but occasionally a chef would be invited to finals week to just do one course.

OnTheBoardwalk · 10/02/2023 23:10

I wasn’t sure if I’d made this up in my head or something that really happened.

they should def bring this back

knittingaddict · 11/02/2023 08:37

I remember them putting through a particular dish from a chef who didn't win the round at least once. It never seems to happen now.

I have noticed that the chefs seem to have been given the green light to help each other out. I wonder if this is a result of one of the judges getting arsey with the chefs for doing this last year, while other judges had no issue with it. Seems only fair because they help each other at the banquet too.

LIZS · 11/02/2023 08:53

Think they have in some previous series selected a standout dish for each course to compete in finals where the menu did not get through overall.

Sunbird24 · 11/02/2023 09:02

Agreed, one wildcard dish for each round could work - those chefs would be less stressed than the chefs they were competing against though as they’d only have one dish rather than a whole menu to worry about, unless they’d got the wildcard for several courses.

OnTheBoardwalk · 11/02/2023 12:47

I liked Nick's main but would love to see the crocodile at the banquet

BigFatLiar · 11/02/2023 12:51

I think it's a flaw in the format. During the rounds they choose a menu and then atvthe finals they choose individual dishes so the whole menu idea goes out the window.

However if they had a wildcard it would send a message that actually despite the options being presented this was better.

They need a format where they simply select the best dishes. A bit like a final each week, rather than choose the high score menu review each dish from the region and select the best.

I suppose in the first rounds it stops everyone just concentrating on getting a 10 for their mains and not trying as hard on the other courses

agree the final 2 should be winner per course

I've been on holiday, just caught up.

I like the theme I like that they're doing well with the theme and not shoehorning as much as the last couple of seasons. But it feels like a re-tread on the back of kids books and tv that have been done recently.

Was sad the young female chef didn't get through to judging, for south west, darn freezers.

Wasn't convinced that they didn't fudge the scores for the south west, I thought burn down the house was ahead of Banksy from the comments.

Thought week one the north east was great standard but nothing crazy exciting must go to the banquet.

A lot of the dishes have been more cheffy than wow the public.

Michael o'hare's shoes should get their own dish at the banquet.

I cannot remember Westy, despite him being called Westy.

Sunbird24 · 14/02/2023 20:07

Ooh bit late, missed the canapés!

jay55 · 14/02/2023 20:08

Evening. It's started late on iPlayer, was confronted with an unwelcome greggggg

EsmaCannonball · 14/02/2023 20:10

They should just call this round the mushroom round. (I like mushrooms. Sorry.)

EsmaCannonball · 14/02/2023 20:11

Wasn't Bella Lasagne also featured in Mind Your Language?

Floofydawg · 14/02/2023 20:15

I cannot remember Westy, despite him being called Westy.

His chefs whites are a touch snug.

jay55 · 14/02/2023 20:16

Lorna looks like she's still a contestant in her chefs jacket with her hair pulled back

EsmaCannonball · 14/02/2023 20:20

Between this and the repeats of Come Dancing, I'm all for mums making stuff for going on the telly.

Botw1 · 14/02/2023 20:22

I missed the veteran judges name but is she always as crabbit?

EsmaCannonball · 14/02/2023 20:22

That pastry looks very pale.

Not many of the chefs seem to be making an effort with the visuals this year, which given the brief ......

lettingthedaysgoby · 14/02/2023 20:23

Hurrah! for chefs who can do a vegan dish without turning to mushrooms.
(I'm on a 10 minute delay due to having to taxi DD to the station)

Botw1 · 14/02/2023 20:22

I missed the veteran judges name but is she always as crabbit?

I think it's her first time as a judge so she's probably nervous... shes not done much telly.

JazzyGeoff · 14/02/2023 20:25

Ouch...

Note to contestants- the comedy beards/gloves etc only really work when you've smashed it, not when you've bummed out and are three minutes late.

Poor cow.

I think she's actually nice, just a bit dour in a Private Frazer kind of way. (I'm part Scottish. I can say that!). I liked her as a contestant. IIRC, in the NHS year she revealed she had a blood condition that required lifelong treatment.

JazzyGeoff · 14/02/2023 20:27

Barry's Discount Toy's has had a blinder on the fireman's helmets this week

JazzyGeoff · 14/02/2023 20:28

God that looks like the miserable-ist starter I've seen in a long while
