I'm sure I'm not the demographic it was aimed at (mid 40s) but I really enjoyed it. Bit cliched in parts.

Found it maddening to begin trying to place who the Lockwood character sounded exactly like!

Started watching it with DS2 yesterday- we both loved it!

Justcashnosweets · 28/01/2023 21:26

Yes! I have just binge watched it with poorly dd, absolutely loved it 👌

Justcashnosweets · 28/01/2023 21:28

Lockwood does sound like someone else...Orlando Bloom maybe??

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/01/2023 21:50

To me he sounds the absolute spit of Bear Grylls. I even googled to see if he could be one of Bear's kids. He isn't.

Just at the end of episode 2 @DrMadelineMaxwell and enjoying it so far... not sure about the changes to the books but it's great seeing that world brought to life!

If you've read the books too then I think it's fair to say we enjoy the same authors Grin

DaVariance · 28/01/2023 23:41

Just starting it now

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/01/2023 23:54

Judging from our usernames janelockland, it's a fair bet we do like the books. 😁

Does he sound like Tom Hiddleston ?

I'm really enjoying it so far

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 29/01/2023 00:22

Yes, loving it so far amd desperately hoping for season 2!

Flavabobble · 29/01/2023 07:02

I watched first two episodes yesterday, would've watched more but had to go to bed. I'll be watching more as soon as I get in from work today. I've really enjoyed it so far.
I like all the cast, the male lead could've only been 19 at the most when this was filmed but has a real presence about him. Sounds a bit like Benedict Cumberbatch to me.

verdantverdure · 29/01/2023 16:58

All the 80s music is putting me off a bit. Is it meant to be set in the 80s?

DaVariance · 29/01/2023 18:34

I loved the Cure playing during that sword ⚔️ fight it worked brilliantly for me

mum2jakie · 29/01/2023 18:36

What channel is it on?

ladymalfoy45 · 29/01/2023 18:38

Watched it . Brilliant. Shoutout to fellow DM"s

pointythings · 29/01/2023 18:53

I haven't read the books (but am now going to as I really enjoyed the Bartimaeus Trilogy) but have really enjoyed the series. I'm also not the demographic (54) but I don't care.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/01/2023 18:58

It's netflix. I've not come across the books before, but do read a LOT fantasy. So I've downloaded book one and really enjoying reading it so far. Skipping through a couple of the character descriptions that really don't match who they cast them with for the series, as that's what the people now look and sound like in my head now. But I think they did a fair job of adapting most of it, from what I've read so far.

I watched some today, I rather liked it. Joe Cornish is a good director

The locations were great and the world building was interesting. I was trying to pin point the timeline - the opening credits talked about The Problem starting 50 years ago and in the first episode one of the ghosts was an actress who went missing in the eighties - so is it supposed to be set in the late 2020s? Much of the tech seemed stuck in the eighties - landlines, videos, tapes, diesel trains, no internet or mobile phones, boxy old fashioned looking cars. I assume The Problem somehow halted tech development and it remains stuck in the mid eighties? Important plot point or narrative device to avoid questions about why they don't use modern tech to help with investigations?

Like Stranger Things I think this will attract the interest of an older audience (like me!) nostagic for the world of their childhood.

JaneLockland · 29/01/2023 21:41

@Ginmonkeyagain I don't think the timeline is ever specified (or not in the books) - it was roughly equivalent to present day when the books were written about 10 years ago but IIRC, technology had developed differently due to the Problem, hence it was an alternative timeline - no mobile phones, internet etc.

@DaVariance good shout with Tom Hiddleston, I agree Grin

Shout out to fellow DMs @ladymalfoy45 and @DrMadelineMaxwell and are either of you going to the Jodiworld conference?!

Vetoncall · 29/01/2023 21:46

I'm watching episode 2 now, enjoying it so far. I'd never heard of the books until today but will definitely look them up now.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/01/2023 21:47

@JaneLockland thanks. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise they weren't using any modern tech!

They recreate the wotld of the late eighties/early nineties well - recording tapes, cutting out job ads from the newspaper!

I just realised it is set in London but no one appears to use the Tube. Is the tune just too ghosty I wonder?

JaneLockland · 29/01/2023 23:01

@Ginmonkeyagain the Tube is mentioned in the later books - you're right, it's too ghosty! Too many ghosts in the tunnels from crashes, suicides etc. I don't think it's specifically mentioned as no longer used in general, but in the books it's only used as somewhere quiet.

Jonathan Stroud was at a book festival near to me a few years ago talking about his books, I would have loved to go but we were booked to be away for MIL's birthday and I missed it Sad I contacted the organisers to ask if the festival would be on the next year and they said yes, definitely - however that was 2019 so of course it never happened SadSad

DaVariance · 29/01/2023 23:07

They're so well cast aren't they. Loving it and hope they're already filming the next series

We’re the same and finished it last night.

I said he sounded like Anthony Bridgerton, DH like Tony from Skins - odd that all the characters are called Anthony!

BowiesJumper · 04/02/2023 09:07

I also loved it (42!), haven’t read the books. Fingers crossed for a season 2, you never know with Netflix.

MyCreation · 05/02/2023 11:53

I’ve just finished it and enjoyed every minute. I know it’s aimed at young adults but like Stranger Things I think it’s going to appeal to all ages. Im in my 60s. Loved the writing, the dark academia vibe, the acting and the story. I didn’t realise it was based on books. The actors compared with the wooden, forced and frequently cringingly dreadful actors in Harry Potter are brilliant. I didn’t think the UK could ‘do’ convincing child/teen/young actors but wow, they were so good. They better do a second series after that ending.
