I'm sure I'm not the demographic it was aimed at (mid 40s) but I really enjoyed it. Bit cliched in parts.

Found it maddening to begin trying to place who the Lockwood character sounded exactly like!

I finished watching the whole series last night and enjoyed it even though I am not in the intended demographic (55).
Interesting that it is based on books - I did feel that there could have been more explanation of the situation and characters and I suppose it is in the books. Will have to dig them out!

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/02/2023 12:09

@MyCreation Joe Cornish seems to have a knack of finding good child/ teen actors. John Boyega was in Attack the Block as one of his first films.

WeAreBorg · 05/02/2023 18:56

Would you say this is okay for kids? Like 12 and under or is it more for a teen/mid-forties geeky lady audience? I fulfil the latter criteria 😂

CatChant · 05/02/2023 19:22

The DC, DH and I loved the books and were sceptical that a television adaptation would do them justice. We’re up to episode 5 now and approve wholeheartedly. Wonderful cast and direction.

However, I doubt either of my DC would have slept for a week if they’d seen the series when they were under 12. They both went to bed with lavender pouches and something made of iron or silver when they read the books and they were both mid-teens then!

Eek thanks! I’ll wait until they have aged 😂

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/02/2023 19:59

It is pretty creepy in places but more dread and creepy atmosphere than gore and outright horror. The ghosts you do see are pretty scary though.

Being older it is the shots of an empty London at night with an all pervading sense of threat that I found the most scary.

Quartz2208 · 05/02/2023 20:03

Certainly not as creepy as Stranger Things which we have just finished and Dd loves it (13) although she also likes Lockwood actor

George reminds me of both Richard Ayoade and Simon Bird

hellobethyname · 05/02/2023 20:10

In last one now - it's. Bit hammy and childish and I think they're trying to make Lockwood into a young Sherlock or similar - but I found it quite entertaining!

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/02/2023 20:30

I can see that. And the limitations of it being YA means it focuses on adventure and the younger people, as an adult I am more interested in the state and economic apparatus that has built up around "The Problem". For example why does no one get public transport and why don't the , numerous, cabbies talk?

mrwalkensir · 05/02/2023 22:33

It's more detectivey than scary. And I think like Stranger Things it's for us who were listening to Bauhaus in our teens and our children...

Gunpowder · 05/02/2023 22:39

I watched it with DDs 8 and 10 and we all loved it! It is scary in parts - so not for faint hearted under 12s, but less so than Dr Who.

I feel like the director gave the following notes - "Lockwood: Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, but with more charm. George: Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, but with less charm." 😆

Quartz2208 · 06/02/2023 07:36

Funny you should say that the way they go into the title sequence and music really reminds me of Sherlock as well plus the addition of Molly Hooper!

hettiethehare · 06/02/2023 07:42

Oh, DD (8) has been watching it with DD (13) as she loves the books and has been counting down to the series. The 8 year old seems fine!

ArseMenagerie · 06/02/2023 07:49

Watching it with all the DC - 8-15 and they love it!

Right at the very beginning when you could only hear Lockwood's voice and not see him, I thought it was Jude Law!

Sparkletastic · 06/02/2023 08:13

Two episodes in and loving it. Apparently the signs aren't good for Netflix to recommission it though ☹️

Thank you!! Could NOT work out where I knew that actress from.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/02/2023 20:44

Shame if it doesn't get a 2nd series. They only used the plot from the first 2 books for the current series so there's lots of scope for another.

I am really enjoying this - those who like it tell all your friends to watch so that it gets a 2nd season! Fun show

CormoranStrikeIsBloodyLovely · 07/02/2023 06:15

I am enjoying it.
I think the actor playing Lockwood is doing a fab job. Amazing that it is his first acting role!

TikTok has is full of montages about the show so it is getting a good following, hopefully Netflix will renew for another series.

Rainbowdrops2021 · 07/02/2023 06:52

Me and dh watched it, probably not the intended age of the audience but we thought it was great! I loved the soundtrack too.

Igotthegoose · 07/02/2023 14:11

Myself and DD (11) started this last night on this thread recommendation. We both loved it and can’t wait to watch more!

DD wasn’t sure at first on watching the trailer and said it looked ‘old fashioned’ and ‘can we watch Anne of green gables again’ but she chose to try the first episode and said it was really good. Thank you!

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 07/02/2023 14:18

Loved it. I especially loved Flo, she was brilliant. And the sometimes sardonic talking skull was fun.

To be honest, as soon as I heard Joe Cornish was involved, I was sold. He’s great.

I remember DS reading the Bartimaeus (sp?) trilogy when he was younger. I don’t think I knew about this series. Are there many books?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/02/2023 17:52

I think there are 5.
