Drama starring Joanna Scanlan, Iwan Rheon and Alexandra Roach, about a woman still grieving for her daughter who disappeared 18 years earlier.

Sharon Roberts (Scanlan) has spent nearly two decades searching for her daughter Ela's (Ella Peel) body. Shortly after she vanished, mild-mannered gardener Joe Thomas (Rheon) was arrested and charged with her murder after Ela's DNA was discovered in his caravan.

Joe confessed to her murder but refused - or could not explain what - he did with the body. Now Joe is being considered for parole, and if he is released, Sharon's greatest fear may be realized: she will never get Ela's body back and the past will torment her for the rest of her life.

Journalist Cat Donato (Roach), who's originally from the same town, has always been interested in Ela's murder. It's a very personal story for Cat, who has always kept an eye on the story, and the news that Joe is due for parole prompts her to return home to write an in-depth article and discover the truth one and for all.

But will she be welcomed back to the town where she grew up? Meanwhile, Sharon is also desperate for answers - and she'll go to any lengths to get them...

I think it’s rather slow

and the daughter feels she’s in the shadow of the dead ela

as was his mum ?

and hence why can’t say where body is as he didn’t kill bed

I just found this today on demand and watched the first two episodes, enjoying it so far. Trying to think where I’ve seen Cat’s boyfriend/colleague before 🤔

It does feel like it’s working towards a scenario where he didn’t do it but is protecting someone else.

Ela is the dead girl. The main character's daughter.
I think Shelley is the murderer's sister?

Hoping this isn’t a spoiler, but Shelley seems to have gone missing and no one has mentioned it. Unless she died and the mum with dementia can’t remember?

It's very amateurish , reminds me of the Ch 5 ones ! But I do want to know what happens ! The questions Cat , the journalist , is asking , would've already been answered in the court records , or old newspapers .

I think maybe she was involved somehow as her old friend Caryl said Cat used to fancy Joe and when she was talking to the policeman , he said she grew up better than expected . But probably red herrings !

The actor is Doc Brown. He’s been in a few things, mainly comedy, but he was definitely in The Inbetweeners.

His older sister IRL is the author Zadie Smith.

I’m quite enjoying this so far.

I think the journalist character is ridiculously two-dimensional and wooden. Dialogue from that character is terrible and unbelievable. Very very mediocre.

Both the journo amd the Mother were in No offence I think.

Yes, the last scene was a woman searching Joe Pritchard on a German search engine. Possibly Shelley. I noticed Joe said “There was a fight” but didn’t say who was fighting. Ela and Shelley? And Ela is accidentally killed?

Joe's father distinctly said to the journalist there was no one else - just himself the mother with dementia and his estranged son Joe. Yet we know Joe has a sister.
Why hasn't the journalist asked about Shelley ? She would have known Joe had a sister.

Something happened in the caravan no sh*t Sherlock but we didn't see Joe actually attacking Ela.
Perhaps Ela attacked Shelley and Joe got involved ? Things escalated, Ela died and
Joe told Shelly to run, helping her to move the body but not knowing where she went.
Or
That's Ela in Germany. Shelly is dead.
No idea really. 😀

Too many young female characters with red hair. Very confusing.
But I definitely think the sister did it and Joe took the blame.
the journalist is very unlikeable.
I also thought the wedding dress was awful. It didn’t fit her properly.
