Motherland Christmas special is one of the best Christmas shows ever

Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t watched it (it’s on Netflix and BBC I player season 3).

It’s hilarious! I love every single character!

from Julia’s stressful Christmas preparations (trying to handle the in laws, her useless husband phoning her while stuck in TK Maxx asking her for ideas for presents), Kevin attempting to play all of Mine Kraft (and his very Hitlererque way of pronouncing it) and being attacked by Charlie, Meg’s partridge rap, Liz being Liz and wanting to stay in to watch Hereditary again, the “cocaine” incident at Amanda’s party and then Anne’s look of horror as she goes to answer the door seeing the gang back again “I was just getting the bins”. And everything about Amanda. She’s an awful person but I truly think Lucy Punch has created a brilliant character.

And hot Sam Shepard too! I do wonder who did all the prep for Julia though.

Can’t wait for the new Christmas episode!

Yes absolutely! And the scene when they are all in Amanda’s bedroom during the party is the best TV comedy scene ever. The characters are so cleverly drawn and it’s a really astute social satire, combined with brilliant laugh out loud slapstick.

It really is a brilliant episode. I hope new one matches up!
I love one off Christmas specials. They often distil what's best about a comedy series.

Yes. It's very funny, but not massively subtle or plot-driven. You'll recognise the characters.

God I love Amanda! I also love that they have hinted that her type of man is actually someone just like Kevin. The episode at the swimming pool with her old “the one that got away” was basically Kevin. I had hoped they would get together.

i read in the TV guide that in the latest episode airing tomorrow Amanda has to spend Christmas with Johnny (her ex) and his new partner. There’s a lot of pathos in the way Amanda is portrayed (all of the main characters actually).
