Hello all GPTD fans the next series has been announced and will start on 8th January at 7:45. It’s a Sunday night and it’s on Channel 4 as usual.

Festive Pottery Throw Down is on Christmas Day too. James Fleet, Jamie Laing, Jenny Eclair and Sunetra Sarker are the celebrities taking part this year.

I agree. The editing also showed that George would be getting the boot. There were lots of soundbites with George talking to camera. It was obvious he was for the chop. I'd rather keep guessing until the end.

After the umpteenth mention of George's pot being in one piece, I said to my husband "George's pot is definitely going to break". It couldn't have been more obvious.😨

I liked George, so sad to see him go.

Ah, my friend - I think it was the representation, not the place! 😉

ArcaneWireless · 13/02/2023 15:13

😊

How expensive is VERY ?

Second hand wheel 500€.
New kiln 2000€ (currently costs 8€ for a glaze fire, 5€ for bisk).
Clay roughly 15€ for 10kg.
Glazes, I make my own. Most of the basic ingredients are pretty cheap, but some of the additives are €€€. I just bought 10g (yes, ten, that's about the weight of 2 doritos) of silver nitrate and it was over 20€.
Wheel bats, cookie cutters, decorating tools etc. over 300€ (and that's with quite a lot of DIY).
Then there are the extra workshops that you can attend to learn different techniques, usually ranges from 200€ to 400€ depending on how many days it is.
On top of all that, I attend weekly workshops with a professional ceramicist, at 300€ a year.
I don't drink and I don't smoke, so I figured the money I might have spent on those would have been more than I spend on pottery supplies 😂. No regrets.

Lachatte

You're own workshop like not a potters wheel in the shed I take it ?

I appropriated our garage as my pottery workshop, so more than a wheel in a shed, but not a professional ceramics factory either!

Take up drinking and smoking love, it'll be cheaper 😉
Just joking! I'm sure you'll be fantastic. Attach a picture of your finer wares.

It's hello with a name change !

Well the first 6 week course is £135 . But that's everything. Sadly I don't have a garage but I'd happily buy a little studio for the garden if I really love it .

I've seen you can make your own kilns (basic ) - but I presume yku can pay a kiln owner to fire you work if you get going ?

I'm just gonna do the introduction to ceramics and see where it takes me ! I'm extremely excited! And if I love it I'll happily spend a bit of money on it as I do nothing else exciting!

AnyaMarx · 13/02/2023 21:39

Lachatte-
Do you need two different kilns for bisque and glaze ?

AnyaMarx · 13/02/2023 21:47

Or just two different temperatures

God this is gonna be a learning curve!

LaChatte · 13/02/2023 22:00

Same kiln for both, just different temps (980⁰c fir bisk, 1260⁰c for glaze).
It really is just a hobby for me. Luckily I have a clumsy family who often break cups and bowls, so I get to make more!
The only person I accept money from is my DM as she orders stuff to give as presents (and even then I only ask for her to cover the cost of materials and electricity). I love making things for friends and family.
I do make stuff to sell at the workshop (for the workshop) I attend weekly, that helps to buy extra tools and to repair the kilns for example.
I won't post photos as I have them on social media and you never know who might find me on here if they really have nothing better to do with their time (I don't think I've ever posted anything too personal, but still).

LaChatte · 13/02/2023 22:03

Forgot to say, I literally started after watching season one of The Great Pottery Throw Down in 2015.

AnyaMarx · 13/02/2023 22:27

Thanks Lachatte! That's great . I'm really excited to start my course . !

funnelfan · 14/02/2023 19:01

Sorry to see George go, but didn't anyone think the lighthouse at the base of his lamp looked rather phallic due to the angle it was sticking out at? It was rather distracting and even DH commented on it!

Emotionalsupportviper · 14/02/2023 20:19

'Tis your Bad Mind @funnelfan . . .

"To the pure all things are pure" and all that.

Mr Viper said summat similar

(George was a Master of Smutty Innuendo 😂, so it wouldn't surprise me if anything <koff, koff> ambiguous was totally intentional 😜)

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/02/2023 20:55

I had exactly the same thought about the lighthouse!

AnImaginaryCat · 15/02/2023 22:33

I may have had some thoughts on the appearance of the lighthouse.

Wolfcub · 19/02/2023 19:44

Evening all

LaChatte · 19/02/2023 19:44

Evening pot heads 😁

Piggywaspushed · 19/02/2023 19:47

Evenin'

I was watching the BAFTAs but pottery drying was preferable.

Wolfcub · 19/02/2023 19:48

Yay someone is making a pangolin

LaChatte · 19/02/2023 19:49

Wolfcub · 19/02/2023 19:48

Yay someone is making a pangolin

Isn't that one of the original Covid suspects?

Wolfcub · 19/02/2023 19:51

Probably only because people keep insisting on using the poor buggers as medicine

Piggywaspushed · 19/02/2023 19:52

They used to have a different name , didn't they?

LaChatte · 19/02/2023 19:53

Loving the ferret story 😂

Maireas · 19/02/2023 19:54

LaChatte · 19/02/2023 19:49

Isn't that one of the original Covid suspects?

Indeed. Put me right off pangolin stew.
