I’ve seen it before and am eagerly awaiting the next series to come out in November(?) but decided to start watching again after the Queen died.

Have never watched it and started it today. King George has just been found dead in his bed! Think I'm going to enjoy it.

Its really very good

I am not a Royalist but wish them No Ill.
I started to watch during Lockdown and was completely hooked very quickly
Watched every season and looking forward to the next one.

Just started watching it

ColinRobinsonsFart · 20/09/2022 23:47

I have been rewatching too! I am at the bit where Charles meets Camilla ( early 1970s)…

it’s an excellent series to have on whilst doing something else…

Dannifaye · 21/09/2022 00:17

The Aberfan episode is heartbreaking

How fictional is it and does it not bother you that you don't know what's true and what's not? I'm tempted to watch it but...

It’s fictional but based around actual events. I’m really into history so I knew about the abdication etc even though I’m not old enough to remember it lol ! I can mention a few things on here that are not true however, Spoilers! I am aware people haven’t watched all of it etc. I find that the big historic events are true but they fill in the bits in between, interactions between characters that we couldn’t of course know about. Also there are lots of articles on the internet about what is true/false in The Crown but obviously you have to be careful and just Google that episode or whatever it is that you are wondering about otherwise you could come across spoilers.

Yes rewatching s1 s2 soon thought got rid of3 most of it bored me to tears except the wales tragedy episodes. S4 got as well.

Yes my favourites were early series with Claire Foy and Matt Smith, I felt they had more chemistry together although I think Olivia Coleman and Tobias Menzies( Philip) were both very good in their roles and are really good actors.

@ZenNudist have you seen The Tudors ? (A lot more racy than The Crown) or more “highbrow” Wolfhall which is excellent if you want a Royal fix

Thanks @667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast
I think I'll give it a try!

Yes nothing against the actors it was just the episodes that just bored me to tear the spacemen one was just drivel. I disliked s3 so much I couldn’t face the the last two episodes someone tell me it’s worth getting again for the family Charles story. I’ll skip most just watch the wales mining and those episodes.

Yes absolute awful and the worst thing was the mining board or whoever it was had been told it was dangerous. Such a terrible tragedy

We are! Heard good things about it but never got round to watching. We're on episode 6 of season 1, really enjoying it so far

When I saw that landslide I was horrified it was just dreadful should never have happened.

I'd been binge watching season 1& 2, around the time that Harry & Meghan & Harry left!

I was incensed! Talk about over invested 🤣!

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 21/09/2022 19:14

@Always4Brenner the spacemen story was fabricated I think I read , obviously the moon landing happened but Prince Philip didn’t take that much interest in it

I want to watch all the crown, the queen and the kings speech. Then depending on my mood after that I might start Victoria again.

newbluecurtains · 21/09/2022 19:37

Just came online to start a thread on The Crown and found this! I happened to be watching it, I was 2 seasons in when the Queen passed and now halfway through season 3.

I feel like they portray the Queen quite negatively? I'm 27 and come from a family who are at best apathetic to the royals so I know very little about them, and I know the show is fiction but it still represents real people. I feel like she is portrayed as incredibly naive and hardly able to make a decision for herself?

I know she became queen very young but it seems like the character had little to no education in international relations or diplomacy, certainly not politics or economics. Currently the PM is devaluing the pound and she is travelling the world sorting out her horses for racing.

As a character I just find her really naive, makes bad decisions, and generally not suited to the job at all. I wonder if people were unhappy with her portrayal or if it's just me that sees the character like this?

I thought that for the first two series at least she was portrayed quite sympathetically, in fact I looked at the Queen in a more positive light after watching this. It highlighted what a struggle it had been for her and what a huge weight of responsibility “the crown” is. She does find her feet but it was hard for her as I don’t think it was common knowledge among even close family how ill her father was and therefore she was not as prepared as she should have been. I think the doctors at the time initially even hid the fact it was cancer from the King himself. I also see it as her struggling with protocol etc.

Weirdly I did a rewatch of it about a month before the Queen died! I just finished S4 rewatch as I hadn't seen the series until earlier in the year.

FayeGovan · 22/09/2022 11:06

Ive started watching it.

It sort of makes you realise how lonely the queen must have been.

Yes definitely I think that’s what made it even worse for her when Philip died. Obviously she had her mother and to a certain extent her sister, although I don’t think her and Margaret were that close in later life. She did have her ladies in waiting though who were with her for years but ultimately the responsibility rested on her shoulders alone
