When they said that, they meant it. The intention was that Sidney and Charlotte would end up together. Justin Young has said there was a 10 page outline for that in S2 which was sent to Theo James but he didn't want to come back so they had to completely rewrite.

And I'm very glad things turned out the way they did. 🙂
