Need to brush up my German. Can anyone recommend good German drama series (preferably crime/thriller type) please?
Must have English subtitles.
We have Netflix and Prime as well as catch up for mainstream channels.
We've seen Deutschland 83 etc

Thanks

Ahhhh @greenacrylicpaint - it's been a while since I've seen Klaus and his Stapelgabler! 😆

Dinner for One (although of course it's not actually in German)

MmeMeursault · 01/08/2022 19:52

The German end of war one is The Defeated and it's on Netflix

GrumpyPanda · 01/08/2022 20:13

Here's a wiki list of current German TV series but be warned it's the good, the bad, the ugly, and the just all-out trivial mixed in. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_German_television_series

Unfortunately the best crime series, in particular if they're a few years old, don't seem to have subtitles at all - I guess producers haven't really been thinking about international markets until quite recently. Nonetheless, if you ever feel up to it, I'd really recommend "Unter Verdacht" with Ulrich Mühe who starred in "Das Leben der Anderen". There's an all-season DVD set available. "Unter Verdacht" with Senta Berger was also quite good, as was the Bella Block series.

Thanks again, really appreciate it.
I had found lists of available series but wanted recommendations for things worth watching too. Thanks to you all there is lots to go after.

Thanks for reminding me about 'Dinner for One', I was introduced to it by German friends many, many years ago when I had my one and only New Years Eve there. Hilarious, although probably an acquired taste!

Heimat - the tv series - is available to stream (I loved it - but it was the 90s?though and was practically the only thing worth watching at the time!)

MumOfNowGrownupKids · 01/08/2022 22:37

Deutschland 83/86/89

MumOfNowGrownupKids · 01/08/2022 22:37

All 4

RampantIvy · 01/08/2022 22:39

I was also going to say Heimat and Das Boot

JS87 · 01/08/2022 22:42

We just watched Dark and it definitely improved my 20+ year old German.

Awrite · 01/08/2022 22:50

The film The Lives of Others is one of the best film I've ever seen.

I remember watching a really good German series with Saga from The Bridge in it. I've had a Google and it's called The Same Sky. Set during the Cold War, in the 1970's. I found it fascinating.

Sorry, neither are crime dramas (which is my favourite genre) but they are German. And good.

Skinterior · 01/08/2022 22:51

Babylon Berlin

CandyLeBonBon · 01/08/2022 22:51

Dark. Worked wonders for my German!

Lemonblossom · 01/08/2022 22:59

Dark is the best thing Netflix has ever done and my German was back on track after watching it too. I was quite proud of the moments where I had to multitask and look away from the tv but could still understand what was happening

greenacrylicpaint · 02/08/2022 07:02

top tip for learning a language - watch it eith the subtitles for that language.

the dark subtitles are ok.

Twizbe · 02/08/2022 07:07

Another vote for Dark. I don't speak German but DH does and we watched that together. Loved it (except for the annoyance and non of the characters carrying umbrellas when it clearly rains a lot where they are)

Goodbye Lenin is a great film as is Downfall. We also watched a comedy recently called he's back or something like that. It was about Hitler waking up in modern day Germany.

Chersfrozenface · 02/08/2022 07:28

The German crime series I've watched, some already mentioned, which are still available. Ranging from good to average but none unwatchable.

Walter Presents, All 4
Dark Woods (different series from 'Dark')
Nordic Murders
inspector Borowski
Inspector Falke
23 Cases

BBC4
Beck

Bratnews · 02/08/2022 07:32

Came on to also say Das Boot.

Also Dogs of Berlin on Netflix

I agree but need these subtitles to be in English if DH watching. German subtitles if watching alone.

Is it ?
Oh how wonderful Me and my Dear Dad loved Heimat .
Where would I stream it please ?

Trinity65 · 02/08/2022 10:27

Heimat was 1984

greenacrylicpaint · 02/08/2022 10:46

there is also a true crime series '1988- Das Drama von Gladbeck' about a bank robbery & kidnapping.

abcd4321 · 04/08/2022 00:42

4Blocks is set in Berlin among gangsters.

Doormatnomore · 04/08/2022 00:48

I came to say Babylon Berlin and How to sell drugs online (fast). But I can never remove the names of things so had to wait till other people said them first. How helpful of me.

also, my friend says you can change the language of some shows so they are dubbed. I don’t know how they sound to a native speaker but she’s using it that way to help her grandchildren learn her first language.

choirmumoftwo · 04/08/2022 00:55

I really enjoyed Der Pass (Pagan Peak). Beautifully filmed but very unsettling as the peak from the title looms over everything.

Babylon Berlin

Series 4 will be with us soon!
