Not sure about this but has good reviews so ……..

e1&2are tonight

The six-part Australian series stars multi-award-winning actress Anna Torv (Mindhunter, Fringe) and Sam Reid (Prime Suspect 1973, Lambs of God)

The show centers around the frantic, busy heart of a commercial TV newsroom set in the 1980s, while following the relationship between an ambitious young TV reporter and the star female news anchor.

Created by award-winning writer Michael Lucas (Offspring, Five Bedrooms), the series depicts the dramas and tensions of this high-octane workplace as well as investigating the political and personal power struggles of the world.

The Newsreader comes to BBC Two and iPlayer with a UK release date confirmed for Sunday, 24 July at 9PM.

A teaser shares: “Torv plays Helen Norville, a glamorous and talented newsreader and, in the chauvinistic world of TV news, often overlooked. Helen finds herself partnered with junior reporter Dale Jennings (Reid) and their personal and private relationship will be set against the very public pressures of reporting some of the most iconic news stories of the era to the nation.”

Further casting includes Robert Taylor (Longmire), Logie Award winners Stephen Peacocke (Five Bedrooms, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), William McInnes (Unfinished Sky, Blue Heelers), Chum Ehelepola (Lodge 49, Lady Dynamite), Michelle Lim Davidson (Utopia, Get Krack!n), Chai Hansen (The New Legends of Monkey) and Marg Downey (Fast Forward, Top of the Lake: China Girl).

Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition, BBC, said: “The Newsreader is a superbly made drama which cleverly interweaves key news events from the period, 80’s nostalgia, office politics and personal relationships in a thoroughly engaging and entertaining style

It's really refreshing to watch a drama that doesn't involve a woman trying to escape a psychotic husband which seems to be all ITV are interested in showing.

JaneJeffer · 03/08/2022 20:20

There's a thread about houses on TV which reminded me I had wondered about the houses the newsreaders live in and whether Dale could afford that apartment? @BoreOfWhabylon you might know?

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/08/2022 20:30

Well, a nurse friend of mine rented something very similar, although smaller. That sort of thing would probably have been affordable as a house share for the likes of us, but I imagine TV types would have been paid more than nurses.

JaneJeffer · 03/08/2022 20:54

It's certainly a lot fancier than my 80's digs Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/08/2022 21:38

The standard of accomodation and general cost of living was much better in Oz than here at the time. I believe prices have rocketed since though.

Crinkle77 · 04/08/2022 23:22

I found Dale to be a rather odd character. The way he moved was very robotic and always seemed to be quite nervy. His boss was right when he called him a drip. Helen I found a bit cold. I don't think I'll watch again. I just didn't really like many of the characters and I don't really care enough about them to watch again.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/08/2022 22:04

Looking forward to how this ends tomorow

JaneJeffer · 08/08/2022 11:31

Evelyn annoys me so much. She's a control freak.

Well done Noelene.

Looking forward to series 2 now.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 11:57

oh evelyn is appallling.

Thesearmsofmine · 08/08/2022 12:04

We really enjoyed watching this, glad to see there is a second series coming. I loved Noelene and Rob.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/08/2022 16:44

Evelyn is appalling but she's a great character!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2022 16:52

Why is she appalling

Juicesausagecake · 08/08/2022 16:55

It’s phenomenal. We watched the lot: one a day, and it really made my week.

I have been hoping for a thread on this: superbly acted, beautifully written … so gentle. And quite hilarious, too, with a strong moral thread.

I hope it isn’t a spoiler to ask why ‘sausage roll muncher’ might be derogatory?

SummerLobelia · 08/08/2022 16:56

I saw this last night for thr first time and loved it.

I'll go back and watch the others if I can and would love to see a second series.

It was quite sobering to see how attitudes were towards people with HIV back then. I can sort of recall it although i was young.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/08/2022 17:10

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2022 16:52

Why is she appalling

She's completely ruthless and plotting and conniving to ensure her husband stays top dog at the Network

GU24Mum · 08/08/2022 17:13

I found this (the programme, not this thread!) by chance on Saturday evening and love it!

JaneJeffer · 08/08/2022 17:23

I hope it isn’t a spoiler to ask why ‘sausage roll muncher’ might be derogatory?
It was just a comment on Rob's eating habits. He's always snacking Grin

I'm totally in love with Tim (as is Dale - he just doesn't know it yet)!
