Not sure about this but has good reviews so ……..

e1&2are tonight

The six-part Australian series stars multi-award-winning actress Anna Torv (Mindhunter, Fringe) and Sam Reid (Prime Suspect 1973, Lambs of God)

The show centers around the frantic, busy heart of a commercial TV newsroom set in the 1980s, while following the relationship between an ambitious young TV reporter and the star female news anchor.

Created by award-winning writer Michael Lucas (Offspring, Five Bedrooms), the series depicts the dramas and tensions of this high-octane workplace as well as investigating the political and personal power struggles of the world.

The Newsreader comes to BBC Two and iPlayer with a UK release date confirmed for Sunday, 24 July at 9PM.

A teaser shares: “Torv plays Helen Norville, a glamorous and talented newsreader and, in the chauvinistic world of TV news, often overlooked. Helen finds herself partnered with junior reporter Dale Jennings (Reid) and their personal and private relationship will be set against the very public pressures of reporting some of the most iconic news stories of the era to the nation.”

Further casting includes Robert Taylor (Longmire), Logie Award winners Stephen Peacocke (Five Bedrooms, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), William McInnes (Unfinished Sky, Blue Heelers), Chum Ehelepola (Lodge 49, Lady Dynamite), Michelle Lim Davidson (Utopia, Get Krack!n), Chai Hansen (The New Legends of Monkey) and Marg Downey (Fast Forward, Top of the Lake: China Girl).

Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition, BBC, said: “The Newsreader is a superbly made drama which cleverly interweaves key news events from the period, 80’s nostalgia, office politics and personal relationships in a thoroughly engaging and entertaining style

OK, I'll wait until it's been shown though.

I've also read that a second series has been commissioned and is in production now Smile

Great news re 2nd series. It really needs one.
Nolene is my fave character 😊

I'm on episode 3. It's watchable but it's not grabbing me. I feel like something is missing but can't quite put my finger on it.

It's the lack of smoking. It's supposed to be the 80's Grin

Didn't really fancy it at first but now I'm hooked.
Noelene is my favourite character too 😆😃

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/08/2022 10:22

Noelene and Rob are my favourites. Noelene and the other non-white characters are anachronisms though. Things may be different now but at that time, other than the Chinese community, there were very few people of non-european heritage in Melbourne, due to the previous White Australia immigration policy, which was only relaxed in the previous decade. Those that were there were largely first generation and didn't have Australian accents, unlike Noelene, Dennis and the others.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/08/2022 11:15

yes, noelene is being portrayed as the only english speaker in her family, or the best at least.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/08/2022 11:41

The explosion, I said I'd tell you my experience.

I was working in the ED (Emergency Department) at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, which was about a mile from Russell Street Police HQ. I was on an early shift and was on my lunch break in the staff canteen when we heard the most almighty explosion. We knew it was something big, left our lunches and ran back to work. It wasn't long before the ED filled up with dazed and deafened police officers.

We also received poor Angela Taylor, the 20 year old policewoman who was walking past the car when the bomb went off. It was the first time I'd ever seen severe blast injuries. She had extensive burns and I remember most of her clothing had been blown off. She died in our ICU around three weeks later. (The TV version said she'd been taken to St Vincent's hospital, which was nearer the site and did receive many casualties, but not Angela).

We were also all worried that terrorism had come to Australia, in fact it turned out that it was a gang of criminals with a grudge against the police.

it was one of those shifts that stick in your mind.

I was waiting for it Blondes. The chemistry is there. Unfortunately it's likely to turn into an AIDS story if they get it on isn't it?

JaneJeffer · 01/08/2022 12:38

It must have been so shocking Bore I watched a bit about it on YouTube because I don't remember it at all. I wonder if it got much coverage this side of the globe. Apparently she had tossed a coin with her colleague to see whose turn it was to go across the road to get lunch and ended up right beside the car Sad

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/08/2022 13:37

It was shocking, Jane. It would have been small beer over here though, with all the IRA bombings. Thought I'd left all that behind me when I moved there.

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/08/2022 13:42

This series is bringing back so many memories. The music, locations, intercutting of real news footage of the time.

The following year I was involved in caring for some of the victims of the Hoddle Street Massacre. I'm wondering if that will be covered in the second series.

JustDanceAddict · 01/08/2022 14:08

@BoreOfWhabylon - thanks for telling us your experience. Poor Angela 😞 I don’t remember it but I was only a teen in the UK at the time - obv I remember Challenger and Chernobyl happening, weirdly I have more vivid memories of the Challenger news breaking.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/08/2022 15:57

Oh wow @BoreOfWhabylon thanks for sharing your experience

Oh definitely Blondes! He's in denial. Before he got with Helen his colleagues presumed he was gay.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/08/2022 16:41

poor Helen

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/08/2022 00:02

I'd never heard of the bombing or certainly didn't remember it, had to google after I'd watched.

butterpuffed · 03/08/2022 17:21

Just watched episode 4 , it's excellent, I think it deserved to be on BBC1 as it's a bit hidden away on 2.

Thanks for the link @BoreOfWhabylon , didn't read the whole thing as so long but glad to see they found who organised the bombing.
