It was one of my favourite Wyndham books, I've watched the first 2 episodes and it seems good so far

OP posts:

Just finished… I enjoyed it.

Housewife2010 · 07/06/2022 23:05

I've just watched the first episode and found it very slow. It doesn't seem a patch on the excellent 1960 film. I don't have Sky but was sent an offer to get Now Entertainment for £1 a month for 2 months so signed up to watch this.

Oysterbabe · 07/06/2022 23:52

I'm on episode 5 and really enjoying it. One of my favourite books too.

Ellenanora7 · 08/06/2022 00:16

I quite liked it, the first one is a bit slow but glad I stuck with it.

I have a question but don't want to put up a spoiler for those that haven't watched so I'll be back when everyone is caught up if that's ok 😊

MidwichCuckoo · 08/06/2022 10:33

I've got a couple of questions too. I was thinking of writing SPOILER ALERT at the top of the post so people could scroll past it

JemimaHumdrum · 08/06/2022 13:50

I’ve got questions too 😁

TeenPlusCat · 08/06/2022 14:15

I'm happy to answer questions by PM based on the book only, as I haven't seen the series.

JemimaHumdrum · 08/06/2022 15:10

Funnily enough I didn’t have questions when I read the book. I think it’s just the way they’ve tried to adapt it to this series.

TeenPlusCat · 08/06/2022 15:12

Jemima How 'true' is it to the book?

JemimaHumdrum · 08/06/2022 16:12

From what I can remember of the book, it’s fairly similar with a modern twist. Dr Zeleby being a woman and obviously the DC don’t all look the same with the blonde hair/blue eyes/grey skin bit. Oh and the ending is slightly different albeit the same outcome 😉

Housewife2010 · 08/06/2022 21:14

I've just watched the second episode. After a very slow first episode, it has definitely perked up.

Oysterbabe · 09/06/2022 19:47

I've finished it now. It's pretty true to the book. A modernisation.
Overall I liked it.

Reesewithafork · 11/06/2022 20:19

I didn’t love it. It felt very disjointed to me and I didn’t find many of the characters particularly likeable

Violetparis · 11/06/2022 20:26

I really enjoyed it, the child actors were good too.

Fedupsotired · 14/06/2022 06:39

We've one more to watch. Have loved it!

ArtVandalay · 14/06/2022 21:24

It's a bit dull and slow, but we are soldiering on 😐

Why have most of the kids got such terrible hair? It's very distracting.

We don't have Sky so i can't watch it.
How faithful is it being to the books? I've only seen the trailers so only noticed the children aren't all blonde with golden eyes, but I suspect that would have been very hard to cast. Not too worried about that, but nice to know if it is faithful to the book, just using it as a jump off point, or a dispiriting mix of the two.

How can the children not be identical! That was the whole point of the book, that because they were identical physically and emotionally they thought and learned exponentially as a hive mind both collectively and along gender lines , so were aware of the other children etc. Huge John Wyndham fan , haven’t got Sky so just having a small annoyed rant at production companies wrecking classic stories. Huh. That’s it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/06/2022 16:30

I read the book after watching it and thought it was a good modern adaptation. I think the children in the show had much more individuality in terms of personality as well as not looking the same, and they are also more integrated into the community.

Clawdy · 16/06/2022 23:21

I like it so far, but needed subtitles .

SammyScrounge · 17/06/2022 01:29

Painfully slow most of the time. And the children aren't scary enough.

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 17/06/2022 15:08

I don't know, those wigs were pretty scary 😆

Housewife2010 · 19/06/2022 07:18

For people who don't have Sky, you can still watch this. It's also on Now Entertainment which you can subscribe to on a month by month basis. I got an introductory offer of £1 a month for two months so subscribed to watch this. -My husband is taking advantage of my £1 extravagance to watch Game of Thrones every night!

CounsellorTroi · 20/06/2022 10:44

We don’t have Sky as such but have Sky Max in our Virgin package.

I quite enjoyed it. I suppose they couldn’t have them all blond and golden eyed because of the need to reflect racial diversity. But it would have been even more creepy if the non white couples had given birth to blond golden eyed babies. I thought Sam West was superb in this but I may be a bit biased. I think he would make a great Master in Dr Who.

I love John Wyndham. Wish they would make film/TV versions of The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids or Web (not for arachnophobes) instead of remaking The Day Of The Triffids all the time.

Goldencarp · 20/06/2022 23:28

Binged it a couple of weeks back,. I enjoyed it.
