Stranger Things S4 - wtf!

Just watched E1 of S4.

Is it just me or has the horror really amped up?
I thought S1 was pretty dark and played on my mind a lot - but then it seemed to calm down a lot. I didn't find S2 and S3 scary at all. But wow, that was something else. I didn't want to sleep for a couple of weeks anyway...

We finished It tonight - brilliant final episode & really starting to bring all the threads in.
We're planning to watch from S1 right through before July so everything is fresh in our minds.

WobblyLondoner · 06/06/2022 23:40

Ditto, just finished this set and can't wait until July. Highly impressive - the scenes with El were just astonishing, trying to work out how they managed to do this given the different ages of El in the current day and flashbacks.

That scene when the two parties are cycling to the trailer - Shock

I love it, only started S1 on Thursday and have now seen it all! Can't wait for part 2 of S4. I don't mind the horror, I was desensitised watching horror films with my grandmother in bed as a small child (from about 5). It is objectively more gory and scary though if you are sensitive to horror.

Was anyone else a bit confused about Jamie Campbell Bower's character. I don't mean plotwise but when I suspend my disbelief enough to accept Charlie Heaton, Joseph Quinn and Natalie Dyer as high schoolers, my brain then has trouble accepting their obvious peer, Bower, as a man in his 30s.

Well, Jamie Campbell Bower is a few years older than them; but I think his androgynous look & receding hairlines make him look older. He's 34 irl; the others are in their mid-to-late 20s - but they do look younger than that, so playing 18yo isn't too much of a stretch.

Wanderingowl · 07/06/2022 21:38

Dyer and Heaton are both late 20s and look much, much older than they are in the latest series. Especially Heaton. I'd guess they were both 40ish if I just saw photos of them.

Mykittensmittens · 07/06/2022 23:03

@WobblyLondoner it was two different people. Young El in series 4 is a doppelgänger actress called Martine-something - it was very well done.

I noticed so many little nods to the Duffer Bros influences - some were really subtle. Lots of nods to Nightmare on Elm Street - not just using Robert England but the whole ‘he’ll get you if you fall asleep’ type of thing with Max being unable to be left alone. Nod to Halloween (the Gravestone names), silence of the lambs, and loads of Spielberg and Stephen King - the roller rink was really so like Carrie when they threw blood on her and stood and laughed.

I might watch it again just to see more!

Episode 6… when did Steve get so HOT?! 🥵🥵🥵

WobblyLondoner · 08/06/2022 08:29

@Mykittensmittens Ah thank you. But I think that must only relate to the very young El, the one you see with the blood round her eyes? I was thinking more of the flashbacks to (for eg) her helping Bower escape - that was the same actress who plays El now wasn't it? All very clever. I love the way they play around with the sizes of the characters in the lab too.

The other nod to a film for me was Clockwork Orange - Bower reminds me of the Malcolm M character in that, and the blood round the eyes look is reminiscent too.

Must STEP AWAY now! Can't wait for the final episodes.

I totally agree!!!

APurpleSquirrel · 08/06/2022 16:09

We started series 1 again last night (watched eps 1 & 2) - so we're fully updated for the last two eps of S4. They're all so young! & poor Barb 😭

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 08/06/2022 17:05

Loving the new series, roll on July! Oh and Steve as always been hot well after he stopped being an arse 😂

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 08/06/2022 17:42

I absolutely adored every minute. What a treat. Can't wait till July.

And as a fan of Rick and Morty, I loved seeing Rick Sanchez on the list of Ricks at the video store - anyone else spot that? Grin

RobinHobb · 08/06/2022 22:59

That scene with max at the end of ep4...

That was intense. I don't think I'll sleep!

The horror is much much more intense!

RobinHobb · 08/06/2022 22:59

Work tomorrow so sending myself to sleep. If I can. It’s fantastic!!

DeusInAbsentia · 09/06/2022 12:19

Must admit this season did sneak into my dreams a lot more than the previous ones. It was all the bone snapping I think.

I have theories for part 2, but unsure if we're doing spoilers in this one so wont post.

As an aside. Eddie Munson. I mean. He was the guy I dated back in the day, long haired, cute, geeky, metal dude that smelled of leather and patchouli. I came over all funny when he appeared on screen 😳

Apparently they used a younger actress and cgi to make it look like a younger El, very cleverly done

woolwinder · 12/06/2022 09:42

Just watched the first ep of season 4. I have to say, it's a bit relentlessly American for me, and the children I remember from earlier now seem to be hulking great teenagers, and they seem to have studied acting at the School of Gurning. Still, DP wants to carry on. There's something a bit childish about it all.

WobblyLondoner · 22/06/2022 19:52

Trailer out for the final episodes! The Kate Bush love in continues 👏👏👏

DeusInAbsentia · 22/06/2022 22:08

If anyone wants to properly fangirlnit looks like London film and comic con in July have a few of the cast, namely David Harbour, Robert Englund and Joseph Quinn.

GrandTheftWalrus · 24/06/2022 00:16

Epic trailer! I had thought that Robert englund was gonna be vecna. Didn't see that coming that basically 11 made him.
