On Sky Atlantic.

Odd choice, it's already been made into a film so strange to do a series. Seems to be a bit of theme as Sky dramatised The Staircase too recently.

Anyway, I always thought the book was bordering on weird with a bloke hanging around with a small child waiting until she was old enough to marry him. Film was weird too, now the new drama is really weird, or is it just me?

Anyone else seen it?

I really liked the book but read it many years ago.
Didn't watch the film as heard it was rubbish but I'm keen to watch the series as I really like Rose Leslie.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/05/2022 18:41

It's all a bit 'naked and how hot is Henry.'

I did enjoy the book but there were parts I just found bizarre but the series is ...well ,come back and tell me what you think when you've seen it.

Liked the book, the film bombed at box office and with critics, might give it a try!

LanaGardner · 16/05/2022 19:51

I liked the film, the Aussie actor had a good otherworldly feel to his character but then I'm a sucker for not watching films that are overhyped and watching the panned ones.
But yeah the whole turning up when she was a child and naked the first time..just no.

clumperoo · 16/05/2022 20:31

I loved the book and have enjoyed episode one

Its more true to the book than the film and not easy to compact the story in 90 mins

He doesn't hang around a child waiting for her
To groe ip. They're already married to each
Other when he unwillingly travels back in time
To her childhood home. He has to befriend her or hang around naked in woods for hours or days

clumperoo · 16/05/2022 20:35

Its Gwen from Downton and Kamul Pamuk

KillingMeDeftly · 16/05/2022 22:41

Ah Mr Pamuk. Last seen in the region of Lady Mary's deadly nethers.

I enjoyed the first episode. Little bit creepy how she basically built her life and formed her personality around him though. The two leads put in strong performances.

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 17/05/2022 21:42

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor .it is weird but I like that, I'm suspending the usual social normities, it's basically science fiction lite.
And I can live with hot Henry 😄 although he isn't really my cup of tea.
I thought that both Clare and Henry were excellent and I'm keen to watch the next one. I can't actually remember a lot of the book.
Good soundtrack also.

leotardrock · 17/05/2022 22:50

I absolutely loved the book so will check this out thank you!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 17/05/2022 22:58

I loved the book and I think Rose Leslie is fab so I'll give it a go. I've just finished Sanditon so will happily watch Theo James in something else.

BuanoKubiamVej · 17/05/2022 23:05

I love the book but thought the film was a bit meh. Didn't do anything, other than act out an abbreviated and not massively engaging quick summary of the main plot points of the book. I don't see any point to putting a book on screen without doing something to explore the hidden depths. It's difficult to do this in a film, so a series might have the potential to be a little more interesting.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/05/2022 23:05

The book was far too much like grooming for me to want to watch a film/series based on it.

There is actually a reference to grooming in the first episode which was meant to make it clear he wasn't grooming her 🤢

Theo James is much too conventionally handsome / ‘built’ to play Henry!

rosegoldwatcher · 18/05/2022 19:50

Loved the book.
Did not like the film.
I don't have Sky Atlantic.
Wah!!!!

KillingMeDeftly · 24/05/2022 07:21

Last night's episode was very sad, especially with little Henry and his mum.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/05/2022 18:36

I've given up, I got about ten mins into the second episode and just can't get into it. He's so wrong as Henry and she's not much better. Oh well, I'm glad others are enjoying it 😊

Me neither. I just can't care enough about his character. And the wife just putting up.with it. I read the book years ago and loved it. Maybe if I read it again now i wouldn't like it so much.

KillingMeDeftly · 13/06/2022 20:31

Anyone still watching? How many episodes are there?

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 13/06/2022 20:45

I’m enjoying it strangely. Couldn’t stand the movie but don’t mind the series.

Sunnytwobridges · 13/06/2022 20:58

I loved the book and liked the movie. The series would be great but I don't like the actor playing Claire. And I don't feel like her and Henry have much chemistry together.

It’s the other way around. He’s hanging out with his wife’s younger self, trying not to freak her out until he can get back to his actual wife. Although of course it throws up some erm interesting interactions.

At least that’s the way the book read. I haven’t seen the film.

Following to see if anyone recommends the series.

KillingMeDeftly · 14/06/2022 09:15

Hmm apparently next week's episode is the last. Seems like they've still got a lot of the book to get through though.

JaneIsInsane · 14/06/2022 09:26

I haven’t watched this yet. I loved the book but the firm was truly awful. In the book, the death of Henry’s mother in the car is very unexpected and jolting. It’s also woven into the story beautifully. The film starts with this scene which I thought ruined that whole strand of fragility and helplessness of his situation.

ahunf · 16/06/2022 22:10

I really wanted to watch it but I don't like the main actors.
