I can't see another thread.
I've watched 3 episodes, very enjoyable, quite slow, love the music.

Bored to tears so far

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2022 17:21

I’ve watched the lot. Not that enamoured I’m afraid.

Madeintowerhamlets · 16/05/2022 18:17

It is very slow. I think the main guy is wrong for the part. He’s with Taylor Swift in real life!

Ulysses · 16/05/2022 18:23

I read the book and didn’t think it was nearly as good as Normal People and a few episodes in, the TV adaptation hasn’t improved upon it. I think the acting is fine but it’s quite forgettable as a story. None of the characters are particularly likeable.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2022 18:37

I didn't find the two main characters in Normal People very likeable, not sure that's a Sally Rooney 'thing'. The whole series has a very similar feel to NP. From Trinity college, to going abroad for no apparent reason, dysfunctional families and on occasion I thought Frances was pure Marianne.

Joe Alwyn was fine I thought, but I've read reviews saying his accent is awful and he's not old enough or something.

CTPT · 16/05/2022 18:42

Is Joe Alwyn supposed to have an Irish accent in it? It sounds like it, but it's a bit of an odd accent. I've not heard him speak normally though.

I've watched about half and I'm enjoying it, loved Normal People, it definitely has lots of similarities and I'm pleased it has the same director.

Rodedooda · 16/05/2022 21:41

I really what I've seen so far. God her characters are so frustrating - just communicate!! But to be fair I was exactly the same at 21.

I also like how it shows mh issues as part of everyday life rather than it being AN ISSUE.

I much much prefer this sort of thing over the latest marvel blockbuster or whatever, but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

EachandEveryone · 16/05/2022 22:02

I’m looking forward to watching it. I never cared for the book though tbh, they are so pretentious.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2022 22:04

The book is not exactly a page turner, and I'm in the minority but Sally Rooney's lack of speech marks winds me up.

Madeintowerhamlets · 16/05/2022 23:31

I’m enjoying it despite the slowness. Joe Alwyne is growing on me. I think he’s definitely meant to be Irish but his accent does slip a bit. I agree that Sally Rooney’s characters don’t tend to be likeable. They are always awkward though!

DorritLittle · 16/05/2022 23:37

Me too. I found the characters in the book really insufferable but will watch it of course.

Jewel1968 · 16/05/2022 23:41

It kinda washes over you when you are tired. It's a very visual experience. Just what I need when too tired to focus.

Spaghetti0 · 16/05/2022 23:42

I’m 7 episodes In and quite enjoying it.
I find it rather intriguing.
The awkwardness and painful-ness speaks to me of the difficulties of communication and being youngS
It also captures some of the different types of relationships and the bonds between people well. Those we are tied to, depend on, lust over etc

DiscoBadgers · 17/05/2022 06:33

I lasted 3 episodes and I had to give up. It was so dull, and the characters were painfully boring.

Fdora · 17/05/2022 06:42

I've just finished the whole thing and loved it. Yes the characters aren't very likeable but think they're well fleshed out believable characters.

The sound track is absolutely fab!!

Oh and really like how they filmed the sex scenes (same with Normal People) erotic but beautifully done

Enjoyallthewine · 17/05/2022 09:18

I’m half way through the series, love it.

Papyrus · 17/05/2022 12:20

I've seen several criticisms that Joe Alwyn is too young for the role. But he's 31 and Nick is 32 in the book, so pretty much bang on.

SpoonOnTheMoon · 17/05/2022 17:59

Out of curiosity, where is Frances from originally? When she went home I couldn't read the sign at the train station but it might have said Ballinasloe?

One minor quibble is the use of tiny text messages, I have to pause it and walk up to my 40" screen to read the message!

I'm three episodes in and finding it really slow. I'm hoping things get more interesting once they're abroad. I can't see why Nick would be interested in Frances - she has the personality of a dishcloth. He married Melissa, presumably because he had a great relationship with her, and she's much more interesting.
Also, we had the period pain featured - great. Something so ordinary yet never normally shown. So why don't we get a conversation about contraception? It's tiresome that women are portrayed as always being available to have sex and there's never that discussion beforehand.

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2022 20:02

Manage your expectations...

sessell · 17/05/2022 23:12

Just finished it... Why did I bother. All the characters were awful people, pretentious, self-centred and boring. Nothing much happened. No idea what the ending was about.

The small text messages really pissed me off. The whole thing pissed me off tbh.

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2022 23:30

Everything seemed to be grey the whole time. Nothing had any real colour. Even on the holiday. Probably massively significant, but it was all lost on me.

I watched on my laptop with headphones and managed to keep up with the constant text reading requirement, not sure I'd have managed on the TV.

There were things I didn't understand too, much like NP but a bit early for that re spoilers etc.

Meh2020 · 18/05/2022 00:13

I really didn’t get the ending.
