Who's going to get the last quarter final place?

I've just seen the news about Wimbledon Raahh although* *I haven't seen the actual statement yet. I think it's a shame to penalise the majority for the sake of the few players that are banned. The only upside is that Djok loses 2000 points and the No1 spot! Don't understand why the ATP have stripped Wimbledon of the ranking points but not the LTA tournaments?Confused I'm guessing the WTA will follow suit?

Raahh · 20/05/2022 20:18

kazza I agree- I never really understood why Wimbledon decided to go against everyone else in the first place. The rankings thing is complicated , because what they could have done was just freeze the affected banned players points. But decided against that. Djok losing out is a bonus.

The WTA said a few weeks back that they disagreed with the sanctions, so I'm not sure what they will do.

I don't really get it, but the LTA are saying that they are not stripping other tournaments of points (like Queens or Halle) because Wimbledon is a big enough event to still be able to attract players who will go regardless of whether ranking points are on offer. I think the money is still on offer. So I'm sure that helps!

Sylfia · 21/05/2022 13:04

The WTA also stripped points, before ATP reached a decision.

I think they've got it right. Players will still compete, for the prize money, for the chance to win, and for the exposure - the tournament will still be a big deal and corporate sponsors will want their people there.

So it won't sabotage the tournament and it isn't meant to. It just means that Russian and Belarusian players won't be disadvantaged in ATP and WTA tournaments for the rest of the year, since ranking points affect that.

Leaving ranking points for the other British tournaments, because there'll be other opportunities to earn points at the same time was a fair and gracious decision. Leaving them for Wimbledon would have undermined the principle that ATP and WTA represent players and endorse only tournaments that treat them equally.

Sylfia · 21/05/2022 13:09

And money is certainly still on offer - ATP and WTA don't pay out for the prizes. They award the ranking points.

One of the reasons women's tennis is streets ahead of most women's sports for publicity and prize money is because the players banded together to protect common interests, including negotiations with slams and other tournaments. Tennis governing bodies aren't perfect but I like to see them protect their players when they do.

Yes but I still don't agree with their decision to not let the Russians and Belarusians play!

In other tennis news, my favourite Norwegian, Casper Ruud Grinin through to the final in Geneva, which is nice.
Cameron Norrie is through to the Lyon final. No idea if he's still wearing his snazzy shorts Grin

Casper and Cameron have both won, well done to them.

Looking forward to tomorrow. I like tournaments that start on Sundays! Grin

Are all of the matches on Eurosport?

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/05/2022 18:24

I'm not sure what the schedule will be like, usually with RG there is very little choice of match, so there will be 1 shown on euosport 1 and another shown on 2. I don't know if it's one of those cases where if you pay extra for the Eurosport thingy on Prime, you get more coverage,( like the Olympics).
. RG has always been limited in what we get to to see, annoyingly.

Raahh · 21/05/2022 18:30

Discovery plus-that was it.
I think I still have it on the normal eurosport channels, but Discovery + probably shows more courts. Maybe

JaneJeffer · 21/05/2022 18:49

I don't have that. Will have to make do with whatever Eurosport is showing. I've gotten used to being spoilt for choice!

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/05/2022 18:53

Jane me too. It was frustrating when the Olympics was on, because Discovery had all the good stuff.
I complain about Prime, but at least we get a choice of matches.
I have only every been able to watch whatever ITV4 and Eurosport were showing anyway- and most of the time, they were the same thing (I preferred the coverage on ITV- even though they probably got the same pictures - though not always the commentary Grin).

Fizzywinegum · 22/05/2022 09:34

I’ve just been reading about the points issue at Wimbledon - some of the lower ranked players will lose out because they can’t earn any points at Wimbledon - I suppose it could mean the difference between automatic entry to tournaments or having to qualify etc. I also saw that Nadine Dorries has been involved - say no more!

Benoit Paire’s response was “DECISION STUPIDE!!!” Grin

I’m looking forward to RG - also wish it was on Prime - Eurosport always seem to show the matches I don’t want to watch!

Rafa seems to have been in good form at his press conferences - hopefully his foot will be OK - I think he’s playing tomorrow against Tash man? Grin

Raahh · 22/05/2022 10:09

Fizz he is playing tache man Grin

The ranking thing will affect many players, who were already affected by the pandemic, and not being able to play tournaments then- and they rely on the big tournaments to provide a points boost.

I'm already frustrated, because there is a Thiem match on Simonne Mathieu- but they are obviously only showing the two women's matches on PC and SL.

And even after a few years, I miss the green seats on Philippe Chatrier.

There are hardly any specatators for the Jabeur match Sad

Raahh · 22/05/2022 10:11

Benoit Grin

Raahh · 22/05/2022 11:55

Girgor had a very straight forward won.
Unfortunately, things don't seem to be going too well for Domi, who lost the first 2 sets in his match.
It's looking quite breezy in Paris today.

Raahh · 22/05/2022 12:18

Rain!!

Raahh · 22/05/2022 12:19

And Domi is out Sad
Very sad. How things have turned around in the last 2-3 years.
