Real life story

John a former teacher and prison officer fakes his own death in 2002 via a canoe - with the help of Ann his wife to claim Life insurance and avoid bankruptcy

It is based on an unpublished manuscript by reporter David , he was the first one to find and interview ann after a boot of the couple was seen 5yrs later in 2007

Ann knew but not the sons who believes their dad was dead

I like Eddie Marsan too! Interesting actor and he was good in ' happy go lucky '.
I love Mike Leigh films ( and he was also in sightseers too )
He is quirky

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2022 21:56

Interconnected doors, like having a suite in a posh hotel.

Bunnybingesoneggs · 17/04/2022 21:57

Isn't even filmed in Seaton Carew!!
The house is on my street and the filming is The Headland a couple of miles away.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/04/2022 21:57

@HardRockOwl

It's also not being filmed at Seaton Carew and he gets out the car at Middlesbrough station - but I've only spotted this as I'm from there!
I've just said that to DH. My granny lived in West Hartlepool and we used to stay there (lived down South) and go to Seaton Carew on holidays. It was the 60s and a thriving sea side resort then but I'm sure I remember a really sandy beach. Visited about 10 years ago and it had gone badly down hill.
Pebbledashery · 17/04/2022 22:00

They didn't need to film that bit!

Leftbutcameback · 17/04/2022 22:04

Great story, really good cast, only ITV could make it this poor (it's the script I think, plus the ads). Let's hope it gets better.

Very disappointing.
Flat and boringly predictable.
Won't be bothering with the other 3 episodes.

Bunnybingesoneggs · 17/04/2022 22:22

Seaton had a great each these days!!

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2022 22:25

Monica Dolan is from Middlesbrough andI actually think her accent is right. I thought his was awful, a bit like 'Brenda Blethyn does Geordie'.

I liked the programme well enough though. Didn't find it slow.

HardRockOwl · 17/04/2022 22:28

I thought it was really boring. Whoever handled that script needs firing.

Yes I heard it was filmed on the headland. I work in Hartlepool and live in the village where they're from. Accents aren't good are they? Hartlepool is a difficult one but they may be more colliery? I haven't watched yet just seen clips. I think the house is on the front at seaton? I'll probably be able to tell which one next time I go as there'll be tourists Grin
Juniper68 · 17/04/2022 22:33

@CaptainMyCaptain you'd probably be pleasantly surprised now. It's lovely there.

southeastdweller · 17/04/2022 22:34

@Maddiemoosmum0203

It’s on player the next two episodes not the last of anyone wants to watch them
They’re not there yet unless you can see something different.
Justmuddlingalong · 17/04/2022 22:39

Not going to bother with the other episodes. I found it veeeery slow and drawn out.

MabelMoo23 · 17/04/2022 22:44

I remember this happening! Although actually it may be because I remember him getting caught more clearly

I thought it was ok - but yes he is definitely a man who had ideas well above his station

I do wonder though how the sons feel about this dramatisation though

VivienneDelacroix · 17/04/2022 22:46

Turned off after 30 minutes. Dreadfully done.

Why did the police search the house after finding the canoe? Looking in the toilets and everything - it's as though they suspected something was going on!

I wasn't wrong then! In the opening scene I said "that's the headland!"
WTF475878237NC · 17/04/2022 23:09

Quite a few spoilers in this thread if people aren't familiar with the story at all.

I enjoyed the slow pace. Just what we need at the moment. Anne seemed very weak and couldn't believe she put her husband's pride above the children's feelings.

PickAChew · 17/04/2022 23:12

Definitely not colliery. DH is from Peterlee, mining family, and said they wouldn't say 6 months, they'd say 6 month.

TheChosenTwo · 17/04/2022 23:20

Wow, we thought the acting was absolutely dire, dh laughed through most of it! It was quite comical how bad it was Shock
The beach looked lovely.
He didn’t seem to be acting very covertly when she picked him up on the night he disappeared - you’d at least lie down on the back seats surely!
And I didn’t get why they were searching the toilets etc either once they’d located his canoe, as though they were looking for evidence he’d been there without just asking her first.

Juniper68 · 18/04/2022 00:43

I know there is a lot wrong with the accent from what I have heard. But it's more from that way. Definitely not pools.
LetitiaLeghorn · 18/04/2022 00:46

@FiveNineFive

My ex worked with one of their sons. It really damaged him
Did he ever forgive them? It's impossible to imagine how I'd feel if my dad had done this.
