Wednesday 27th April, 9pm, BBC 1.

I'll be away for weeks 2&3 which is unfortunate.

Esme designed (stage?) Outfits for Cher

SoupDragon · 02/06/2022 08:25

They pointed out the flaws with the sleeves and skirt on Brogan's Bowie dress.

Piggywaspushed · 02/06/2022 09:49

I have just caught up having missed the last 15 minutes. I was disappointed by ow un Bowie everything was to be honest. Annie's coat dress was very 80s but I didn't get Bowie - more Duran Duran cover girl.

Man Yee's jacket was awful side on , so unflattering with the skirt. I am not sure what she should have put it with an Patrick didn't have a suggestion other than not the skirt. Part of the problem was the black boots.

I actually liked Angie's coat jacket. Again not very Bowie - but more so than many others. Christians was the show stopper glam era item to me.

LouisCatorze · 02/06/2022 11:40

@Piggywaspushed I totally get you! I'm starting to think that Christian is going to be 'always the bridesmaid and never the bride'. The two that came top in the Bowie challenge were both less rockstar than high society wedding 'quirky' to my mind.

LouisCatorze · 02/06/2022 11:42

Sorry, Cristian.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/06/2022 13:26

ManYee's outfit didn't come out as well as I expected from the drawing, I think cigarette pants might have been a better choice to set off the jacket. (I'm not sure that Bowie ever wore cigarette pants, but he definitely never wore a tulle skirt either.) Did they say it wasn't 'Bowie-like' enough? I remember them saying it a couple of times but I can't remember who to. I could definitely have imagined him wearing a jacket like that. I found a picture of him wearing a suit with a similar vibe from the mid-90s.

I thought that Cristian's outfit was the closest to the brief, it was a shame about the fit across the bum. Sewing those curved bits must have been really difficult, the colours were lovely.

Debra's outfit was pretty close to the brief too, but it reminded me more of Maribou Barbie. I think a different colour might have been more Bowie.

Sewing Bee is coming back!
LouisCatorze · 02/06/2022 14:27

Do you think there's a clear front runner now? It seems to me that they're all capable of flashes of genius but most have had their share of disasters too, sometimes in the same episode?

DoubleGauze · 02/06/2022 15:21

I liked ManYee's jacket , I felt that she should possibly have made a bodycon dress in yellow to show that gender juxtaposition she was referring to. The outfit was just too 'big' with a lack of balance. That said , I bet it's hard to know how something will look until you make it in full. She has fab ideas and gets so much work done in the time allowed.

They're all so good. I'm sticking with Annie , Cristian and Debra as front runners though. I did think Marni would be up there with them , but she just had a bad week last time.

LouisCatorze · 02/06/2022 18:04

No-one seemed inspired by Bowie's 'Thin White Duke' (his best, IMO) look.

longtompot · 02/06/2022 18:18

I think of Angie had made her coat dress with the fabric Debra used, the dark brocade, then I think Man Yee would have been the one to go.
I think if Man Yee had done a pair of trousers to go with the jacket which were very fitted at the waist and then wide legged or even pencil legged in the yellow they probably would have gone better with the jacket.
I suspect Cristian got away with the raw edges on his parka as they were all unlined. My dd thought Brogans pockets and waist cord channel didn't quite line up, but they didn't show it for long enough, or again, for me to see, funnily enough. I think she is very talented, and it was good to see her flummoxed by a challenge as it shows she has a real talent, but I wonder if she is found annoying in person?

Jellykat · 02/06/2022 19:28

I watched last night but couldnt join you as was sewing!
Brogans Parka pockets werent symmetrical, youre DD was spot on longtompot!
I thought Cristian did a fantastic job sewing that lycra.. ok the arse was bad, but he deserved more credit i thought.

ValerieCupcake · 02/06/2022 22:39

TheMooch · 01/06/2022 23:00

I think it was Angela's week to go though her Bowie outfit looked striking.

Patrick and Esme's adulation of Brogen were OTT this week (IMO), her transformation outfit was dull stage wear and her Bowie outfit needed better sleeves to achieve what she said.

I'm getting sick of Squeak-a-Mouse Brogan being bigged up. Cristian is equally as good and doesn't get the credit.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/06/2022 08:14

I don't suppose she can help her voice.

LouisCatorze · 03/06/2022 08:56

@ValerieCupcake glad to see I'm not the only Cristian fan! An Annie, Debra and Cristian final would work for me.

Snufkinhastherightidea · 03/06/2022 09:24

I’ve been watching this and really enjoying it as always but I’m finding the mumsnet companion thread quite nasty this year - All the criticism of Brogan’s voice is the reason I hold back on many opportunities in life - I have a really high voice and people take the piss a lot but what can I do? It means that I’ve avoided job interviews/ public speaking/ speaking up at work. People can’t help their voice as Captain said, it’s like taking the piss because of the colour of their eyes or skin.

Innocenta · 03/06/2022 09:57

Finally caught up! Not the most fun week for me as I really dislike Bowie. I was sad to see Angela go.

I do agree with @Snufkinhastherightidea that mocking Brogan's voice is nasty.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2022 09:57

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/06/2022 08:14

I don't suppose she can help her voice.

Obviously she should have put on an "acceptable" voice purely for the show.

I agree that being nasty about things people can't help is unacceptable.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 03/06/2022 11:05

Just caught up and missed any spoilers.

I did think Angela would be next to go, I think it could be Man Yee next but they are all such a brilliant standard. I'd have said Cristian next but he doesn't seem to get much air time so I'm thinking he might go all the way.

ValerieCupcake · 03/06/2022 11:42

Nobody suggested that. Don't be silly. I can't help what I find irritating any more than Brogan can help her voice. Every single person in the world finds something annoying about at least one other person. Does that make them nasty? Or are you only nasty if you voice that opinion? It's OK, then, to be "nasty" so long as you don't tell anyone that something grates on you? We're all nasty then aren't we in real life but keeping it to ourselves. As a viewer, it irritates me. I expect now the kneejerk "you have an off button/change the channel"

Piggywaspushed · 03/06/2022 11:47

Anyone who comes from Scotland recognises that as a particular regional accent, slightly mangled by years in England. Will admit it's an accent some Glaswegians despise, so used are we to being told our accents are unacceptable. It's not at all an affectation, though.

Innocenta · 03/06/2022 12:08

@ValerieCupcake Of course you can't help if you're irritated by someone's voice, but being irritated and calling her a nasty name aren't quite the same thing.

Sewannoying · 03/06/2022 12:42

I really liked the style of Angela’s made to measure, but it was totally the wrong fabric choice and I agreed with the judge’s decision. However, I felt Debra should have won GOTW. Loved the sophisticated twist to her Bowie inspired outfit.

Incidentally, currently watching Labyrinth again and OMG Bowie is hot. Only about 15 minutes away from the infamous end scene…

ValerieCupcake · 03/06/2022 13:10

You know what you're right, I should have known better as someone bullied and called names at school. I don't dislike Brogan or her sewing or anything like that. Let's get back to the stitching! 🧵 🪡

Snufkinhastherightidea · 03/06/2022 13:20

Yes let’s @ValerieCupcake 😃 It is such a lovely programme. Even though I can’t sew I find it so comforting for some reason and such a friendly competition. Just really relaxing tv for me.
