Wednesday 27th April, 9pm, BBC 1.

I'll be away for weeks 2&3 which is unfortunate.

I suppose Esme ought to know how to pronounce it.Hmmm...

Surely it's smocking ??

Smocking is fancier isn't it? Rather then just the straight lines of shirring.

Notthesportytype · 11/05/2022 21:12

They use shirring elastic to make the gathers. Smocking is similar but with normal thread.

RhannionKPSS · 11/05/2022 21:13

I thought it was called smocking?

Not necessarily, Mary Berry pronounces Baklava wrong! Grin

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2022 21:16

I am struggling to tell the two nice young men apart until they speak.

dillite · 11/05/2022 21:18

Richie isn't very good, is he? Always lacking / wonky/ uneven

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/05/2022 21:19

Smocking involves embroidering over gathers. It's not the same.

malyessarah7 · 11/05/2022 21:19

Thing is, I reckon he probably could sew under the right conditions. I started sewing in lock down but I am slow AF. I take an hour and a half to choose my bloody fabric.

I get that they have a choice to make re accomplished sewists and compelling TV but I just don't see the harm in giving contestants more time. I don't want to see rushed, pathetic attempts.

The Heller Approach

SoupDragon · 11/05/2022 21:19

Oh dear, Steve,

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/05/2022 21:20

I've spell it shirring but I say shearing.

smilesy · 11/05/2022 21:20

Oh poor Steve. Bless him!

EverybodysALebowski · 11/05/2022 21:21

Yeah I think Richie is probably better with more time. Nice vest though - wonder if he knitted it?

dillite · 11/05/2022 21:22

He would probably do better in menswear.

Halsall · 11/05/2022 21:22

Thank god everyone else agrees with me that it is NOT 'SHEARING'!!!!

Josie and Norah, the lovely ladies who ran the haberdashery shop where I had a Saturday job, and who had approximately 100 years of sewing experience between them, would have had an absolute fit listening to this. We sold a lot of shirring elastic and we knew how to pronounce it <gavel>

Maireas · 11/05/2022 21:22

So Brogan won - no surprise. I suspect she runs one of them up every week.

Wolfcub · 11/05/2022 21:23

I can't imagine that hammock fabric would be comfortable to wear

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2022 21:23

Macrame gives me the heebie jeebies.

It could be used for a coat though. Those are rarely comfortable.

smilesy · 11/05/2022 21:25

Hammock wear would be very itchy

dillite · 11/05/2022 21:27

What happens to all these makes afterwards? Do they just get chucked?

Halsall · 11/05/2022 21:29

Macramé isn’t my favourite thing but that panel on the front looks surprisingly OK.

Maireas · 11/05/2022 21:29

I hope not! Do the contestants take all the items home?.

Wolfcub · 11/05/2022 21:30

How can they criticise them for putting fringing on when they told them they had to do so

SoupDragon · 11/05/2022 21:31

Cristian's jacket is really good.
