I've such mixed views.
Overall S3 didn't do it for me. The plotlines & story arcs were too thin, a much more surrealist approach. In fairness, that appeared to be Lisa's intention, linking each to a particular movie.
The earlier series were so sharp & the poignancy came from that wonderful juxtaposition of comedy with the violence of the time.
But I did find the final episode moving, it brought back so many memories. I was a bit older for the signing of the GFA & I can remember so vividly how incredible it felt. I remember being in Prague with college (university) friends, in August 1994, after a summer working in Germany (so limited access to news at home, except for phone calls with family), including several from the North, of various sensibilities & getting our hands on a paper to read about the ceasefire. It was incredible, we were both excited & disbelieving & it really did feel like history happening before us.
So this episode was nostalgic & emotional but the humorous moments were forced, for me.
Stand-out moments:
- Joe asking Erin 'what if it works, and this becomes a ghost story you tell your wains?' 💔
- Gerry. Just superb. (And amazing acting by Tommy Tiernan, being as unlike his real life self as you can imagine).
- Ma Mary turning on the waterworks / guilt trip to Erin about the party.
- Eamon & Uncle Colm dancing & turning up Colm's trouser legs to make shorts!
Not mad about Chelsea Clinton cameo but it was a surprise.
