OMG @Kanaloa I think we must have been watching different shows as this was honestly the most perfect TV ending! How could you not love it??!!!

I think the whole third series has been pretty weak to be honest, so they would have had to pull out an absolutely amazing episode for me to be impressed. I think they’ve coasted on the brilliance of the earlier series on this one to be honest, and I’ve been a bit fed up with how they’ve gone. Obviously just my opinion since other people have loved it!

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 22:55

I've loved the whole series and had proper belly laughs each episode, as well as full on snots from crying!

pinkhousesarebest · 18/05/2022 22:57

I was fighting back the tears for the last 15 minutes. It was so moving and beautifully done. I remember it all so clearly.

Classica · 18/05/2022 23:04

Granda hopping out of the polling station with his little grandaughter was also v lovely.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/05/2022 23:08

I shed a tear at the end of the episode.

It triggered a memory of a friend's father dying suddenly when we were 16, every episode triggered memories for me as a 90's teenager.

There was funny moments in every episode, my least favourite was the train although I got the humor.

I'm going to watch the series again in a few days.

confusedlots · 18/05/2022 23:08

As someone who turned 18 literally a couple of days before the Good Friday Agreement Referendum and who placed my first vote that day, that finale was absolutely amazing, Lisa McGee is so talented. Crying at the ending and had to watch it all over again on C4+1 because there was so much to take in.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/05/2022 23:16

Ah ha I mistakenly thought the funeral was the final episode.

Off to watch it now. The excitement. 😆

BrianWankum · 18/05/2022 23:19

Just you and me I think @Kanaloa !

Granda hopping out of the polling station with his little grandaughter was also v lovely.

Yes I loved that, it could've been my FIL and DD.

I loved it, it was perfect. And I loved Chelsea Clinton!

Agree that in yesterday's episode it was about Clare's reaction and the group growing up in an instant, not the audience's grief for the man himself. I'm sure many of us have had that moment where you grow up in an instant. For me it was a phonecall as we sat down to watch ER the night we got home from holiday. Happy one minute, adult the next, switch flicked.

Anyway, tonight I bawled. Perfect ending.

Kanaloa · 18/05/2022 23:33

Maybe so 😂 I’m not a sympathetic person so I don’t tend to be easily won over by the nostalgia. I thought the first series was sharp and poignant, and the following ones were sloppy/mawkish.

Kanaloa · 18/05/2022 23:33

Sorry that was a reply to @BrianWankum

AnnesBrokenSlate · 18/05/2022 23:38

I caught up on the last two episodes today and cried a lot.

Last night's ending took me completely by surprise. My dad had an aneurysm when I was a student. I'd been out with friends at a show and came home to him being taken to the hospital. Luckily he survived but that entire section brought back a lot of emotions.

I thought tonight's ending with the GFA vote was perfect. So much hope and it really captured that feeling of being on the cusp of adulthood and on the cusp of a new dawn for the country.

I'm not sure about the Chelsea Clinton cameo. I'd rather have seen the cast in the present day if I'm honest. Liam Neeson was amazing, as always.

I totally agree. The whole series has been weak with some better episodes and some abysmal ones. The "adults" have been much more entertaining and the episodes where they feature heavily have been better. I was actually thrilled that Claire was absent for a lot of the show as the over acting and gurning makes it nearly unwatchable!
I thought tonight was one of the better episodes. I was nowhere near tears (even being the exact age and situation) but it was pretty good. I can't say I'd go back and rewatch like I did with the first two series but it was a good ending.

anonacfr · 19/05/2022 00:06

Last season has been weaker but I do love the 'real' parts of the show- the constant reminder of a conflict that was actually not that long ago. In the light of what is happening in the UK right now the voting scene was so moving- particularly Orla's smile on the ballot and the grandad looking to the future for his granddaughters.

It's hard to keep a show going on the strength of teenagers- what was lovely this time round was the parents, and I didn't mind seeing that shift.
As mentioned Gerry was the star- he is constantly bemused and frustrated by the family he married into, but he is there for them at every turn.

I do want to binge the 3 seasons all over again. What makes it special for me is its heart. It's such an optimistic joyful show.

AliceMcK · 19/05/2022 00:10

Just watched the last 2 episodes and still got a tear sliding down my face. loved grandad and granddaughter jumping together, made me think of my own DF. I thought there were so many funny and moving moments.

Whenever there is a final episode to anything it’s always going to be hard to wrap things up to everyone’s liking but for me I thought this was perfect.

TyneTeas · 19/05/2022 00:19

I didn't dislike the Chelsea Clinton bit, but I was half waiting after it for them to go to even just a brief shot of where everyone else was also now, not even necessarily in a big 'this is how their life turned out', but just maybe a quick glimpse of present day in a supermarket, at a park, working in an office, ordinary things just older...

DressingGownofDoom · 19/05/2022 00:54

Yeah it was a good ending! Definitely a piece of historical TV for me but I do live in Derry so. I was a bit younger when the GFA was announced but I remember rushing home after school and telling my granny 'we're going to have peace!'

My favourite DG episode is the one where they go to the take that concert I think. I cry laughing when the bomb disposal robot turns up and again when the travellers chase the girls.

DressingGownofDoom · 19/05/2022 00:55

TuTuLemon · 18/05/2022 22:27

Marvellous from start to finish, I feel quite emotional. It's not often finale's are brilliant but this one was.

Peaky Blinders is the ultimate epic ending!

Gakatsbsk · 19/05/2022 02:15

I really liked the Derry girls finale. Watched both episodes today. I think the flicking to real footage from Bloody Sunday etc was really well done, and for the English audience (I say this as an English person) a good reminder.

DG has been my comfort show for a while now, when I was working a horrid job through covid and just existing I used to watch Derry girls on constant repeat. Every day off. Whilst this wasn’t healthy it was so watchable and so funny. I grew up a catholic and sister Michael is just fantastic

I found it much better than the peaky blinders ending.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/05/2022 04:20

I've such mixed views.

Overall S3 didn't do it for me. The plotlines & story arcs were too thin, a much more surrealist approach. In fairness, that appeared to be Lisa's intention, linking each to a particular movie.

The earlier series were so sharp & the poignancy came from that wonderful juxtaposition of comedy with the violence of the time.

But I did find the final episode moving, it brought back so many memories. I was a bit older for the signing of the GFA & I can remember so vividly how incredible it felt. I remember being in Prague with college (university) friends, in August 1994, after a summer working in Germany (so limited access to news at home, except for phone calls with family), including several from the North, of various sensibilities & getting our hands on a paper to read about the ceasefire. It was incredible, we were both excited & disbelieving & it really did feel like history happening before us.

So this episode was nostalgic & emotional but the humorous moments were forced, for me.

Stand-out moments:

  • Joe asking Erin 'what if it works, and this becomes a ghost story you tell your wains?' 💔
  • Gerry. Just superb. (And amazing acting by Tommy Tiernan, being as unlike his real life self as you can imagine).
  • Ma Mary turning on the waterworks / guilt trip to Erin about the party.
  • Eamon & Uncle Colm dancing & turning up Colm's trouser legs to make shorts!

Not mad about Chelsea Clinton cameo but it was a surprise.

MrsToothyBitch · 19/05/2022 06:09

I found season 3 a bit patchy but I really enjoyed the last 2. I can't stand Clare (or Nicola Coughlan) and the gurning overacting but the death of her father was moving and she was very good. I was 7 when they signed the GFA and it brings back a lot of early memories to see it.

The finale ending was perfect. I loved the polling booth scene and was willing them to play "dreams" so was delighted to hear it! The "year" thing was wrong though. DP looked it up and it was a few months but not a year. I loved Orla opening the episode and liked the Chelsea ending but would've preferred to see Erin getting a reply & sticking it on her fridge door next to pictures of them in the 90s & now or something.

hopeishere · 19/05/2022 06:11

I loved the juxtaposition of the hope of the GFA compared to the shitshow politics here has ended up.

I hated the Chelsea Clinton cameo it's like "we have all these famous fans let's squash them in". A tiny glimpse of the girls now would have been better.

Agree the adults were much funnier this series.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/05/2022 07:23

The "year" thing was wrong though

They did that throughout the series - they juxtaposed events & timelines, intentionally. It wasn't always linear.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/05/2022 07:24

Apparently this explains the Chelsea Clinton cameo

I must have rewatched the first two seasons more times than I can count, it's one of my background noise shows and love every episode.

S3 I honestly only enjoyed the one with the young Mas. BUT. Loved the hour long finale. Something about Granda Joe and the little girl just melted my heart. He's a one of a kind character IMO (along with Michelle) and I'll miss watching them both but glad they're not dragging the arse out of it at the expense of the characters (which was my overwhelming feeling this season despite being a massive fan... I mean WTF happened to Claire? She was not always like that!)

Anyhoo, loved the ending and how they included absolutely everyone from the woman who took Toto to the guy who loaned them the tent. Big fan of big Dennis so was cheesing they put him in Grin.
