Totally agree @PlasticineMeg

Plus he was in the very first episode of Derry Girls as he picks Claire up from Sister Michael's office when the nun died (& Claire panics he'll tell her mum). Other than Mary, Gerry and Sarah, the parents are always peripheral characters - much as friend's parents are in real life.

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 20:42

I've still always gone to friend's parent's funerals - to support my friend, not because I was close to their parent.

Kanaloa · 18/05/2022 20:50

I see it obviously touched a lot of people. I just personally thought it was a cheap storyline. If it had been someone like the granddad or even if the aftermath had been properly explored instead of a two minute montage of Claire crying and everyone at the funeral maybe it would have worked for me. But as it was, it didn’t work for me. I felt like it was a bit weak compared to the first series especially, which was the best bit of telly I’d seen in a long long time.

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 18/05/2022 21:17

I wasn't keen on it as an episode for a few reasons.

I didn't buy the storyline with the shop girl and the kiss, there was absolutely no spark between them, no history or build up or anything.

The bit where Claire won't let them go backstage because she wanted them all to search for the shop girl, with whom she had exchanged about 3 words, felt really out of character somehow? I just didn't feel it was believable that she would force them to miss something so huge so that she could search for a near stranger.

The death I wasn't particularly moved by, I didn't feel invested in him as a character and the moment between them earlier in the episode was extremely unnatural.

I was also really distracted by them all wearing rainbow badges/colours very prominently. It was very highly stylised. Usually their outfits look authentic 'teenage girl from the 90s' which make me feel nostalgic but the rainbow badges felt a bit forced.

There were some great moments - the accidental engagement, everything the father and grandfather said and did, a few brilliant one-liners like the bouncer saying 'right come on Juliet and Juliet' made me laugh.

Not usually one to criticise Derry Girls as I have loved it, but I didn't like this particular episode.

Oh my god. That got me. Amazing ending. In tears here. Chelsea Clinton!!!!!!! Cracker!

BishyBarnyBee · 18/05/2022 22:04

Now that was an ending.

TuTuLemon · 18/05/2022 22:04

Well I wasn't expecting that ending!! Grin

PlasticineMeg · 18/05/2022 22:05

LOVED the ending!!!!

Would have liked a conclusion for Erin and James though

toomuchlaundry · 18/05/2022 22:06

Definitely wasn’t expecting that ending!

Classica · 18/05/2022 22:06

Loved the montage of them at the polling station. Found it v moving.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/05/2022 22:06

I think there was going to be a happy ending for Erin and James, for a while anyway. Great episode. So moving. Can't believe that was 25 years ago!

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 22:06

That was sheet perfection! And CHELSEA CLINTON!!! Fucking amazing!

PlasticineMeg · 18/05/2022 22:06

Massive props to Liam Neeson though. So much turmoil in one wordless scene

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 22:07

Sheer, not sheet!

absolutely

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/05/2022 22:08

Totally agree about Liam Neeson. Also: well done, Sister Michael! Kicked Bishop Brennan up the arse, I expect. And Uncle Colm saying he found Eamonn a bit boring was just wonderful.

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 22:08

The whole thing was perfection. I remember having Erin's exact dilemma and being petrified at voting yes due to the prisoner agreement, but also being afraid not to vote yes!

The whole thing was just sublime. Love love loved it!!

Cleebope2 · 18/05/2022 22:08

I was expecting Nadine Coyle to be The Commitment but they got the actual singer looking as young as ever!!! Maybe Nadine can be in the movie… she needs a cameo.

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 22:09

Fuck sake, being afraid to vote no!

TuTuLemon · 18/05/2022 22:09

I properly laughed out loud at Uncle Colm calling Eamon boring!

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/05/2022 22:09

Ignore me - I'm too emotional to type clearly.

Cleebope2 · 18/05/2022 22:10

Poor Gerry’s frustration at being stuck with the granda forever! Orla’ How many would you have to eat to eat a whole Jesus?’ And her smiley face on the voting paper.

Taytocrisps · 18/05/2022 22:10

Enjoyed the episode but for some reason I've had an Audio Description voice over for the last two episodes and it's really distracting. Haven't figures out how to turn it off. I'd love to watch it again without that feature.

Anyway, I enjoyed James's comment about the mini brides and Ma having to resort to her "When I'm dead" comment to try to placate Erin.

The song 'Dreams' at the end was perfectly chosen.

Reminds me of our school nun choir mistress who was so dedicated and how devastated she was when they moved her away.

theleafandnotthetree · 18/05/2022 22:13

I found that incredibly moving and emotional. My children were completely bemused by my tear filled reaction but (happily) it is history to them and they have no real understanding of what the political context meant or what a big deal the Good Friday agreement was. And is, I might add. What an ending!
