I don't think so. Sarah said the psychic she'd seen before claimed a US airman wanted to talk to her but when it turned out he didn't fancy her but wanted to tell the story of his plane crashing she was annoyed. I don't think that would fit at all with anything to do with Orla's dad, not least because nobody else in the family seemed to recognise who she was talking about.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 08/05/2022 14:01

I'm pretty sure that in the late 70s/early 80s when Orla would have been conceived, there wouldn't have been a US soldier stationed in NI since 1945. British Army, yes, American GIs no. I thought the soldier was just a random dead airman from WWII that had latched onto Sarah (allegedly).

EarringsandLipstick · 08/05/2022 17:39

I'm assuming this final series will end with the Good Friday Agreement.

I don't think so? The current series is set in 1996, so it won't span 2 years unless it's different to the other series.

JacquelineCarlyle · 08/05/2022 18:08

Lisa McGee has confirmed that there's a 45 minute special following the last episode which is focused on the GFA - so it's definitely ending with that.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 08/05/2022 18:16

Yes the GFA episode is an extra on top of this series.

Kanaloa · 08/05/2022 19:00

Maybe it will do a flash forward of all the girls coming back to Derry from uni? The actresses are much older than their characters so it wouldn’t be too crazy to have them play their older selves.

Current series must be 1997-8 as Mo Mowlem is Secretary of State for NI, so after the election in May 1997.

No it's definitely 1996 (or meant to be) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derry_Girls

But it jumps around timewise anyway - series one is set in 1994 but finishes with the Omagh bombing which was of course in 1998

JacquelineCarlyle · 09/05/2022 22:56

It wasn't the Omagh bombing though - it was stated that it was meant to be representative of the bombs in general not specific to any one (plus Omagh happened in August during the school holidays, so doesn't fit with the girls being at school anyway).

Oh I know that - but it was absolutely taking the Omagh bombing as the focus. The way in which everyone stopped in complete shock, it was a seismic moment, even given the long trajectory of horrific bombing and losses, people reacted in a specific way, and that was what was shown in those brilliant scenes in that episode. I've heard her talking about it.

As I said, the time line isn't adhered to, it's about representation.

The Omagh bombing for my generation was one of those moments where you will never forget where you were when you heard it.

JacquelineCarlyle · 10/05/2022 11:24

Totally agree @EarringsandLipstick - I'm from Belfast, so remember many events very specifically as I'm the exact age the Derry girls are in the set time period.

longtompot · 10/05/2022 22:34

Another good episode. Love the echos of the grown up gang as kids and the similarities with their kids. Nice touch I thought.

AngelinaFangelina · 10/05/2022 22:43

For me, this was the best episode so far. No over acting, gurning....the "adults" for me have been the only reason to keep watching series 3.

KathyHoover · 10/05/2022 22:46

The kids and I all sit down on a Tuesday night with ice cream and watch! Great show that has everyone giggling to bits.

TottersBlankly · 10/05/2022 22:49

Oh, that was glorious!

SingleHandSue · 10/05/2022 23:04

A brilliant episode.

I loved the actress playing young Mary, she had the older actress’ mannerisms and way of speaking perfectly.

JacquelineCarlyle · 10/05/2022 23:56

I loved it. Actually made me quite emotional actually and no idea why! Agree the younger actresses were fab! Wonder if they'll have their own spin off series! I loved the tribute at the end saying it was for all the mammies!

JacquelineCarlyle · 10/05/2022 23:57

Sorry for the double actually!

TottersBlankly · 11/05/2022 06:44

Can never have too many ‘actuallys’!

SirChenjins · 11/05/2022 06:54

What a brilliant episode! Made me quite emotional remembering my own school discos and dramas with teenage friends, wondering where our lives would take us. Superb acting from each of them with the young Mammies, their older mammies and their daughters all tieing in together. Loved it.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 11/05/2022 07:42

Such a wonderful episode - I loved the tribute for the Mammies. The warmth shines through
(And the American Brad was a nice touch!)

Canadian! 😉

withacherryonthetop · 11/05/2022 10:07

Fantastic episode! The younger girls did a brilliant job- especially young mary!

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 11/05/2022 10:55

Brilliant episode last night

FolkSongSweet · 11/05/2022 10:58

I missed Michelle last night (my fave character) but the tribute at the end to the mammies made me burst into tears thinking of my own mammy who is a similar age to the mammies in the show and whose youth was totally blighted by the troubles. The mammies have always held it together for everyone 💔
