Our Girl Thread 63 "Our Girl Revisited and then what?"

We started to follow "Our Girl" back in 2014 and although there will be no further series, we do revisit from time to time. We have watched all seven series of "Soldier Soldier" to keep up our military terminology and galloped through three series of "The Musketeers". Of course, there is a definite connection between "Our Girl" and "The Musketeers" in the delightful form of Luke Pasqualino. We are now revisiting series 2 of Our Girl and are trying to decide what to watch after that.

How about a period drama of some kind next? The obvious one is Downton Abbey - lots of episodes but it's pretty recent and has been repeated a lot, or going back a long way the original series of Upstairs Downstairs - plenty of episodes there but it may seem very tame compared to OG - all very studio based.

I can think of quite a few 'old' series, but I mean 1980's or earlier, but less more recent ones. I quite like WW2 dramas such as 'Wish me Luck' (3 series) or even 'We'll Meet Again' (13 episodes but never got a second series, so a slightly odd ending). Those are period with a bit of military action thrown in, but I don't think they are streaming anywhere, so would be DVD only.

What sort of dramas would appeal?

Rhubarb01 · 13/04/2022 22:42

From iplayer - Spooks (9 series), Hustle (8 series) or Ordinary Lives (12 episodes)

eejittwo · 13/04/2022 22:54

BTW - wasn’t the absent military father one of the themes for a young officer in one of the later series of Soldier Soldier?

Rhubarb01 · 13/04/2022 23:01

Another suggestion from free streaming on My5 - two series of the new version of All Creatures Great and Small. Watched it with trepidation when it first started, but really loved it by the end of the first series. There are 14 episodes including two Christmas specials.

Magi84 · 14/04/2022 06:36

Spooks is good idea. I really enjoyed that. Also changes of main men in it was great as we had Matthew McFadyen, Richard Armitage and Rupert Penry-Jones. All just up our street I think Smile

eejittwo · 14/04/2022 08:14

Rhu - haven’t seen any of these series, so it would all be a great discovery for me, like the first series of OG and all of Soldier Soldier.

eejittwo · 14/04/2022 08:16

Have watched All Creatures…

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2022 22:05

I've never watched Spooks and when I googled it esrlier, was impressed with the big name actors in it.

Should we go with that then? It seems to appeal to us all.

Yeah, Spooks it is, then. Is it on iPlayer?

Rhubarb01 · 14/04/2022 22:42

Yes, eejit it is on iplayer. There is one episode in series 1 that gets remembered for the wrong reasons. I think it may be the 2nd or 3rd episode.

Looks as if I need to start the new thread for our next watchalong. Any ideas what to call it? Are we still keeping the OG heading? I could do with a few thoughts on the wording please.

Oh am pleased we are going with Spooks. Really good cast of actors and varying stories. As for a title ilove probably best to stick with what we have already and just substitute Spooks for the word "what" at the end. Thank you for always keeping track of the threads and when we need a new one.

Ilovelblue · 19/04/2022 08:45

Rhu and Magi, what have you suggested?? I took a look at the first episode of Spooks last night. I think I am hooked. How come I've never watched it before? I might be in danger of binge watching....

OP posts:
Magi84 · 19/04/2022 09:06

Yes it really is something one could easily find themselves binge watching. So glad you think it will suit our criteria! As with all series there are times when you probably have a little moan about it but that only adds to the "must keep watching this" feeling.

Rhubarb01 · 19/04/2022 18:51

Yes, it's good. You've been missing a lot there ilove and so many episodes!

Title suggestion: "Stay focused, Stay alert, Stay alive and carry on....spying" the OG Addicts thread number ??

Rhubarb01 · 19/04/2022 18:52

Evening, it looks like they've had a complete face lift on here today. I think it's supposed to be more user friendly...but it will take a while to get used to it.

Georgie is reorganising the meagre medical supplies - like turning the cans in the cupboard to show the labels.

Rhubarb01 · 20/04/2022 21:03

Yep, she's counted all the bandages a dozen times already.
