Late to the game I know. I’ve only watched the pilot and am not as impressed as I thought I’d be. I honestly found Jack quite annoying. I can’t get over the fact his wife tried to give birth to TRIPLETS vaginally?! When high risk? Ummm no wonder they got that outcome! How awful.

Then there’s that guy trying to push his way into Kate’s home.

And that guy (Randolph?) bringing an absolute stranger ex druggie into his home and meeting his daughters? And his wife having no issue with it??

Maybe my standards have got too high these days but it was just so woolly and unbelievable and cliched!

I think it’s like marmite. My mum hated it, I love it.

ScrambledSmegs · 23/01/2022 19:38

I watched the first season because a friend told me how much she loved it, but found that rather than getting involved with the emotional stuff I just made this face Hmm all the time. I basically wasted hours because I expected to be hooked - more fool me.

It's clearly not my thing. If you're not into it by episode 3 I wouldn't keep trying!

BiscuitLover3678 · 23/01/2022 19:46

@Garman

In the time it's set natural birth would have been the default for all births, my friend had triplets naturally two years ago so I don't know what your problem is with that.
Seriously? I’ve never heard of that especially for such a high risk pregnancy.

When is it set?

@Toffeepenni

Tried to get into it but it felt like it was just one long attempt of trying to make me cry.
If it’s going to be sad it needs to be really good! I don’t feel the need to cry otherwise.

I did actually like it for a while I’m not sure what happened but the season where they had Covid / pandemic stuff I just lost interest

Felt so cloying and mixed with politics

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 23/01/2022 20:07

Once when ds1 (16) was refusing to do something I’d asked (like clean his school shoes or something) I said he had to sit and watch tv with me until he was ready to do (whatever it was). Then I put This is Us on. Took him about 5 minutes to crack.

manseymoo1987 · 23/01/2022 20:09

It's fantastic. Keep with it.

Yutes · 23/01/2022 20:14

I think you need to watch the first two episodes to get a feel for it. I thought everything was happening in the same timeline, so once you wrap your head around otherwise it’s a different take.

Yy to the massive cloy of trying to make everyone cry all the time.
I liked Virgin River, it’s a different kind of hallmark sweet

Ahh ok it sounds like there’s more to it than I think. Let me watch a few more.

I know people love it but i really dislike it, so twee! Stuck with it for 2 series. It didn't get better.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/01/2022 20:28

I gave it 4 episodes and gave up. Really twee and ridiculous, also found the characters quite preachy and unrealistic dialogue. Kept thinking I was missing something!

Birth is much more medicalised in the US so it didn't ring true about the vaginal birth either.

I'm sure I like lots of programmes that others consider ridiculous!

BiscuitLover3678 · 23/01/2022 20:54

I hadn’t watched the final three minutes of the pilot IVE JUST GOT IT! Different times okaaaay 😂

My bad.

It’s actually made it a whole lot more interesting.

So I guess 80s and now?

Anyone else feel really sad at all those newborns lying alone in that nursery crying to themselves? Sad

BiscuitLover3678 · 23/01/2022 20:56

I’ve looked it up and even Google says how rare and dangerous it is to give birth to triplets. My only thought is C-section we’re so much more dangerous back then they really did weigh it up a bit more? They seemed pretty stubborn too.

If I’m not wrong the babies were born 1979? So yeah pretty different times and medical practices.

I’ve personally loved seasons 1-4, with the odd Hmm episode that doesn’t make much sense and leaves you a bit perplexed. But you get to know the characters and there is so much emotional stuff… I love a good cry. I agree though that the Covid season was just… bizarre.

Watching season 6 currently and it’s slightly better than 5 but still not back to its older glory. It’ll be interesting to see how they wrap up storylines and I can’t help but feel like there will be a loose end somewhere.

The timeline is at least much more realistic than Virgin River’s! That show has had 3 seasons (in as many years) but only a couple of months have passed in the series. It better have a jump into season 4 or else we’ll end up losing our minds. And I say that as a massive fan of VR!

I’m watching that series now and will stick with it because I think there is just one more after that. I don’t know why they included covid, they’d had flash-forwards to covid times with no masks (the triplet’s 40th birthday) and because of the way it’s set up they could easily have said that it wouldn’t make sense to include it. The pandemic in general, in ordinary people’s lives, is not interesting.

As an aside, one thing I do appreciate about this is us is that it’s about 18 episodes a series and they’ve always said they’ve planned the story and are stopping with season 6. Some American shows really drag on well past when they should stop (greys anatomy!), and get more and more convoluted with ridiculous storylines, so a show saying “we’ve planned it out, it’s 6 seasons then we’re done” is quite refreshing.

SickAndTiredAgain · 24/01/2022 06:49

Urgh triplets’

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/01/2022 09:20

@elenacampana

I’ve loved This Is Us since I saw the first episode. It may be that it’s just not for you!
Me too it’s fab

We all like different programmes

I tried game of thrones. Turned off after 15m even though all said amazing

Youngatheart00 · 24/01/2022 09:25

I love This is Us. One of the only shows I’ve watched all the series of (I usually lose interest, even with hyped up things like Succession and Homeland).

I didn’t like all the Vietnam flashbacks but overall I think the way they weave in all the different timeframes is really clever.

skippy67 · 24/01/2022 09:28

I like it, and I didn't need anyone to "sell" it to me. We're all different.

BoodleBug51 · 24/01/2022 09:32

I was hooked on the 1st 2 seasons but just seem to engage with it again.

I started watching Chicago Fire when I had Covid, and went through 3 seasons over Christmas. I'm now on Season 6 and nearly onto 7. It's literally addictive, something I didn't find with This is Us. It almost was a bit too depressing and deep at times for me, nothing to lighten it.

BoodleBug51 · 24/01/2022 09:32

just can't seem to engage, that should say.

mardyandmafted · 24/01/2022 09:40

I've really been enjoying This is Us. I love all the little links between the stories.
DH and DD tried to watch it with me and hated it though.

PumpkinCrumble · 24/01/2022 15:37

No it doesn’t but I’ve watched them all now so sticking till the end!

Weirdly I really enjoyed the Vietnam season. The Covid one is went totally of the boil. I feel like the later series mess with some of the internal lore that have already been established so that annoys me!
