Ronald Dahl - Tales of the Unexpected
Watching this on Sky Arts when I can.
Made it the 80's I think?
Can't believe how good this is, so clever.

Ruth Rendell, Catherine Cookson, Yes, Minister - this old stuff is soooooo much better than anything I've seen in the last 10 years on British TV.

Anyone got any other similar gems?

Roald - auto correct ruined this for me!

I used to watch it as a child. Some of them gave me nightmares!

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 07/01/2022 19:22

Tenko is another great 80s series.

JohannSebastianBach · 07/01/2022 19:23

There's one called Flypaper that scared me witless!

tintodeverano2 · 07/01/2022 19:23

Most of them are on YouTube in full. The first couple of series are by Roald Dahl, then the rest are by other writers.

SortMyHouse · 07/01/2022 19:26

Thanks - forgot about YouTube.

Yes! Tenko was brilliant.
middleager · 07/01/2022 19:31

I love these - so dramatic!
Takes me back to my childhood.

If you like these, try Ghost Story for Christmas series on YouTube/i-Player, some truly bizarre ones from the 70s like 'Stigma' and 'The Ice House'.

ChickenGotLegs · 07/01/2022 19:31

I've caught a few episodes recently. I remember watching it when I was a child in the 80s with my mum. I never forgot the music and the dancing lady 😆 I love short stories like these!

Bellevu · 07/01/2022 19:32

Ano Domino

middleager · 07/01/2022 19:32

Also, Survivors. Available on YouTube. It was remade in the noughties, but the original series is a classic.

Day of the Triffids terrified me too!

middleager · 07/01/2022 19:34

The Life and Loves of a She-Devil

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 07/01/2022 19:34

Day of the Triffids.

Oh, cool. I've got the box set on DVD but glad to hear it's out there for new fans!

SortMyHouse · 07/01/2022 19:35

Yeah, what is that 'sexy' dancing lady about?! Grin

Weird, l thought they were amazing when original.

I think they’re crap now!

Rummikub · 07/01/2022 19:37

I didn’t realise it was roald Dahl that wrote these. Did he do the royal jelly episode? It’s still vivid in my mind!

Dahl wrote the earlier episodes including Royal Jelly, and introduced many of them too.

Sky Arts show Tales of the Unexpected on a loop, so all series are aired, including the episodes made in the US. The calibre of actors is staggering - Sir John Gielgud, John Mills, Janet Leigh, Derke Jacobi, Joseph Cotton, Charles Dance, Joan Collins and Pauline Collins to name just a few.

I watched each episode at least twice during the first lockdown!

Chewbecca · 07/01/2022 19:48

I still don’t like saunas!

Rebelmcstreettuff · 07/01/2022 19:49

Loved it! Especially the one about the royal jelly with the bees and the one where the woman pushed a love rival into the road thinking she was having an affair with her husband, then found out she wasn't,gripping stuff!

NomDePrune · 07/01/2022 20:29

There was one with a wooden Henry Moore type statue; a guest got his head stuck in it and the owner would not have it sawn into...haven't seen since it first aired but it stayed with me
I went out with a guy whose claim to fame was that his Dad designed/created the 'sexy lady'!

Nitgel · 07/01/2022 20:32

I'm watching Tenko on Drama yet again. Force's tv show some gems recently the Omega Factor.

It was Joan Colins iirc who got her head stuck
Nitgel · 07/01/2022 20:34

I'm wishing someone would reshow Life of a she devil again.
