What to watch with intelligent, interesting un-Botoxed 50-something women?

After being enraged by the new SATC, where everyone over 50 is clearly a bumbling, irrelevant fool, I am wondering what I should be watching instead. Any suggestions? I have nearly every streaming service. I know there are a lot of grim crime dramas- Happy Valley, Unforgotten- but anything a bit more cheery?

Not in her 50s, but Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso is in her late 40s and appears to have a lovely natural face, as well as being an awesome kick ass character.

I thought it wasn’t going to be a show I enjoyed a the premise is about an American manager brought in to head a UK football club, but the football is very much an aside, while the characters are brilliantly portrayed. Worth a watch if you have Apple TV

I like The Chair with Sandra Oh.

UnaOfStormhold · 30/12/2021 22:07

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe has women of all ages many of them living the hell out of life, definitely worth a watch.

tribpot · 30/12/2021 22:10

I don't think anyone would describe Succession as 'a bit more cheery'! It has one lead actor who is a woman over 50.

I was thinking Dead To Me but Christina Applegate is only just 50 now and Linda Cardellini is mid-40s. There's also The Equalizer - Queen Latifah is 51. Mom with Allison Janney - not sure how easy it is to watch that in the UK at the moment.

BlueCowWonders · 30/12/2021 22:12

I read your title as a description of your friends and what you'd like to watch together Blush

But agree on Ted Lasso - excellent for showing female friendships

And The Morning Show, though the initial content is extremely depressing.

SilverRingahBells · 30/12/2021 22:15

Actually LOLd at Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.
Also watching Gypsy on Netflix which has a mature woman in a central role Grin

More seriously, my favourite TV shows centring older women who are not actual monsters are Only Connect, Strictly Come Dancing, The Crown, or anything with Lucy Worsley or Mary Beard.

I’ve watched a few great dramas recently with strong older female leads
Deep Water
Guilt 2
Motherland and that one with the Danish woman and Christopher Ecclestone

the good fight
don't look up
tiger king

If you can handle subtitles then Die Herbstzeitlosen is a wonderful Swiss comedy about four elderly rural women opening a lingerie store and running into all sorts of issues with their menfolk.

m.imdb.com/title/tt0841109/

Bionicname · 30/12/2021 22:56

50 is not elderly though!

Netflix has a show called On The Verge, only one season so far but it stars Julie Delpy and Elisabeth Shue.

It's light easy watching about four women in their late 40s and their family lives and relationships etc.

I really enjoyed it and hoping there is another season.

Succession is definitely more cheery than Happy Valley, the grimmest show on TV Grin

I mostly find it funny (and it is excellent)!

Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 31/12/2021 00:25

I was also going to mention Dead to Me. Love the characters. .
Also The Big C. Laura Linney is excellent in it. I found it very female focussed and the character development is really good. It's sad, of course, but there are some really happy and laugh-out-loud moments.

SueGeneris · 31/12/2021 00:46

It’s crime but Ozark is a brilliant drama with great female characters.

She’s under 50 by some way but Natasha Lyonne is fantastic in Russian Doll.

TedImgoingmad · 31/12/2021 00:53

Kim Cattrall was in the excellent remake of Sensitive Skin. Series 1&2 on Amazon Prime. It's a Canadian remake of the UK version that starred Joanna Lumley, also excellent. Humour mixed with pathos and very intelligent.

Last Tango in Halifax is a lovely blend of drama and humour.

RoyKentsChestHair · 31/12/2021 02:27

I liked the first series of The Morning Show but the second just seemed to drag and I found Jennifer Anniston’s facial fillers very distracting.

RoyKentsChestHair · 31/12/2021 02:30

Same with Succession - kept waiting for something big to happen but it seems to be a lot of tension with not a lot of resolution and quite definitely a sausage fest, with only Geri and Shiv getting any real air time. Would have liked to have seen more of Logan’s wife (can’t even recall her name she was so incidental, despite clearly being very influential in his life!) and for some of the other WAGs not to have been ex prostitutes.
