What to watch with intelligent, interesting un-Botoxed 50-something women?

After being enraged by the new SATC, where everyone over 50 is clearly a bumbling, irrelevant fool, I am wondering what I should be watching instead. Any suggestions? I have nearly every streaming service. I know there are a lot of grim crime dramas- Happy Valley, Unforgotten- but anything a bit more cheery?

Roy Marcia. I agree she wasn’t in it enough. There was also Harriet Walter but she’s only in it briefly.

In Back to Life the main character is about 40 and her mum is in it quite a lot. Neither looked fillered or Botoxed.

Another vote for Ozark. I love watching Laura Linney look like an actual 50ish mum of teens (who also has a sex life without having a perfect body!).

Call My Agent on Netflix. In French with subtitles.

Emily in Paris has a very sexy, chic character who is well into her 50s and looks amazing - Sylvie. It is kind of rubbish but great fun at the same time.

I second the On The Verge suggestion.

They always were though - vacuous, self-obsessed, desperate for men, zero ability to show genuine interest in the world around them or their own careers. I loathed SATC then. It is so patronising to women.

Have you watched Frankie and Grace? That's fun. Though I think they have both been botoxed to the max.

Agree on Sylvie. She is also in Call my Agent. Ozark for definite - Laura Linney and Janet McTeer are superb.

I May Destroy You (Groundbreaking genius.)

Succession (Stupendous. Fascinating on women, too.)

Mad Men (If you haven’t already. You will be screaming at the misogyny.)

My Brilliant Friend (Truly glorious on love and violence.)

Alma's not normal. Both the mum and the gran are difficult characters but not fools.

Somebodylikeyew · 31/12/2021 12:45

I thought this was suggestions for a TV club- like a book club for people who can’t be arsed to read Grin

I might start that.

It’s been mentioned above and you may have already seen it, but I love Last Tango in Halifax for precisely this reason. Both Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker playing nuanced, interesting and relatable middle-aged women, with a full and complex life. Wish there were more series like this!

Another recommendation for ‘Mare of Eastown’.

JanisMoplin · 31/12/2021 16:27

Wow thanks for all the reccos! Some of these I already know and love. Love Ozark; it's grim but Laura Linney's life makes mine look easy in comparison. And love the other women-Ruth and Helen- too.
Love Grace and Frankie too; Jane Fonda has had plenty of Botox but still looks real so I give her a pass.
I obviously loved Succession; it is impossible not to.
Liked Mare of EastTown.

I will come back to this thread. I remembered that I have always wanted to properly watch all 8 seasons of The Good Wife but never had the time. I have watched bits of The Good Fight but I think I prefer The Good Wife. Adore Christine Baranski in both. Also still haven't got around to Call My Agent.

I liked Dead to Me but I think the 3rd season has been forthcoming for ages? I lost track.
