On tonight at 9.00, it stars Claire Foy and it's from the same people who did A Very English Scandal a few years ago.

I pronounce it Inver air ee too, I have relatives nearby and have visited many times.

I've only watched the first two but I think humour would be totally wrong for it, there really isn't anything funny about the whole setup, everyone is behaving appallingly. Really enjoying it though.

TonTonMacoute · 27/12/2021 23:19

I couldn't really work out what happened at the end to get Ian so enraged

He took her diary out of her bag and found a record of all her 'liaisons', so he went to search her desk for more evidence.

Why did they need to have a trial to divorce?

Because you would sue for a divorce, if the other side disputed your petition then the court would have to decide as there had to be a guilty and an innocent party.

If a woman was the guilty party in those days that was pretty bad for her, if a man wanted a divorce but didn't want his wife to be branded an adulteress then he would manufacture a situation where he was 'caught' with another woman so his wife could then sue him for divorce.

I've gone right off Paul Bettany (love him in A Knight's Tale) after reading the article his whatsapps to Johnny Depp re Amber Heard.

Me too.

The current Duke of Argyll competed in elephant polo. No I didn’t know that was a thing either.

Me three. I used to like him.

Me four.
Like the drama though

StormyCornishSeas · 28/12/2021 00:19

When ever I've talked about the Inveraray to Scottish people they've also pronounced it Inver-rare-ee or never corrected me when I've called it that.

AntisocialJusticeWarrior · 28/12/2021 00:22

Yes I did too and both leads were really good. I always think Claire Foy is excellent.

Some context about the Duchess. She had 8 miscarriages Sadwww.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10346221/CHRISTOPHER-STEVENS-gives-British-Scandal-five-star-thumbs-up.html

ZenNudist · 28/12/2021 00:44

Think I will look up that Guinness book.

Both sides awful people but he's arguably worse by being so violent. It was more sympathetic to her but she did some awful things.

If framed it as a triumph that she let the pictures come out and stopped him from holding it over her forever. It was also very pointed that men of the era were allowed to do what the fuck they wanted (including choking a woman) without shame but a woman who had plenty of sex was pilloried and spat at. It was sickening to watch.

Same. Those texts were vile.

@StormyCornishSeas

That's because that's how we pronounce it Grin.

It's the same with Rothesay which can be pronounce Roth-sey or Roth-say, I guess if you are emphasising the end/being a bit precise. They don't sound all that different n my head.

Piggyinblankets · 28/12/2021 06:41

The Scottish actor playing Maragaret's father said Inver - air - ee.

I assume only the RP gentry said uh at the end.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2021 08:08

I've just read those texts, dear God!!Shock

LadyNell · 28/12/2021 08:30

Well acted but what a vile pair they were

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 08:58

Agog for Ep 3 tonight! Thanks for pointing out it's three nights on the trot, not a Sunday evening once a week event. I like binge watching a series, my husband doesn't. If he hadn't been interested in this, I'd have watched the whole thing on my own by now, but he is interested, so we have to watch one episode at a time, old skool. Shock Grin

I knew the Duchess's doctor in Ep 2 was a familiar face, but was surprised when I checked the cast list to see it was Miles Jupp. Did not recognise him. He does a very passable Scottish accent.

Not a single pleasant, decent person in this story so far! What a bunch of entitled, grasping inadequates.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 28/12/2021 09:04

It made me shudder to the core remembering boarding school and my cold fish upper class relatives. Not lords and ladies but still upper class.
Now live in the warmth and chaos of Glastonbury amongst normal people and would never go back.
The upper classes are truly hideous. I can't watch any more of it.

LadyEloise1 · 28/12/2021 09:06

Thank you for all the pronouncing tips.
Someone mentioned that her father pronounced it In ver a ray. I noticed that too.
Was that to let us know that he didn't come from posh beginnings ?
He also had a Scottish lilt. Unlike the posh Duke.

I wondered what got the Duke so suddenly enraged that he checked her desk and diaries.
Wikipedia says he had to get a locksmith in to open the secret compartment which held the photos.

Those children caught in the crossfire. His and hers. Sad

gerardsbutler · 28/12/2021 09:17

One thing that I thought odd but may be I missed it. They were in bed together in Paris, he got up and checked her diary and got back to London to raid her desk all before the Duchess woke up the following morning.

Piggywaspushed · 28/12/2021 09:28

No, the DF pronounced it Inver air ee. And it's because the actor is Scottish.

According to The Scottish Sun viewers picked up on the pronunciation and much high quality investigative journalism revealed that there us footage if the Duke and Duchess saying Inverara.

Pegasussnail · 28/12/2021 09:31

gerard I think he left and it showed her staring into space.

But he went back (doesn't mean he made it to their home that morning)

Piggywaspushed · 28/12/2021 09:31

I am finding it all very superficial tbh gerard. All those gaps like that are grating. I know they were superficial people but I feel I don't know them at all and am having to check things online.

The same thing happened in ep 1 when they were on a boat train and then suddenly in Scotland . And, also, where are her daughters all the time??

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2021 09:32

Well if the series was true to life then it was because she said that they must stop doing awful things to each other and he got suspicious.
ExquisitelyDecorated · 28/12/2021 09:33

Yes to wondering where the children are.

Maelstrom23 · 28/12/2021 09:44

Think the kids were packed off to boarding school at 8 or the father's got custody in those days. Like Princess Diana's father.
Margaret had beautiful dogs all her life , black mini poodles, she seemed to adore them so she couldn't have been that bad. Grin
