On tonight at 9.00, it stars Claire Foy and it's from the same people who did A Very English Scandal a few years ago.

@Piggywaspushed

Yes, they probably shouldn't have emphasised its connection to the Hugh Grant programme.
I wonder why they did that? The stories really have very little in common.
Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2021 17:05

The title and the production team. Different writer though.

The HG was a ratings hit , hence the marketing.

longwayoff · 27/12/2021 17:06

Can I just add that anyone who missed the Jeremy Thorpe, or who thought Hugh Grant oh definitely not, do track it down. It's surprisingly good.

Yes it was very good. Captured the sleaziness of that era very well, and Ben Whishaw was excellent as always.

I live near Inveraray and the town itself is very pretty. It's a gorgeous location. (Boast alert coming up - I've met the current Duchess!)

She's from the Cadbury family of Dairy Milk fame, isn't she?

Seems the tradition of marrying wealthy women is still alive and well in Clan Campbell!

WineAway · 27/12/2021 20:40

@FitAt50 human beings cannot be hermaphrodite. Lady Colin Campbell was born with a DSD. Please don’t use that term it’s very insulting.

I’m enjoying the scenery & outfits.

SammyScrounge · 27/12/2021 20:45

@PuppyMonkey

I liked it a lot too. Yeah they had no chemistry, almost like she only married him for the castle or something.
And he only married her for her money.
sleepyhoglet · 27/12/2021 20:59

Why did they need to have a trial to divorce? It didn't even seem to discuss what she or he got from the divorce settlement

maxbabi · 27/12/2021 21:03

@TooWicked

DH I binge watched all 3 episodes last night on iPlayer, I thought it was excellent. I do like Claire Foy.

And then I looked the whole story up on the Internet and ended up staying up till 2am reading about it all, up to the present day.

Same here! Thought the current crop of "Lords etc" a bit wasteful (like doing yoga over lockdown etc rtc)
LadyEloise1 · 27/12/2021 21:05

How do you pronounce Inverary ?

Blueberrycreampie · 27/12/2021 21:06

I read that the correct pronunciation is Inverarer. Strange I know.

Tinsellittis · 27/12/2021 21:06

@Wingedharpy

I'm married to a posh Scot. Thank God he's not this posh! What horrible people.
Do you live in a Castle? @Wingedharpy
sleepyhoglet · 27/12/2021 21:17

I liked the clip at the end and would have liked to have seen more of the real Margaret

colouringindoors · 27/12/2021 21:54

I think it's really good. And really sad. And I've only seen Ep 1!

longwayoff · 27/12/2021 22:03

Happy to report I found Ep 2 far more interesting than Ep1. Will watch tomorrow.

IcedPurple · 27/12/2021 22:11

I couldn't really work out what happened at the end to get Ian so enraged. He found the smutty pics but even before that he was in a rage. If it was evidence of her seeing other men, didn't he pretty much know that already? Neither of them seemed to make a secret of their frequent 'indiscretions'.

GoodMorningMillicent · 27/12/2021 22:15

He found the notepaper from the hotel which the Duchess used to write the fake paternity letter from ‘Wee Wee’ before he found the smutty pics

FlorrieLindley · 27/12/2021 22:17

@IcedPurple yes, the present Duchess was a Cadbury before marriage.
Older people (some of them) pronounce it "Inver-arah", but most folk nowadays say "Inveraray" (Inver-ah-ray)

Thanks, that makes sense. I didn't think he'd get so mad over a few affairs with random pretty boys. The upper classes in those days tended to be rather 'pragmatic' about such matters.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/12/2021 22:23

I've watched all three episodes. I loved it.

Why do people think it should be funny/ humourous ? Confused

I think it's because the title naturally and no doubt deliberately invited comparisons with 'A Very English Scandal' which was very funny in parts.

The lack of 'humour' doesn't bother me. It all seems rather sad and tawdry, and while I guess you could say the same is true of 'A Very English Scandal', some of the situations there led themselves to humour more than this does.

colouringindoors · 27/12/2021 22:29

Anazing she survived that fall!

gerardsbutler · 27/12/2021 22:37

I really enjoyed it. I think I’ll buy Margaret’s autobiography.

Inveraray is pronounced Inver, A, Ray.

Inver is as I. Inverness, A and then Ray as in the name.

I’d also like to see more of the clip with the real Margaret.

Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2021 23:03

I pronounce it Inver air ee

Seems the posh pronounce it like Islay ( Isla).
