Well this is boring.

OP posts:
Akire · 17/01/2022 20:27

I worked it out she’s only about 83! She was one first midwife’s to train that was around 1902 so say she was 18 that make her 83 in 1967

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 17/01/2022 20:29

83? Is that all?

Thought she’d be much older.

At this point in the series she’s basically Yoda.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 17/01/2022 21:00

@IsolaPribby

I thought the whole story with Bernard and Nancy was very reminiscent of a chapter in Shadows of the Workhouse, where Jenny befriends an old soldier with leg ulcers. He dies eventually after having his legs amputated.
I cried myself to sleep after reading that in the book.

Would someone’s foot really come off do you think? Surely sepsis would set in first?

SantaClawsServiette · 17/01/2022 21:04

@dayswithaY

I did notice that the meths drinker was Sir Dave of Cliftonville, the DJ from I'm Alan Partridge.

Strange that they chose to show the singer rejecting her career to stay home with her baby. She might regret that when the baby is 15 and screaming "I hate you" in her face.

There were lots of women who gave up work to stay home with kids in the 60s and even to a large degree through the 70s. It was the late 70s and early 80s when you started to see neighbourhoods emply in the day because mums all went out to work.
UnicornsReal · 17/01/2022 21:21

The greasepaint stage make up totally puts me off now, along with all the wigs. Why do they need make you trowelled on like that?
Sheila and the doctor do my head in. It’s become a parody of itself . It used to be so much better.

LavenderAskew · 17/01/2022 22:36

What kiss? How have i missed this?

I've just watch and deleted it!!

Pebble21uk · 17/01/2022 22:47

I think the foot falling off thing is apparantely quite realistic - though I've got to the age of 52 and learned something new there!!
I took to Twitter last night and looked up 'hashtag callthemidwife' and several medical persons said a similar thing had happened to them... very often with diabetic patients.
One said he was a young and inexperienced, he peeled and sock off and three toes came with it! Shock He panicked... and put the sock back on and went to get someone more senior!
Another said he was X-raying somone's foot and pulled the plate out from under the foot when finished and a toe came with it!! He said he learnt that day that you should always lift limbs from x-ray plates!

Mind blown!!!

wishingitwasspring · 17/01/2022 22:57

I once took down a dressing on an ulcerated heel and off it came... the whole thing.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/01/2022 23:02

Yes it can definitely happen, I think dr mansplain said it was dry gangrene so wouldn't be wet and infected.

So grim though, poor Nancy!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 17/01/2022 23:20

Bernard X. Heartbreaking. 🌼 🪟

You didn’t miss much with that kiss. My face has been in closer proximity to my feet. And I’m far from bendy.

I’m so bloody heartily sick of the Turners.

And Chelsea teef in Poplar.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 17/01/2022 23:21

And Albert. Sad

SantaClawsServiette · 18/01/2022 00:07

I actually feel bad for actors about their teeth. They aren't allowed to have normal ones any more, it's all veneers. It must cost a bundle when you are just starting out and are working at some crap job.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/01/2022 00:24

We had a toddler who'd been seriously I'll and his fingers went black and necrotic. We'd take the dressings of and the tops would come off.

AlwaysLatte · 18/01/2022 00:25

I watched one because my mum loves snd I wanted to give it a go but the music drove me INSANE.

MorrisZapp · 18/01/2022 08:37

It's Acorn Antiques now isn't it. Fred coming over all snowflake generation about the meths drinkers was beyond awkward.

If any clever person can remember the name of the British actress who played a drug kingpin in a later part of Breaking Bad then had the lead in that Welsh brewery thing where they collectively murdered their horrible boss, Laura something, she has very unactorly teeth.

I only say this because I've had invisalign myself and became hyper aware of other people's gnashers. Fair play to her for sticking to what nature gave her, especially while looking for work in America.

LavenderAskew · 18/01/2022 08:49

I have veneers, they are constantly slagged off on here. I had a bad accident as a child and lost parts of a few teeth, they were rebuilt and covered with veneers. Always good to hear I look abnormal. 😪

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat · 18/01/2022 10:30

I think disguising veneers should be part of the Makeup Dept. I find them quite unnerving. Teeth are not bright white. My dentist carefully selected the tooth colour when he fitted my dentures.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 18/01/2022 10:31

God that’s horrifying about the limbs and things coming off.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 18/01/2022 10:51

Laura Fraser is beautiful just as she is.

I don’t think veneers are wrong lavender - I just think it is a pity when people have perfectly lovely teeth that they then feel the need to change them.

The current look for two rows of gleaming white and too large teeth is not a look I like but each to their own.

Restorative dentistry? Another thing all together. I should know - my ex damaged mine when he decided to rearrange my face.

Anyway - I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make anyone unhappy Flowers

viques · 18/01/2022 16:56

@Imayhaveerred

Also while I’m being picky surely there is no way a trained nurse would be scraping dog shit off her shoe in the kitchen sink?
That’s why they have an outside tap, near Fred’s shed if I recall.
SantaClawsServiette · 18/01/2022 17:46

No, there are absolutely good reasons to have teeth reconstructed. But now it seems that even people with perfectly nice teeth get them, and they look more unnatural than they used to. I have wondered if that's the style or it's just bad dentists?

TitsInAbsentia · 18/01/2022 19:12

Ah yes....fairly standard episode with DrTsplaining as usual topped off with balloons floating away, who knew Fred and Cyril exhaled helium.

I am only sticking with this in the hope of a big old banger of an episode where sister MJ runs off with the ice cream man, or Fred Buckle....

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 18/01/2022 19:16

Dr T is probably the only one who could haven given Boz a plausible explanation for the parties without upsetting the nation. Or smirking.

And he’d have got that Prince back sweating like a horse in two ticks.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/01/2022 19:29

Dd can’t stand Sister MJ either. I like her! She can be wise and can be quite kind at times.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/01/2022 19:30

Sister MJ is just about my favourite character!
