I know I got confused and thought eastenders was onthen, I was checking on my new digi recorder, set it to record now. Along with umpteen other classic kids films.

sarahhal · 20/12/2007 20:08

Do you remember Curtain Up? Loved that as well as another book which was adapted called Swish of the Curtain.
These books so made me want to be able to sing and dance and actually, to be in Annie Can't sing, can't dance!!!!

Raahh · 20/12/2007 20:19

the one where posy and pauline are in the states is called the painted garden, i think, The Winter family go over to make a film when their youngest daughter wins a part in th efilm of the Secret garden. I remember getting it for a present and staying up all night reading it.

hannahsaunt · 20/12/2007 20:20

No probs re downloading - text me to remind me .

moondog · 20/12/2007 20:21

moondog · 20/12/2007 20:31

Oh I remember talk of Peaseblossom!

What is posy doing in California though?

JackieNoel · 20/12/2007 21:25

Spotted a reprint of the Swish of the Curtain in our local bookshop recently and snapped it up - re-read it, and it's as fab as it ever was.

PeachyHasAFiggyPudInTheOven · 21/12/2007 18:48

I have finally agreed to Dh purchasing a digi recorder purely so I can record this LOL

How sad am I?

Will now flick through RT to find all things my paents unlikely to watch (ie all but Corie and Enders- rthey'll do Dr Who for the boys usually) and get ready to program in ready

Thank goodness for MIL for once in her life (buying unit with a cvoucher she has given us)

cmotdibbler · 21/12/2007 19:35

Moondog - Posy is in California as during the war the Ballet had to leave Czechoslovakia, and they went there. She was in films as Posina. This is in a subsequent book set during the war, where three children go to the same school and have scholarships from Pauline, Petrova and Posy.
The Swish of the Curtain was my favourite book as a child. There was an article about it on Womans Hour earlier in the year.

In a bit of a shameless plug, those who still enjoy reading the girls books of their youth, there are many groups dedicated to these where you can discuss them- Folly being a general one

moondog · 22/12/2007 22:35

Thanks for that.

Judd · 22/12/2007 22:46

Moondaog - does this ring a bell at all (because the Painted Garden stuff here doesn't sound "right" to me (as I remember it!))?
I remember a family going to California but there was an older boy called Sebastian who was a child prodigy on the violin. Jane was the difficult middle child, with the dog called Chewing Gum, and there was a younger very pretty daughter. It was Jane who ended up acting in a film in the book I read, although I think they all went to California because of Sebastian.

Judd · 22/12/2007 22:48

Sorry, just re-read my previous post and realised that I sound very rude (Painted Garden "stuff"). Wasn't intentional!

Also remember Ballet Shoes for Anna, as well as the ones already mentioned. Oooh and Gemma, Gemma and Sisters.

Raahh · 22/12/2007 22:53

painted garden was Tim, piano playing genius disgusted that the house they end up at doesn't have a piano,, Rachel; the dancer, and Jane difficult youngest plain child - see link to synopsis of book further down thread. Winter family went to USA , at the invitation of relative and Jane land parts in the secret Garden, despite being least talented of the family.

Raahh · 22/12/2007 22:54

Gemma! the fact she was SOOO cool and and film star, but played the BANJO. made me laugh!

Judd · 22/12/2007 23:00

SO tempted now to go into the loft and find out who Sebastian the violinist is then!

Raahh · 22/12/2007 23:09

Sebastian was the child who played violin in the 'apple Bough', I think...

galaxymummy · 22/12/2007 23:24

I am looking forward to this and doctor who too
