@EsmaCannonball

All the crying and emoting and endless demands that people talk about how much they mean to each other in a rather boring and repetitive way became really, really, really tiresome by the end. It's such a different show from the sparkly, fun bit of escapism that it used to be just a handful of years ago. Can we have the fun back next year, please?
I agree that aspect of it went over the top this year! (Obviously had too much time to fill with AJ & Kai mot dancing.) You'd have thought that the Beeb/Strictly final no less would have enough leverage to pull in another act to sing, or the cast of a West End show, (or something!) in time for the final, instead of the endless emotion.

However, bit of an aside, but they do the same with Wimbledon coverage. They constantly ask the tennis pros "what do you like most about being here at Wimblwdon?", "what makes being at Wimbledon so great?", "how do you feel being in the Wimbledon quarter final"? It goes on and on to.a tedious and embarrassing degree!

It's like they have lost sight of the viewer at home who pays their licence fee, it's all about their own agenda.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/12/2021 10:49

i think Rose had been a foregone conclusion, so they were bigging up J J
however it is a huge deal that two men made it to the final

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/12/2021 10:49

rose wouldnt really hear whooping and cheering though

ilovebrie8 · 19/12/2021 10:50

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross yep that’s the impression I got for sure they were behind j&j ...I think if it had been any other contestant than Rose they’d have won...

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/12/2021 10:50

It must be hard to nail a smile on your face on cue when you might be secretly a little disappointed.

And worse if you are not in showbiz and used to adopting the required expression.

As has been mentioned earlier, the off-stage significant others watching from the sidelines must find it difficult at times to muster an expression of delighted appreciation and not be caught on camera looking crushed by dance partner love-fests.

billysboy · 19/12/2021 10:53

Would love one of the contestants to answer the question , what will it mean to you ? " not much really its only a plastic trophy , I am having a laugh and getting paid £100k whether I win or not "

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/12/2021 11:01

Of course she would be disappointed if she’d have preferred J&J to win.

I get it.

But how could you not smile at Rose and Joe’s reaction?

That face was about 15 seconds after the winner was announced.

No one expects a plastered on grin at all times but I wasn’t expecting a face like that after all the gushing comments and such a joyous reaction from R&Jv either 🤷‍♀️

Redcrayons · 19/12/2021 11:06

I’ve warmed to Tess over the years.

She can’t do spontaneous and off the cuff anywhere near as well as Claudia so she looks a bit wooden in comparison. And the ‘aw your little face’ stuff is annoying.

But she’s a safe pair of hands, it all runs smoothly and having a woman fronting one of the biggest shows on the BBC is a great achievement.

I can’t see her leaving anytime soon.

stiltonandcrackers · 19/12/2021 11:07

@ilovebrie8

I thought the vibe from the pro’s was more in favour of j&j the level of noise and applause ...who knows ...the result is the result ...not sure it’s what the judges wanted but just guessing ...both were great finalists Smile
But as Rose is deaf their response is usually with signing anyway so not sure it's very significant.
aSofaNearYou · 19/12/2021 11:08

I don't think the judges favoured John, if anything I think they favoured Rose. In terms of the cheers being louder for John, I think that's just because half the crowd waved rather than clapped for Rose.

stiltonandcrackers · 19/12/2021 11:12

I think of the judges Anton was certainly behind the win for Rose.

I cannot understand why the others would not be more neutral even if John was the better dancer just look at what Rose and Gio have achieved, dancing like that without hearing the music we hear is quite frankly amazing and to me deserves the win the most. And to Gio for his teaching!

I can't see the 'safe pair of hands' thing. She seems to me that she'd have a major panic if the autocue stopped or something live happened that she had to deal with. As long as she can just stand there (wondering what do do with her hands) read the autocue and speak to the dancers like children she's fine. There are better female presenters for sure. I doubt she'd leave she's onto a cushy number but remember Arlene-they just got rid with no warning, replaced her with Alesha Dixon. Confused

I’ve seen Tess on other stuff like when they did the dance a thon for children in need and she was so lovely and natural, maybe it’s just the autocue that turns her in to a wooden spoon

Or MAYBE the strictly producers are so strict she’s really nervous about messing up

lottiegarbanzo · 19/12/2021 11:34

I feel sorry for Tess; she's been overtaken by time and expectations.

She was hired to 'manage' Brucie and keep the show to time, by co-ordinating the producer's instructions with Brucie's ear-pieceless spontaneity, while making it all look smooth and seamless. Actually a really hard job to do, requiring a lot of spontaneity 'behind the scenes' of her perfectly poised face. Classic swan exterior, with legs paddling furiously.

Now, everyone wants her to be spontaneous and show her personality. The opposite of the job she's been hired to do and practised for 20 years.

Sparklingbrook · 19/12/2021 11:36

I never understood why it was Tess and Brucie then when he didn't do it anymore it was just Tess. Confused
No feelings either way about Claudia except why can't they get the judges comments followed by the scores while still standing with Tess.

i just think it needs a major overhaul, it's all a bit stale as a format.

Fenelladepompom · 19/12/2021 11:55

Thought the final was a damp squib. Because only 2 finalists and because Rose's dances were so samey, especially the last 2.

StationaryMagpie · 19/12/2021 12:14

@NashvilleQueen

I don't want Johannes to change. He is giving it his every moment of every dance. I don't think he knows how to ease up. I love watching him. I have seen a growing number of comments in SM about him being too much etc and it makes me sad because I think he's pretty authentic and dance is how he lets himself completely go.
i agree, watching Jojo and Oti dance absolutely make the show for me, every time, they're both incredible.
Onlinedilema · 19/12/2021 12:18

Rose and Gio are the only couple who have ever made me cry whilst watching a dance. They did it again last night with their remarkable couple's choice.
I have never fried before and I've been to more dance competitions and show than I could count.
I gave them all my votes but I voted before I'd watched J&J dance because I wanted R &G to win regardless of what happened last night.
It is a popularity contest like so so many things in life.
I didn't want another average white man to win yet again.
If Rose hadn't been in the final I would have voted for AJ. I loved her honesty last night, no pretending it's ok, it's taking part that counts bs, she told it like it is. I'm also convinced AJ was gutted because surely she has been paying Vicky to give her the most gorgeous costumes this series. Every one was stunning.

herecomesthsun · 19/12/2021 12:19

I think "letting yourself go" could be a good thing.

However, there is an issue with facial expression being important for the acting element of dance and needing to be appropriate, and grimacing/ dancing with your mouth open etc. is often mentioned as an issue for other dancers.

Also, whether they are male or female, the 2 dancers need to mirror each other to a degree. So it is an issue if one dancer has a very upright posture and the other dancer is leaning over with very flexed or extended limbs. It is also an issue if it looks as though the movements of the 2 dancers should be the same, and they are actually very different.

Runningupthecurtains · 19/12/2021 12:28

@Fenelladepompom

I suspect the final would have been far more 'balanced' with AJ - Rose had three romantic numbers -two slow and one fast and John had one slow, romantic dance, one fast and firey and a mostly fast show dance so the over all balance was tipped towards slow but if we'd had AJ's jive and Charleston and a presumably fast show dance the overall pace would have been completely different. I suspect the judges choices would have been different if they knew there were only going to be two in the final.
dollybird · 19/12/2021 12:46

I saw Bill and Oti's showdance from past year again yesterday (Oti shared it on IG). It was very good with very emotive music (Show Must Go On), but I had completely forgotten it. I remember Maisie's because it was fun and Christmassy. I loved Bill last year and voted for him most of the way through, but switched to Maisie for the last few shows and the final. Happy that Bill won though.

Frezia · 19/12/2021 12:48

@Snog

Why oh why didn't Rose snog Gio at the end

DH and I joked that at one point it seemed like Gio almost went for it but she ducked and gave him the forehead instead Grin

There's clearly a lot of performance and playing up romance in these couplings for the sake of the narrative the voting public wants to believe, whether or not there are any such feelings between them. I do think Giovanni was laying it on a bit too thickly lately both with camera presence and the show dance and it can't have been particularly good for her boyfriend or their relationship. When Rose plays romance in a production with a fellow actor, we all know she's playing a character, but in Strictly she is supposedly herself. Tbh Gio was convincingly lovestruck and he doesn't strike me as such a compelling actor so there might really be something on his end at least.

Oh well it was all a good fun anyway.

ThePoetsWife · 19/12/2021 13:06

In today’s Sunday Times, written by India Knight:

Of course she’s a wonderful dancer, so light and airy on her feet that she recalls the golden age of Hollywood musicals. Sometimes she seems to float in mid-air.

And of course, as her partner Giovanni Pernice said, she has had to work five times as hard as anyone else because her deafness means she couldn’t hear the music, relying instead on a combination of counting and absolute trust. All this with good humour and not a peep of complaint.

But the main thing about Rose Ayling-Ellis, 27, who lifted the Strictly Come Dancing trophy on Saturday night after 13 weeks and 16 gruelling dances, is how deeply she has moved everyone watching her. We weren’t moved out of pity at her deafness: Ayling-Ellis is not in any shape or form a pitiable person, but an enviable explosion of joy, vitality, talent and sheer spirit.

No, what was so unprecedentedly emotionally engaging – like Anton Du Beke, I watched many of her dances while spontaneously welling up – was the relationship she and Pernice developed and which informed all of their routines.

What we saw playing out week after week is, literally, the oldest story in the book – the basis of fairy tales, romantic novels, the best and most cherished films and rom-coms: a charming, guileless girl-next-door, fizzing with effervescence and joie de vivre, melts the heart of a more high-glamour, world-weary, cynical man and shifts something within him. The plot twist here is that the ingénue doesn’t get the man, or rather, that she doesn’t get him in the usual predictable way. Instead, she gets him – well, in his soul. No wonder we were all in bits.

As the weeks went by, the audience at home could see Pernice, 31, evolve. He is a man who can rock guyliner and does not shy from campness but who also presents very much as a square-jawed Sicilian macho. His dating history involves influencers and people from Love Island. It seems fair to say that he had not come across anyone like Rose before.

With each passing episode, we could see him thaw, and then melt, and then view the competition in a completely different light, where winning was less important than showcasing and supporting Rose to the utmost. Pernice – in previous series cool, slightly aloof, polite and friendly but essentially just doing his job – turned into a grinning, damp-eyed hyper-enthusiast, hugging Rose at every opportunity, gazing at her adoringly and planting smacking great kisses on her face out of sheer delight at her.

It is a terrible cliché, and one overused by the judges, to say that a professional is proud of an amateur, but Giovanni’s pride in Rose was off the scale, and you could see it beaming out of him.

Tonight, just before their second dance, he cried, and described Rose as “the best thing to ever happen in my life. I want to say thank you for everything. That’s it.”

What made the story even better is that she seemed completely unaware of any of this. She teased him, giggled at him, said, to his mortification, that she could smell his breath when they danced a sexy and intense Argentine tango, and generally gave no impression of realising that she was the agent for what appeared to be a fundamental change in Pernice’s whole being. It was intensely romantic, but with no romance, which made it romantic cubed. It was beautiful to watch.

ThePoetsWife. Did you read the "Relative Values" article about Jeanette & Alijaz in the Sunday Times Magazine as well? I liked finding out how they got together and they seem like such a great couple
