Ballet is very good for teaching your body what muscles you have. I did ballroom and Latin at university (where a lot of people start it having never danced before) and it would surprise you how many people didn't really understand how to point your toes, or where your instep is. People who'd done ballet were much better at rising up on their toes, using their knees and ankles etc.
I'd agree with that. I did ballet from 7-15. I was bloody hopeless and unfortunately despite my imagination, was not born into a body that wants to move, but yes, it teaches bodily awareness, turning out, posture, holding yourself, line and use of levels. It does transfer to other skills and again, while I'm superficially awful at yoga due to poor flexibility, I have a better awareness of what my body is doing (or not!) and how I hold it.
Ballet won't teach ballroom, and some techniques are contradictory from dance to dance, but ballet would be a short-cut into understanding what you need to do with your body each week. A bit like learning one language can make another easier.
