Absolutely loved it!

My list of big house jobs includes 'declutter' in every room so I was hoping to put off doing it be inspired. Loved Stacey Solomon though would have liked more from Ivan on the cleaning.

I agree. They seemed like a nice family. But my goodness those boys needed some serious training in picking up after themselves 🙄

Juniper68 · 28/09/2023 22:59

Episode 2 I noticed the middle child wasn't included?

SqueakyDinosaur · 29/09/2023 11:47

He (Connor, IIRC) was there some of the time but not all. But Rhys and Amber were both very vocal so it was easy to miss him.

They didn't 'do' anything special for him. Loads for amber and a little bit for Rhys.

Am I the only one who noticed someone had spelled out “queef” with the fridge magnets?!

Why was there no 'one month later'?

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 30/09/2023 10:58

We noticed that there was no "one month later" too. DH assumed it was because the place was a tip again.

TitsInAbsentia · 30/09/2023 12:56

I am irritated by this family, make your bloody beds! Makes things look a bit better instantly.

Struck my how posh the boy at uni soundsed compared to rest of family although clearly not short of money judging by her shoes and clothes etc. I think the poor woman was still grieving the end of her marriage so hope this has helped her..

I noticed this too. I wondered if he’d put on that accent to fit in if attending a ‘posher’ university? The difference between his accent and the rest of the family was quite marked.

I found the contrast strange and marked. But how do you put on an accent different from that you've used all your life? Wouldn't it slip? You can tell if someone isn't 'genuine' as they used words that give away their background or class.

Sorry, I'm just interested in language in case that comes across otherwise. I find it fascinating. I know Edward Heath (in his autobiography) said that his accent changed at university.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/09/2023 13:36

My boy has come back from uni very 'well spoken.' It's hardly surprising, they spend 3-4 years away, accents change.

Mine didn't?

I'm not sure what your point is? Of course not everyone will but it's not unheard of for your accent to change depending on where you're living. I e recently met up with a friend I haven't seen since school, we both agreed our voices had changed.

Mine didn't either. Not at all. Granted I already have a neutral, what people might describe as well-spoken, accent.

I wonder if it's consciously and deliberately done.

assietplat · 30/09/2023 14:05

Voices will have changed since youth. I sound like a more mature version of myself, more like my mother, but my accent hasn't changed. I just sound very grown up now compared with old recordings.

Though I listened to an old radio play from childhood (completely amateur honestly) about a boarding school (outs self now) and I sound far less precocious, and dare I say pretentious, now! Thankfully

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 30/09/2023 14:08

It's very normal for voices to change when you are surrounded with other people with different accents, especially over a prolonged period of time. Even within a family there are variations depending on where you spend time or who with, his didn't sound put on to me at all.

I find it pretentious tbh.
A slight change maybe? But totally changing your voice to sound posh is awful.

I can understand people picking up accents. Mixing with the same accent constantly is bound to rub off.

And if the accent is 'posh' it's bound to rub off just as a Northern accent is likely to of you moved up North.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/09/2023 14:23

I know a Scottish man who is married to a French woman, when she speaks she has a slight Scottish accent, is that pretentious too or ok as it's Scottish? Good grief 🙄

Moodwill · 30/09/2023 14:32

Language is interesting! I noticed his strong accent too, so different to the rest of them. I wondered if he'd been private schooled, or if he went to a uni where the population spoke like that and he picked up their accents while there from his peers.

Like Hyacinth Bucket I suppose. It's sad if it's deliberate as there's really no need. Such a marked difference must be unusual.

I knew of a girl from university who had had elocution lessons while at school (she volunteered this information funnily enough) as her mother hadn't wanted her to sound the same as her school friends. You could still work out where she was from, and background, I thought.

I do know of someone who deliberately tried to change her accent. So much so that her nickname is Margo. She didn't go to college or university but worked on the telephone in an office/customer service job.

RandomMess · 30/09/2023 17:05

I suspect they had money as a married couple/family and no longer have anywhere near as much.

Accents - my DC have really different accents, some are much better spoken than others, all young adults we have relocated once but they had quite different accents before we moved, one the local "rough" one, one well spoken, one in between, one very well spoken who went to a different school and her Dad is well spoken/mixes more with well spoken people.

Rummikub · 30/09/2023 17:19

I’m a scouser and I used to have a strong accent. Spending time at uni with a lot of southerners who couldn’t understand me had an impact. I don’t remember doing it deliberately though. By the time I started work my accent was very toned down unless I’m angry or drinking! I’d like to go home and top up my accent.

im fascinated the other way by people who moved away and still retain a strong accent.
