I thought I had started a post about this programme when the pilot was out but just seen on Instagram that the series will be starting on 13th September. I hope it's as good as the pilot was.

I'm going to be honest. I didn't like it and switched it off 3/4 of the way through. I live in the town in which it was filmed. Dp actually saw them filming it when he was working. Agree the need for more w/c female characters but I just though it all a bit crude and trying to shock. Yet another series where the w/c folk swear and shout but are all salt of the earth underneath. Pretty much like shameless did 10 years ago or brassica more recently. I wanted to like it don't get me wrong. Think the Royale family and Early doors did it better.

the80sweregreat · 18/09/2021 21:33

My dh saw the pilot today and wasn't keen ( I kept on about how fabulous it was and made him watch it )
I was laughing away and he just didn't get it ( we are both working class people lived in a council house as kids etc, but it just wasn't his humour ) I hope he will try the other episodes , as it does get better I think.

I've watched the first three episodes and I love her approach to life. What makes it so poignant is that it's semi autobiographical, Sophie Willan's mother was a heroin accident, she did grow up in care and was for a time, a sex worker.
Great cast too with Jayde Adams, Lorraine Ashbourne (who I didn't know is married to Andy Serkis) and Siobhan Finneran

longtompot · 21/09/2021 09:18

Watched episode two last night and loved it. Can't wait for the rest of the series. I'm watching it weekly so need to be careful reading this post. Should have put no spoilers in the title Wink

I've just binged watched this week in iPlayer and thought it was great.

I have to admit the writer Sophie was on Sunday Brunch this week and I was half paying attention and thought it was just another crap sitcom type show (I don't think they interviewed her very well and they didn't pick a good clip). But my sister messaged to say watch it and I thought it was really poignant in parts and made me really laugh in others. She's very talented. I think the pilot wasn't the best episode and I was a bit unsure in the first 15 minutes, but really enjoyed the series.

No spoilers, but I wonder if they will bring it back?

I watched the first couple and liked it, but was disappointed in the 'happy hooker, empowered making loads of money, men just want a cuddle' schtick?

Does this change towards the end as I don't think I'll continue to watch otherwise.

Yes it does. Shows more of the darker side as the series moves on

It is loosely based on her life from what I've read, and she did do this job for a while.

I hope there is more to come!

I loved this. Watched all six episodes tonight. It was so funny and sharp and very moving, and packed a huge punch with the social issues. I thought her grandma was terrific.

Sophie Milan deserves so much success, what a talented young woman.

I loved Alma’s green and pink wardrobe too.

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2021 09:05

I might start a spoilers thread !
Can't do links but will be on tele addicts.

AngryMuppet · 27/09/2021 12:26

Wait, is it a mini series/not coming back for Season 2? Nooooo Shock

Teeh · 02/10/2021 18:48

I just finished watching this. It is refreshing to have such a strong female cast. I thought it was a great story told in a lighthearted way

mum2jakie · 06/10/2024 10:53

The second series starts on BBC2 next week!

Monday at 10pm BBC2 - will also be on iplayer.

Well worth watching if anyone hasn't already seen the first series!

Features the fantastic Lorraine Ashbourne as another great matriarch. Siobhan Finnoran is also in it.

The lead actress - Sophie Willan - also has a small part in the fantastic Ludwig series.

BlanklyMyDear · 06/10/2024 11:42

I’m looking forward to the new series!

Crystalbits · 08/10/2024 00:54

Thought it was dreadful. Yet another portrayal of quirky rough but with a heart of gold northerners.

mum2jakie · 08/10/2024 18:27

I think it's semi-autobiographical, based on the main character's life!

LushLemonTart · 08/10/2024 22:21

Just been watching series 2. Absolutely love it. Dh does too. Binged series 1 but dh fancies trying Ludwig so on watching that.

It is i knew Sophie,s mother in a professional capacity, they they have potrayed her spot on .

cushionfiend · 11/10/2024 23:14

I've just discovered this - binged the first series and just started the second one. Absolutely loving it. Strong women who have been through some serious shit, funny and yet also moving. Honest and brilliant. Can't believe I never really heard about it when it first aired.

LloydColesCommotions · 11/10/2024 23:40

Finished the second series, wow. She's SO talented.

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2024 09:23

Nothing gets her down.

Agree, she's excellent.

Enjoyed Series 1, but series 2 was perfect.

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2024 13:05

I also like her friend Leanne ( who is an Adele tribute act in real life)
Love seeing Dave Spiky too
