Alix Polizzi - My Hotel Nightmare

Anyone watch this? It was really good - love Alix generally anyway and seeing her arguing with her mum and flapping slightly when she’s normally so unflappable was endearing. Made her very human. The relationship with her mum - who was so demanding and such high standards and barely giving an inch in each discussion really made me laugh. For someone who has a similar mum-daughter relationship with my own mum, I fully recognised a lot of Alix’s woes Grin

Is this on channel 5 ?

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Oh wow, not a great greeting then,I can imagine her doing that !
No, it was a bit scary because we hadn’t thought we’d see OP in residence. It’s a beautiful place. I wish we’d been braver, but she looked so headmistress like we mumbled and walked out.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2021 19:30

You wouldn't really want to eat there not feeling welcome,it would be awful!

For £150 -£170 you can get such beautiful rooms these days, I think £270 is outrageous.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/08/2021 19:31

There isn’t an obvious reception. We felt foolish. I did think afterwards it wasn’t very hospitable.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2021 19:54

Interesting as AP always bangs on about an obvious welcoming reception!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/08/2021 20:33

You have to go up a long staircase outside. We had only gone up one staircase and come to a level bit when OP appeared. We didn’t see an obvious reception or any signs.

The hotel is built into the hillside. It’s all white and goes up these stone steps. Very unclear as to where they lead.

We’d been recommended by the place we stay to try the afternoon tea.

When we watch Hotel Inspector and Alex says there’s no obvious reception we always think back to Tresanton.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2021 20:56

@spongedog lovely and worth the money?

@OnTheNatureOfDaylight 4 or 5,can't remember,my sky box just recorded it. Worth watching!

I read the review of The StarShock

SunShinesBrightly · 26/08/2021 21:10

Love watching how the other half live (and work) !

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/08/2021 21:46

I love Alix and would like to stay in the hotel but have they really got zip beds in the double rooms?

I appreciate they need flexibility but if I book a double I want a proper mattress

JemimaTab · 26/08/2021 22:15

I’ve just read that review of The Star as well - yikes! It sounds like they opened too soon (although it must be such a money pit they wanted it open asap). I’m pretty sure I won’t be paying £270 p.n. for a room in the underwhelming new block (with dinner for two at an extra £160!!).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2021 23:17

£340 for a suite, which was just a room with a sofa as far as I could see!

I just watched the last episode, omg I was anxious just watching it Shock

SandlakeRd · 26/08/2021 23:36

I was very underwhelmed by the rooms. Maybe the design features stood out more in real life but they were nice but not extra special in my opinion. The bathrooms looked fairly ordinary too but again maybe the marble made them more impressive when you are there.

RevolvingPivot · 27/08/2021 16:06

The rooms were too small for a bed. 2 side tables. A dresser and a sofa.

I wondered whether all of the dramatics were just for tv. However I don't think Alex would agree to do that and make herself look silly.

They have two hotels. I didn't really feel sorry for them. Is that not enough.

RavenT · 27/08/2021 17:07

Same experience at the Tresanton. We were looking to enquire about booking lunch, we wandered up the side steps and came onto a terrace but there was nobody about, no signage and no obvious desk or reception point. We left and had pasties on St mawes harbour. Grin

Ah interesting. Thank you, I’ve felt cringey for ages about the encounter.

We didn’t get as far as the terrace. We were sort of half way up the steps when OP called up to us.

It’s very strange when they bang on all the time about the importance of a visible reception.

josbd · 28/08/2021 00:46

OP reminds me of my mother. She used to terrify people too, bless her. I love Alex. Actually, I think I shall install her on my (v short) celebrity crush/shag list :D

What I thought was really weird was that painting of the winking woman Confused

Yes!!!! It was so cheap and gimmicky for the ambience of the rest of the hotel!!
pecanmix · 28/08/2021 17:00

I was shocked at how much of a frightened little girl Alex turned in to around her mother. She was terrifying!

Kipperandarthur · 28/08/2021 17:28

I was surprised at how in awe and frightened Alex seemed to be of her mother. I also thought it was terrible PR for their new venture.

The room decor seemed very dated and gosh that awful floral sofa stuck at the end of the bed. Far too much furniture in some bedrooms and very uninspiring bathrooms. I really was very surprised at how underwhelming some of the rooms were and the choice of using wallpaper.

I’ve subsequently read numerous travel journalists reviews and they are not complementary at all stating very dated decor. Having said this I obviously wish them well but it’s going to take a long time to pay the debt down.

As an aside I do wish Alex would stop calling everyone darling and doll !

RevolvingPivot · 28/08/2021 19:12

I think OP has had her time now. This hotel looks extremely dated. She should let Alex takeover or even her grandchildren.

It was ghastly wasn't it? I thought it was going to be some very expensive genuine oil painting. Why on earth OP thought that would add to the quality ambience of the place, goodness knows. I don't get why it's so expensive. I stay regularly in a beautiful B and B in the highlands that's less than half the price of the Star and the rooms are a lot nicer. The heavy florals looked very dated to me.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/08/2021 21:50

I agree, I stay in a couple of places regularly that are seriously nice and half the price of that Confused

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/08/2021 21:51

The review said it was John Lewis crossed with Travel Lodge which sims it up Grin
