Not too fussy on genre (though not too keen on comedy) but it has to have:

  • excellent script and storyline
  • believable characters that I can become emotionally invested in,
  • including if possible a heroic but slightly flawed male character that can become my new obsession Grin

Series I've loved:

  • Breaking Bad
  • The Handmaid's Tale
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Line of Duty
  • Fleabag
  • Firefly
  • True Detective
  • Criminal

Latest obsessions were The Vampire Diaries Blush and Hannibal. Loved them!

Series I couldn't finish:

  • Outlander: I so wanted to love this and I did enjoy the first two series but I stopped watching after a few episodes of series 4, it just seemed to get a bit dull.
  • This is Us - too schmaltzy and tbh I just couldn't get past them being able to just walk out of the hospital with a random baby. Vampires I can suspend reality for.. This not so much.
  • Homeland - watched the first episode but found it a bit dull - does it get better?
  • Bridgerton - not sure how, but lasted until episode 6.
  • Greys Anatomy - watched a few episodes but just didn't connect with it.

Have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney. Any help would be most appreciated!

We've binged Castle with Nathan Fillion in, it's a detective show, quite good and long running although a few years old now.
Also, Lucifer. Tom Ellis is brilliant in it.

I am the same OP, the first episode had to grip me. I couldn't get into Bridgeton either. The only exception here is Schitts Creek.

Snowpiercer was good, much better than the movie
I have just finished The Last Kingdom which I really enjoyed.

So thought I would update this as it's taken me another two months to get into something that I think I might become a new obsession. I've only watched one episode but I'm hopeful Grin told you I was fussy

I sadly couldn't get into Fringe, invested a whole series and half into Spirited, but just couldn't see it through, rewatched a bit of Vampire Diaries before taking the plunge and signing up for a free trial of Now TV. I watched two episodes of Dexter, half an episode of the Wire and then the whole of the first series of The Affair.. Started the second series, but just didn't care enough about the characters to find out what happened to them...

But! Watched the first episode of The Americans last night and I think this might be The One.. 🤞Grin

I was just going to say The Americans, so glad you’ve started that!
Also Mad Men.

LagganBubble · 24/10/2021 10:34

If you've got Now TV I would recommend Succession

If anyone wants a synopsis... Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys play Russian spies during the Cold War undercover in America as an American married couple. They had an arranged marriage and for 20 years knew nothing about each other's lives before they became their American personas. They have two tween/teenaged children who have no idea who their parents really are. In the first episode their mission is to capture a Russian deflector..

Really good! It is loosely based on a group of actual undercover Russians posing as Americans who were only arrested by the FBI in 2010.

This is an article about two children of two of them who only discovered their parents were Russian spies when the FBI paid a visit..

I've just discovered On the Verge it's a romcom about middle aged women written & directed by Julie Delpy and it's On Netflix.
It's described as " A Comedy About Four Fortysomething Women Trying To Live The Lives They Envisioned" aka Girls but the main cast members are in their 40's/early 50's....
