Not too fussy on genre (though not too keen on comedy) but it has to have:

  • excellent script and storyline
  • believable characters that I can become emotionally invested in,
  • including if possible a heroic but slightly flawed male character that can become my new obsession Grin

Series I've loved:

  • Breaking Bad
  • The Handmaid's Tale
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Line of Duty
  • Fleabag
  • Firefly
  • True Detective
  • Criminal

Latest obsessions were The Vampire Diaries Blush and Hannibal. Loved them!

Series I couldn't finish:

  • Outlander: I so wanted to love this and I did enjoy the first two series but I stopped watching after a few episodes of series 4, it just seemed to get a bit dull.
  • This is Us - too schmaltzy and tbh I just couldn't get past them being able to just walk out of the hospital with a random baby. Vampires I can suspend reality for.. This not so much.
  • Homeland - watched the first episode but found it a bit dull - does it get better?
  • Bridgerton - not sure how, but lasted until episode 6.
  • Greys Anatomy - watched a few episodes but just didn't connect with it.

Have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney. Any help would be most appreciated!

Spirited on Amazon prime. So different. It’s funny, sad, sweet, poignant, silly and brilliantly acted. I’ve not enjoyed anything as much for a long time. I’m totally in love with Henry. I’m really fussy about what I watch and find it very hard to get into most series but this was recommended and I am really sad I’ve finished it now.

Itsanothernamechange · 11/08/2021 11:25

I'm currently hooked on Quantico. It's on Disney plus. Each series is one story, lots of plot twists.

Get a 7 day free trial on Apple TV and binge on Ted Lasso

GeekCardigan · 14/08/2021 21:04

I’ve just finished The Wilds and Snowpiercer following recommendations on here - enjoyed both. Nothing beats The Fall if you haven’t seen it. I also missed Dexter originally - very old now but good if you like murders. Trying to get into The Leftovers but not succeeding! The Bridge perhaps?

I’m Going to give Cruel Summer a go

Reallyreallyborednow · 14/08/2021 21:13

Orphan Black
Upload on amazon prime- only one season so far but I’m desperate for another!
Good omens

Reallyreallyborednow · 14/08/2021 21:16

I’m enjoying the Roswell reboot too. Loved the original but the new one is a good take on it.

ShipshapeShore · 14/08/2021 21:19

I loved The Originals on Amazon (never watched Vampire Diaries though). I got really invested in the Mikaelsons!

HJL125 · 14/08/2021 21:20

Has anyone suggested Justified on Netflix? Crime drama that develops characters really well, and loys of series!

HJL125 · 14/08/2021 21:21

Nope, its amazon prime!

Silversun83 · 14/08/2021 21:26

Thanks everyone for the recommendations!

I watched the first episode of Fringe and despite the attraction of Joshua Jackson I didn't get particularly into it and found it all a bit far-fetched!

I then got sidetracked by Spirited and despite not particularly being a fan of surreal comedy, I have got a bit sucked in. Probably not a favourite but it has an understated sweetness to it and it's quite watchable. And I have a bit of a soft spot for Henry. His eyes remind me of Ian Somerholder's

Near the end so I will possibly give Fringe another episode or two..

@GeekCardigan - I tried The Fall but gave up before the end of the first episode Blush

I've wanted to try Dexter actually but I don't think it's on Netflix or Prime...

@shipshapeshore - I tried to get into the Originals as loads of people said it was better than TVD, but I struggled a bit but maybe I need to persevere!

You should definitely watch the Vampire Diaries! It is a bit teenagery to start with, but the characters are so well-written and believable. Yes, I did start to empathise with 165-year-old vampires

@HJL125 - Sounds promising, will check it out.

I think I'm just too fussy!

Dexter is on sky Atlantic/box sets if you have Sky

YawningAngel · 14/08/2021 21:37

Try The Magicians on prime. Mad as spoons.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 14/08/2021 21:40

Spiral. It's on iPlayer, and in French with subtitles. It's riveting, IMO.

TwilightSkies · 14/08/2021 21:42

Peaky Blinders??

GeekCardigan · 14/08/2021 22:58

@Silversun83 have you considered trying The Fall again? If you want a flawed male lead then Jamie is perfect!

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 15/08/2021 20:42

True Blood is amazing.

Vampires, sex, Eric Northman in a vest, funny bits.
I would really recommend it.

Also Stranger, The Fall, Mind Hunters, crime series.

QueenBee52 · 29/08/2021 22:47

Mind Hunters is fantastic

ssd · 29/08/2021 22:49

Spiral

CovidCorvid · 29/08/2021 22:50

Just watched Clickbait which was very good on Netflix. Also enjoyed The Chair.

QueenBee52 · 29/08/2021 23:00

@Impatientwino

Definitely stick with Homeland. We're currently on season 5 - it's awesome Bosch Orange is the new black - excellent writing and I loved this I'm really enjoying iZombie - again another one you need to stick with and it's a bit weird but once you get over the Zombie/brains thing its really fun! Hinterland - lovely mystery series Harrow - totally brilliant Schitts Creek - wonderful - gets great a few episodes in Superstore - easy, simple fun watching Parks and Recreation - absolutely bloody wonderful! It’s one I wish I could unwatch and then watch again! Ozark - dark but very good Orthodox - very interesting Emily in Paris - brilliant easy watch Good girls - good writing and the guy is mysteriously sexy

brilliant list thank you

DartmoorChef · 29/08/2021 23:02

The undoing. Nicole kidman and Hugh grant. Very good with a few good twists.

oh yes that was great ...

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 29/08/2021 23:07

I've liked most of the ones that Impatient Wino recommends but only ever watched one series of Homeland. The end of S1 made me so cross with its crap writing that I just couldn't watch anymore.
