@crabbingbucket

Excited for movie night!! Surely this is the moment to our Jake the snake

we can only hope 🎉

Fandangoes · 05/08/2021 19:18

What is movie night?

PumpkinKlNG · 05/08/2021 19:20

So it’s footage of casa amor? Is that right?

patkinney · 05/08/2021 19:29

@Flomoon I enjoyed your review of Love Island 2021 and maybe I have picked a bad year to join the party. - Not sure why, but I couldn't quote you.

I enjoyed reading it until the last line: "I'm not sure what you consider a 'real mumsnetter' though, maybe enlighten us?"

What a nightmare question that is! its right up there with "...does my bum look big in this?" but I will give it a go:

There was another discussion on here I followed last week, it was about the men's and women's gymnastics in the Olympics and how the women dress differently from the men. In addition, particularly in the floor competition they have to do overtly 'flirty' moves, even as teenagers. Most responses were what I expected: support for the German team who wore unitards and condemnation of the inequality and the over-sexualisation of women's gymnastics.

I suppose I expected something similar in the Love Island chat: the men wear shorts, I've not seen any Danial Craig speedos yet, whereas the women, well I have a face-mask with more material than what's covering their bums!

I applaud @Hopeisallineed for saying this earlier (but it surprised me): "....hot young buff men wandering round in their pants also helps. (#notshallow😂). But that’s just why I watch it."

It is good to read this honesty - sometimes these days people are too apprehensive to say what they really think for fear of offending one group or another.

Anyway, the fact is I've still got it on! Episode Ten now - partly I just love David Tennant's voice.

I believe so..

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 05/08/2021 19:36

I had to look! So no surprises for me tonight Grin

AngeloMysterioso · 05/08/2021 19:45

I wonder if they’ll show the Teddy/Clarisse flirtation…

Polmuggle · 05/08/2021 19:47

@patkinney what has David Tennent got to do with love island?

crabbingbucket · 05/08/2021 19:49

@patkinney you know it's not David tennent right?

todaysdilemma · 05/08/2021 19:50

@patkinney Do you mean Iain Sterling who presents LI? Many people have confused him for David Tennant due to the Scottish accent...

JacquelineCarlyle · 05/08/2021 19:50

I assume @patkinney means Iain Stirling as I thought he was David Tennant when I first heard him! Grin

Bellagio40 · 05/08/2021 19:51

@patkinney I’m sure David Tennant would rather stick pins in his eyes than have anything to do with Love Island

FeedMeSantiago · 05/08/2021 19:53

@AngeloMysterioso

I wondered if they would show any footage of the girls in the main villa, including Faye saying to Millie that she was worried that Teddy wasn't funny enough for her.

I kind of hope they leave Teddy and Faye alone - that postcard was harsh on Teddy who I think initially was a bit carried away by a change of scene and quickly reined himself in.

I hope they show Hugo telling Liam that he could basically enjoy Lillie as much as he liked while in CA and then leave her behind to go back to Millie.

Plus showing Jake encouraging Liam and the others to crack on with the new girls if course.

crabbingbucket · 05/08/2021 19:56

Oh I really hope they don't show Faye saying teddy isn't funny. Hearing her on first look getting upset saying she's not good enough for him because he likes jazz music just makes me feel even more that the whole "he's not funny" thing was her protecting herself

I saw that on First Look and actually thought it was another reason she finds him too serious/a bit boring (liking jazz v her Disney/RnB), but doesn't want to say that on national TV after he's been so lovely. Hence blaming herself. Which she probably does do, because she likely wishes she was crazy about him, and is upset that she isn't. In fairness to her, I do think she wants someone she can be silly and funny with like Chloe is with Toby. And lovely Teddy isn't that way.

Please let it be that montage of Jake snaking that they put together on Aftersun!

Kind of hope they show Lillie in action to disprove the 60/40 Liam claim. He was still an idiot though.

patkinney · 05/08/2021 20:08

Ooooh Hugo is in trouble - I need to find the right LI mumsnet thread from a month ago I guess to get peoples views on it, but basically he said he didn't like 'fake' girls. I initially assumed he meant people who have a fake personality, but they have taken it as an attack on women who have had 'work done' and it seems that is what he did mean! Now he is back-tracking, big-time.

But to go back to why I was surprised this show is so popular on here, this 'Hugo' issue illustrates what I'm talking about.

Is Love Island not just celebrating beauty, (and beauty as perceived in 2021) above all other traits - I bet the men haven't had procedures done, certainly not obvious ones - they may use the gym a lot. Is this not going against the sisterhood in that (some) women feel pressure to look a certain way to be attractive.

Finally, again, I'm new to the show, but are only straight people allowed on?

patkinney · 05/08/2021 20:10
@patkinney I’m sure David Tennant would rather stick pins in his eyes than have anything to do with Love Island
Ha - yes, I did wonder about that!

@crabbingbucket re: "you know it's not David tennent right?"

Well I do now!

TheTallOakTrees · 05/08/2021 20:11

So do people blame Jake more for egging Liam on or Liam for actually what he did behind Millie's back? Does Liam only do what is suggested, no free will of his own?

TheTallOakTrees · 05/08/2021 20:13

@patkinney

I agree that currently fake beauty for women at least is celebrated. The clone look, boobs, over filleting, fillers, fake hair, etc.

Men don't in the main have anything done

crabbingbucket · 05/08/2021 20:20

@todaysdilemma you might be right there.. I think I'm just desperate for them to work so I can live vicariously through them!

@patkinney they are all straight but in the past I think they had a few bi islanders... I think Sharon at the start of this series said she was bi. But I don't think there's ever been any gay action.

crabbingbucket · 05/08/2021 20:22

@TheTallOakTrees I was thinking today about how although the boys don't have work done, they are under a lot of pressure to go mad at the gym. The girls dont really have that... they're slim as opposed to fit really.

todaysdilemma · 05/08/2021 20:25

@crabbingbucket I actually have really grown to like them too! They have some verrrrrry sensual snogs - the only ones in that villa that don't make me want to be sick. And definitely a lot of chemistry. They certainly don't deserve any more drama from Movie Night!

Blamelesscars · 05/08/2021 20:27

@TheTallOakTrees

I don’t blame him but I think he’s a snake and Liberty deserves to see what her man is really like. I doubt she’ll be impressed he was actively encouraging her friends to get hurt.
todaysdilemma · 05/08/2021 20:29

@patkinney Oh I remember at the start a lot of the girls (and boys) commenting to Toby that he obviously didn't gym, and they said it in a negative way. And I found that hilarious because he's an actual sportsperson (semi professional footballer) but not a 'gym bod', just naturally fit. So yes, to pp's point there is pressure on the guys to look a certain way. I think a few of them might take steroids as they've got the pointy nipples you get from taking them - gynaecomastia or something.
